3340.0. "Quality Games in Basic..." by SHARE::DOYLE () Mon Jan 15 1990 17:25

	I not-so-recently purchased "Star Command" from SSI.
 It's graphics are primitive, but I enjoy the strategy involved with playing
 it.
	Anyway, after a frustrating round of fighting my way through space
  losing my men left and right and accidently selling the ship I worked so
  hard to biuld. I pulled out my disk editor to see if there was a way I could
  improve my chances of survival.
	Doing a general ascii search of the files, I ran across this gem.
  "Compiled in Hisoft Basic".
	Who says you can't make bucks programing in basic?

3340.1There used to be a lot of good Basic programs.CSC32::K_APPLEMANMon Jan 15 1990 20:1025
    There used to be quite a few good games written in Basic. One of the
    best originated on the old Radio Shack TRS-80 and was called Starlanes.
    You built up intergalactic trading companies by interconnecting planets
    and star systems. Stocks would split and companies would merge as time
    went on. No great graphics, but lots of strategy always interesting
    because you had to play against another person (not the computer).

    Over the years, I converted Starlanes to a variety of machines as my
    personal computing interests grew. First came the Commodore 64, then
    AppleSoft Basic, then ProBasic (anyone remember that. It ran on the
    IVIS machines which allowed some decent graphics) and now in
    AmigaBasic. Since the original program was copyrighted, I haven't
    tried to market it (though the actual program has been changed so
    dramatically, I don't see any copyright infringement problems).

    Personally, I feel the best computer programs were the early ones where
    the authors seemed to spend more time designing the strategy of the
    game rather than dazzling pictures. Compare the Apple's Threshold and
    Amiga's Vyper for example.

    If I get around to making up a documentation file someday, I will
    upload the AmigaBasic version of Starlanes. I think you'll find it to
    be a lot of fun.

I remember STARLANES from years ago. I'd love to see what you've done
with it.
