3306.0. "Fred Fish Catalogue improvements" by NZOV01::MCKENZIE (Stop Pollution: Leave a legacy) Mon Jan 08 1990 22:56

    This note is for suggestions for improvements to the fred fish
    disk catalogue now available. I felt it probably deserved
    a new topic of its own.

    If you have any suggestions for improvements or features you
    would like to see in the catalogue please enter them here.

    Cheers

    It has been suggested that release dates for all disks should be
    added to the catalogue.

    I have made provision for this improvement however, I need
    a little help from you lot.

    Can anyone provide me with a reasonably accurate list of release
    dates for all current FF disks?

    Thanks

    Phil

    It has been suggested that a cross reference showing which versions
    of certain programs are the latest versions available, would be handy.

    any ideas on how this could be accomplished from withing VAX DOCUMENT

    Cheers

Well, I used zoo to look at all the README/Contents files in all the
FF*.ZOO files on TAPE::, edited and sorted the output, and got the list
which is attached to the end of this note.

I'm not convinced that DOCUMENT can be convinced to do this. HOWEVER, what you
could do is edit the SDML file to produce a file with a series of records that
contain the program name and the disk number is appears on. Then, sort the file
using the program name as the primary key, and the numeric disk number as the
secondary (arranged in descending order). Then I guess you edit the file again
to make each record a <TABLE_ROW>, etc etc.

EG: if you end up with a file with records of the format:

FFnnn Program Name.......

Then use

$SORT/KEY=(NUMBER:1,POSITION:7,SIZE:60)/KEY=(NUMBER:2,POSITION:3,SIZE:3)
    input output

The final edit will change each line to the format:

<TABLE_ROW>(Program Name.......\FFnnn)

Horrendous heh? Still, it could be automated!

 Since this was done with DOCUMENT, can we have a DECwindows BOOKREADER
 version? Bookreader output requires an index and TOC. Since I waited
 for the new version I haven't yet seen what you have now. I might be able to
 help producing this if it doesn't take too long and enough people are
 interested. Save a tree when possible...

Actually BOOKREADER only requires a TOC, you dont have to have an index, still
since the catalogue already has an index, this is a bit of a nit!

What I really meant to say was... _yes please_. I'll even volunteer to build the
bookreader version if Phil doesn't have the tools.

    Thanks to Simon's date file - I have added a release date to each
    disk on the catalogue and re-compiled new versions. Many Thanks
    Simon!

    I think the best way to do a cross ref in VAX DOCUMENT would be
    to create an appendix containing tables that list all the lastest
    versions of certain programs that regularly re-appear in the catalogue
    and what disk the latest versions can be found on. This will allow
    easy modification by yours truly and a quick reference for the reader...

    As to the BOOKREADER version, very sorry but I dont have the resources
    I need to do this...so if Simon is still willing to convert the
    file, I will send him the *.sdml source file...

    Phil,

    Try the REPORT.TWOCOL design. I also have a documentised version that I
    have been keeping updated and this design reduced it from 400ish pages
    to under 200.

    What I do when I add the new disk information is to include the version
    in the <head2>(file Vx.xx) and <x>(file Vx.xx) lines and then simply
    looking in the index for the highest version number is sufficient.

    I also find the index to be the most useful, so I have it before the
    contents pages (as I find most times I want to know if xyz is on a fish
    disk and where to find it).

    Also, thanks to Simon for the date info.

    regards

PostScript users can save even more trees by using

	/parameter=number_up=2

on the print command line. This prints 2 pages per page. Nice output.

    I have added a neat little 'feature' to the postscript version

    I finally figured out how to add background text to a document -

    New versions of Both the *.ln03 and Postscript versions of the
    catalogue are now available.

    Improvements include:

    1/ Gold disk #3 was incorrect - it was a duplicate of Gold disk#2
       This has been corrected.
    2/ Release dates have been added to all disks

    3/ The postscript version now has the word "Amiga" as a background
       graphic on every page.

    4/ A cross reference for the latest version of objects that are
       featured repeatedly throughout disks 1-300 has been added. To
       find the latest version of a certain file - see the index. If
       a certain file is on more than on disk then the index will have
       an entry called "[file] Vxx.xx-Latest Version".

    5/ The modification history table has been updated to reflect all
        of the above changes

    Happy Fishing

    The fish catalogue has now been split over two volumes:

    Volume #2 - disks #301 - Onward

    All printer types (PS,LN03 and Line) available

    The latest 10 fish disks (301-310) have been added to volume #2

    I agree wholeheartedly with -1. These catalogs are GREAT. Many thanks
    to those who have put the effort in. They are especially useful to a
    new Amiga user like myself.

    Is there anywhere a catalog of the other stuff which is on Tape? ie all
    stuff excluding the Fish disk?

    I had my first look on TAPE and was amazed by what was on there, but I
    would like a little bit of info about what all the other stuff is!!

The best part about the catalog is when I run up against someone

I just slam the 400 page notebook down on their desk and say "How
about this? And all of it is FREE."

Works great.

To create the BOOKREADER version, I combined the two <title> tags into one,
added symbol names to all of the <chapter> and <head> tags, and deleted some
of the <line> tags when a paragraph would work OK. To get even better output
would require deleting more of the <line> tags and probably some <page> tags.

Then I processed the new SDML file using this line:

$ DOCUMENT/CONTENT/INDEX FF_CAT_V2.SDML  ONLINE.REFERENCE BOOKREADER

	yes, you are right, you must redefine the DECW$BOOK logical name.
	This is how I do it, however:
	Run FileView .
		In the Fileview window, on the Utilities menu,
	use Logical_Names to change the definition of decw$book.
	It's somewhat no-intuitive. Type
	"DECW$BOOK" into "name".
	then Write the name of the directory the
	fish books are in into the yellow box. Then copy paste that directory
	into the line under "define".
	Then push the define button. Then push the show button to verify
	that it worked. phew.
	Then push the dismiss button. Then run bookreader from the applicatons
	menu of Fileview, not the session manager.
	Remember that you must have library.decw$bookshelf file like:

	BOOK\ff_cat\THE COMPLETE FISH DISK CATALOGUE
	BOOK\ff_cat_v2\THE COMPLETE FISH DISK CATALOGUE VOLUME II

	someone else will give an easier way

3306.55For Session Mgr or DECtermSNOPLW::CARRGuru: a 4-letter word to Amiga ownersWed Jan 30 1991 16:2737
    For those that don't use FileView, and prefer starting the bookreader
    from either the Session Manager or simply from a DECterm window, the
    following command file will do the trick.

    All you need to do is modify the define command to point decw$book to the
    location of your bookreader file (mine's pointed at by a logical called
    amifish:). Then just go into Session manager, Customize Application
    Definitions, add a Fish menu item (call it what you want), and add an
    @dev:[dir]fishbook for the command. Then add it to the applications menu
    via the Customize Applications Menu pulldown.

    If you set up a symbol to invoke the cmd file
    (e.g. fish:==@amifish:fishbook), then simply typing 'fish' at dcl will
    spawn the bookreader.

    -Dom

    Command file follows:

$! Filename:	fishbook.com
$! Author:	Dom Carr (snoplw::carr)
$!
$! Invoke the bookreader for Fred Fish catalogue
$!
$! Change the following command to define decw$book appropriately.
$!
$ define/nolog decw$book amifish:
$
$ if  f$getdvi( "TT", "trm" )
$   then
$	spawn/nowait/input=nl:/nolog mcr decw$bookreader

Dave
3306.57logical search list can be usedWHAMMY::SPODARYKdigging for fireWed Jan 30 1991 17:3814
Yet another method is to define DECW$BOOK as a search list.
This will allow you to pick up the "normal" books, as well as any
that are specific to your needs.

(I keep my "fish" books, and a "fish" library.decw$bookshelf in amiga$txt:)

$ sh log decw$book
   "DECW$BOOK" = "$1$DUA28:[DECW$BOOK]" (DECW$LOGICAL_NAMES)

$ define decw$book amiga$txt,$1$dua28:[decw$book]

Note: this only changes your process specific decw$book logical, which
      won't be known to the session manager or fileview
      (unless you follow one of the previous examples)

3306.63Duplex Mode Problem (/DEV=DUPLEX)NITMOI::WITHERSAnother Hallmark Moment. -Al BundyWed Jul 17 1991 13:1820
    Dave,

    Just a little nit, I'm an LPS20 (double-sided printer) user and the
    document isn't prepared for duplex printing. If your using a later
    document (and the fact that there is a DECW$BOOK implies you are),
    just add the following switch to the compile line and blank pages
    will be inserted so the PS file will print correctly double-sided:

    	DOCUMENT/CONTENTS/INDEX/DEVICE=DUPLEX ....
    	                        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    If not, there is a tool available (from the TOOLCHEST I believe),
    called DOCTOR that can add the blank pages. A version doctored
    like this is available in:

    	TAPE::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]FF_CAT_V2_DUPLEX.PS

    Thanks for the great work on the catalog!

    *BLANK* pages????  Oh please....

    Is it really necessary to waste all that paper, especially for non-work
    purposes? Unless you are legally blind, documents such as this should
    be printed with NUMBER_UP=2, at least (=4 would be better).
3306.65TERSE::ROBINSONWed Jul 17 1991 20:137
 I actually recommend people use the Bookreader version or scan through
 ASCII text listings, but we are talking about *3* blank sides - not a whole
 lot in the overall scheme of things. Besides, I encourage anybody with
 suggestions for "easy" improvements to the docs.

    re: .64

    Yes, blank pages! When you read a book, you expect chapters to begin
    on the right hand pages, not willy-nilly. This is a small thing done
    to make books and manuals look better. Besides, it seems to me that
    even with a few blank sides, the duplex version of the catalog still
    uses only half as many sheets of paper as the single-sided version.

    Another benefit I would expect from the duplex format is to be able to
    hack the Postscript file of the next release (for example, at disk 550)
    to print out the table of contents, omit the first couple sections and
    all disks up to the low 500s, then print the rest of the disk
    descriptions and the updated index. This gives me a document which is
    indistinguishable from the whole new one without printing all of the
    new one. Another paper savings, I'd say.

3306.67Re: two sided - being smart with postscrip and being dumbCVG::PETTENGILLmulpFri Aug 02 1991 22:3516
The problem is that DOCUMENTs postscript output formater is doing the
absolute wrong way.

One of the things that postscript allows is actually being able to interact
with the printer so you can find out what it is doing. If someone would
explain the details to the right person, it would be possible to eliminate
the necessity for special formating and at the same time ensure that left
pages are left and right pages are right, PLUS for those people who want
things printed without any blank pages, they can do it, and when printing
it single sided, it will also print without (or with) blank pages.

I think that I can explain the postscript to do this and I don't have a prayer
of doing the kind of postscript that is generated by DOCUMENT.

(In case you haven't noticed, this misfeature of DOCUMENT is high on my list
of peeves.)

    Would it be possible to post an "addendum" V2 file in addition to the
    full V2 book? This would allow those of us who already have the V2
    book to simply add the pages on instead of printing the entire volume.
    I don't know if this is pratical or not but might be worth considering.

    Thanks

    Since the announcements seem to make it groups of twenty, it will soon
    be moot assuming we are holding to the original convention f 300 disks
    per volum. Currently we go 301-580....I'd it at volume 3 by march.

Here is what I'll do. I'll start a new volume @601. If someone can come
up with a *very* easy way to print sections or tell DOCUMENT to only
process a section or a file, I'll try to provide full volumes and updates pages
at each new release fo disks (or two sometimes :^)). I'm concerned about
overloading EOT with partial files though.

Since I always use the Bookreader version and only check the
PostScript with the CDA viewer, I have little incentive and, of
course, little time to investigate or jump through hoops to create a
subset. I *do* support the idea though. I think it will happen before
March. :^)

    If your bookreader format file can be read into DECwrite you can then
    output specific pages.
