| Platinum Scribble!
This is a confirmed probm. Platinum Scribble guru's when trying to
open an old file or when trying to change the default directory. It
will occur even if the original disks are booted from the floppies.
Disconnecting the A590 solves the problem The original Scribble! works
just fine. Will give MSS a call and see if they know of this and have
a patch.
Also, on the NewTek Demo, mine works fine with the A590 connected.
Have also gotten Falcon to start, but it is flakey. Still
investigating that one.

| Got a fix for the Platinum Scribble bug and for VirusX. This comes
from the Amiga_SYS note which contains the amiga.sys notes from usenet.
The original author is Andy Finkel of Commodore. Apparently, the
problem is that certain programs make an illegal (according to Andy)
reference to location 0. The AutoBoot of the A590 changes location 0
to GDOS (whatever that is or does). Programs that use location 0 then
guru for whatever reason.
The fix is simple enough but leaves some questions in my mind. First
the fix, then the questions.
1. Boot the A590 Install Floppy
2. Click on the HDtoolBox
3. Click on the Partition Drive gadget
4. Click on the Advanced Options gadget
5. Click on Add/Update File Systems
6. Click on Update FileSystem
7. Give it a new version number but otherwise leave it alone.
(apparently it doesn't matter what version you give it.)
8. Click on OK then click on OK on the Partition page
9. Get back to the main menu, then click on Save Changes to Drive
10. Repeat the above process for each partition on the drive.
11. Turn system off and reboot from the hard drive.
I have done the above procedure and it cured my problems with both
programs. My question is: What exactly does simply giving the
filesystem a new version number do? It doesn't actually update the
filesystem, nor are there other versions of the FileSystem in the l:
library that it loads. It sure sounds like a bug in FastFileSystem to
me.
Anyway, I am glad it is fixed. Let's leave this note active anyway
just in case some programs are found that have problems and can't be
fixed with the procedure.
Also, there is a note on Amiga_Sys, 2026.8, concerning disk performance
of the stock XT drive and a SCSI CSC Wren III drive. Makes interesting
reading. One item of interest is that adding more buffers on the stock
XT drive above about 64 doesn't seem to help i/o throughput much. This
info could help you optimize your buffers.
