3034.0. "optical mouse" by SALEM::LEIMBERGER () Mon Oct 23 1989 06:38

Having purchased a Boing mouse over the weekend,I started looking
for uses for the middle button. The only thing I could dig up was
an Amazing Computing reference to a program on plink. Not having
a credit card I don't subscribe to plink. The program is
"middle button" ref#16976.Has anyone with the optical mouse downloaded
this program ?If so could you upload it to the net? For those that
have not seen the note in Amazing all middle button does is to
allow you to use the center button on the Mouse as your extended
select. As for my experiances with the mouse so far,all I can say
is it was money well spent. This is a strong statement when you consider
that my old mouse worked fine before replacement,so I found it hard
to justify buying a new mouse. The major gains so far are
    	1) If I center the pointer, and then center the mouse on the
pad I can hit the corners, and all points on the screen without
	    overunning the mousepad.
2)The feel of the buttons is far better than the old mouse.
3)now I don't worry about the mouse ball(cat hair etc:)
    	4)smoother gliding on pad.
5)middle button available, but not useable yet.
The reflective pad that came with the mouse is just a little smaller
than the rubber pad I was using,so the gain it in mouse sensativity
not the pad size.Anyone out there know of any other software (aside
from X windows) that uses the middle button ?

I seem to remember hearing the story that Intuition was written to support
a three button mouse even though only a two button mouse ships with the
machine. The intuition header files contain flags and values for middle
button events, and so you can easily write programs that use the middle
button.

Thanks for the review. Since one of my mouse buttons is getting sticky,
I've been thinking about a boing mouse.

Matt Dillon's DME text editor purports to be middle-button aware.
I've no way of knowing. I don't think there is any command mapped to
it by default, but since DME is very configurable, you could map it to
    whatever you wished.

    Good luck,

Does the boing mouse require a special device driver?

re.5 No! the mouse simply plugs in and thats it.It comes with its
own reflective mousepad.I have been using it with Pro Page lately,
an I am still amazed at how much it changes the feel of your
application. Not that it modifies anything within the system, but
it just gives you a quality feeling that seems to carry over to
the rest of the Amiga. But then of course your mouse is one of your
    major interface components.

Must the reflective pad be used, and how large is it?

If it's the same as the optical mouse I used on a PC, then yes.
The pad is an optically encodeded surface which provides both distance and
direction information to the mouse itself.

It's smaller than a "standard" mouse pad (whatever *that* means :-). I'd say
it's as wide as a mouse pad is tall.

The pad that comes with the optical mouse seems to have a much finer
grid than the ones I have seen.I set mine ontop of the old pad I
used to use,and it is about 1/8 inch smaller overall.I find the
reflective pad much easier to clean, but then with no mouse ball
this is not as big a problem.I spritz it with windex, and wipe with
a soft paper towel. Also it is not harmed by liquid, and since I put
a fitted cover over my keyboard i worry less about the coffee I
have in the area every so often.

I just bought my Boing mouse from computer discount in the Denver
area. I paid $109.00 plus tax since I live here. The mouse is
great and after going through 2 Ami meeces I don't think this one
will wear out very soon. I would warn you before I got the boing
mouse I tried 2 My-T-Mouse's and both failed within several weeks
of buying them. Again I got them at computer discount and was able
to exchange them after they broke. I would suggest the boing mouse
just because it has no moving parts and it slides so nicely.
