2997.0. "Paint Programs ?" by DIZZY::CORKUM (Hey Sports Fans, I love ya') Mon Oct 09 1989 12:26

    	I'd like some information on what people believe to be the
     best ( price versus what you get ) drawing package for the amiga
     that produce IFF output.

    I've heard that Digi_paint is good. I've also heard that
    Deluxe Paint III is really good. Are their any opinions out
    there ?  Prices ?

    Why I need a drawing program ? ( mostly to generate graphs, bar charts,
    etc. for the wife for MBA projects, but to occasionally generate free
    hand art work for intros for possible game hacking....)

    thanks,
    matto

    Most of the drawing programs are not 'Object Oriented' and would
    not be well suited for doing graphs and charts. It could be done,
    but... Maybe someone can recommend a 'structured' drawing program
    for the Amiga.

    For general free-hand drawing, I would recommend "Deluxe PhotoLab".
    This consists of 3 programs (Paint, Color, Posters) for ~$99.

    The Paint program is very good. It doesn't have as many functions as
    say... Deluxe Paint III, or Digi-Paint III, but it can work on *all*
    Amiga graphics formats, which the others will not. It's easy to use,
    and has all the functionality you'd probably ever need, including some
    useful things that the others do not.

    Colors is a full-featured Image Processing program, that allows
    you to convert from any format to any other, and allows you to
    do many useful things regarding color analysis, etc. I haven't
    used this very much, but it is quite powerful.

    The Posters program is super. It allows you to take any IFF image
    and enlarge/shrink it to almost any size. You can actually print out
    posters up to (something like) 10'x10' using any printer (that has a
    WB driver, or course). The quality is excellent.

    Just my humble opinion, check out notes on the other products.

    I'm sure some others will disagree, but I don't think paint programs
    are really appropriate for generating graphs/bar charts. I've tried to
    do this on several occasions and it is very tedious getting results
    that are accurate (scaling, etc). Maybe it would be easier in a tool
    which keeps track of graphic objects. There is a shareware drawing
    program which does this in NORSE::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]PLANS.ZOO. What we need
    is something like Harvard Graphics but I haven't seen it yet. If all
    else fails, you might look at some of the Amiga spread sheets. Many of
    these are capable of creating decent graphs and charts (but they
    obviously can't do freehand painting).

    regards,

    If you use scuplt 3-d, you can make video cartoons of the pie charts
    and bar graphs growing and coming and going, for dramatic impact.
    A large-screen tv could be used to display them in a meeting.
    forms-in-flight could work too.
    It is possible to use Amiga BASIC programs to calculate mathematical
    functions, and write out the coordinates to a script file for
    scuplt 3d, which can then draw them from any angle, but animation costs
    extra.

2997.4Draw vs PaintDICKNS::MACDONALDWA1OMM 7.093/145.05/223.58 AX.25Mon Oct 09 1989 15:344
I believe there is a distinct difference between "drawing" applications
and "painting" applications. Professional Draw is a good example of a
drawing application, while Deluxe Paint III is a good example of a
painting application.
2997.5$$ & MacPaint-like ?DIZZY::CORKUMHey Sports Fans, I love ya'Mon Oct 09 1989 15:4815

    Thanks all so far for your initial responses .1, .2, .3 .4 on paint/draw
    packages for the amiga. I guess I should rephase my question
    based upon the initial responses.

    I really would like to have some information on draw/paint programs:

    1.) what's the price ( mail order ) ?

    2.) Is there anything like "MacPaint for an amiga" available ?

      ( I'm looking for something like MacPaint I guess.... )

    thanks,
    matto

    Deluxe Paint III is most like MacPaint, with the added features of
    animation, color cylcing and perspective tools. Both are bitmap
    oriented as opposed to structured.

2997.8Aegis Impact for Charts and Graphs?DRUMS::FEHSKENSWed Oct 11 1989 19:5010
    Aegis Impact is designed to support presentation graphics (bar charts,
    line graphs, etc.). It does provide for the generation of such
    graphics from data files. I have a copy and have used it only a
    little, as it doesn't do what I really want, namely nice text
    presentations. I'm also not much of a fan of Aegis products, having
    been badly burned in the past. However, people looking for some
    kind of presentation graphics support might want to look into it.

    Getting back to the topic at hand, I am interested in opinions of HAM
    paint programs. I looks as if the primary choices are DigiPaint III or
    Photon Paint II. Any recommendation...and why?
