2991.0. "Invisible directories" by MQOFS::DESROSIERS (Lets procrastinate....tomorrow) Fri Oct 06 1989 14:19

Last week my four year old trashed my hard drive, in a way only
known to them. I managed to recover every file with disk-doctor
from the 1.3.2 realease, however, now all single letter directories
(S, T, C, L) are now "invisible". Diskmaster can't see them, a
'dir' command from a CLI can't see them, yet I can change directory
to those invisible directories and list all the files contained
in each. The files can be transfered to another directory without
any problem (from a CLI only). If I try to makedir any of those,
I get a 'directory already exists' message. I tried playing with
protect especially with the H (hidden) bit, but with no success, in
fact I tried to deliberately hide a file, but even after rebooting,
it was still there with all it's flags waving. I guess my only
option at this time is to back everything up and reformat the drive.

Can someone offer an alternative, or an explanation of this phenomena?

Have you tried renaming the directories and then back again?

Along the same lines as -.1, in case that doesn't work you may
want to try (this is nothing but a guess mind you):

Make a new dir - TempC as an example; copy all the files from the
invisible C directory to TempC; delete all the files in C; delete
C itself; 'make' the C directory again; copy all the files from
       TempC to C; etc.; etc.

       Good luck!

I have seen the same phenomenon. What I did was to backup
everything using Quarterback. Then I had to backup those
'invisible' directories explicitly, reformat and resurrect.
Of course, I forgot my s/ directory, but all that meant was
    rewriting my startup-sequence. Dumb.

    No explanations, though.

Free advice, and worth every penny:

Avoid alternatives. I always believe the message that DiskDoctor gives
as it exits to the effect copy the data off the drive and then reformat
it!

An "almost good" file system repaired by DiskDoctor might work well
enough initially to allow you to get all your files, but might become
more and more corrupt over time.

Look on this as an opportunity to defragment your disk by recreating
it. :-)

Speaking of "invisible" and "directories," what is a "hidden" file that
is mentioned in the 1.3 docs but not really explained.
2991.6The hidden bit is sort of hidden right nowTLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersFri Oct 06 1989 20:2010

It seems to be a feature that didn't really make it into 1.3. There
is a new protection bit on files (just like rwe a and p) that is
supposed to hide the file. So you don't need to see it in directory
listings. So that all those people who say that ".info files
make my directory listing unreadable" will shut up.
