2945.0. "Mail-order printers?" by VMSDEV::BUFORD (It's a boy!) Thu Sep 21 1989 13:50

How reliable are mail order houses in general? Has anyone had any
    experience with Tenex specifically?

I have been looking around for a printer, and finally decide on the
Panasonic 1124. I found a wide range of prices:

    	System Eyes $460
Memory Location $425 plus MA sales tax
    	Electronic Boutique $400
Lechmere $360 if in stock and on sale, which it isn't now
    	Tenex $315 (plus shipping???)

Going on just price alone, Tenex looks the best. But I'm kinda leary of
sending hundreds of dollars off to some big mailbox in the sky, then
sitting on my hands for weeks on end waiting for electronic equipment
to pass unscathed through the mail...

A few months back, Omnitek had the 1124 for $359. I believe it was on sale
at the time, but later I asked them and they said they would still give it
to me for $359. They are located in Tewksbury, MA and Salem, no-sales-tax-NH.
I've had a lot of success at both locations.

OMNITEK in salem went belly-up last week,so you would have to go
to MA.I have had good luck with computer discount.I always order
    C.O.D. .This means more money,but it's safer.I also think it's better.
If you order yours, and pay by charge card they have you.If they
want my money they have to ship. Now who do you think will get shipped
    first.

I think Lechmere has a matching price policy. If you get a
written estimate from somewhere (like Omnitek, not mail order)
Lechmere may give you that price plus their 30 day
     return/refund policy.

     <detour>
The thirty day thing can be very nice. If you don't like what you
bought because say someone came out with a better/cheaper product
2 days after you bought yours, you can return for refund. Lechmere
then sells the returns at a good discount with warrantee. I got
a very slightly used TV (a return) for 30% off a few days after
the Super Bowl game a few years back.

thanks for the info about Omnitek in Salem. this is another reason to
not go mail order. I hate to see stores like Omnitek close while
cut-throat operations like the Software Shop thrive. Even though you
save a few bucks, in the long run we all loose because it's the real
dealers we must rely on for support/service. Oh well...

2945.5It may not be mail order competitionSTAR::ROBINSONThu Sep 21 1989 17:4041

     Steve,

(Warning! This turned into a 30 line complaint)
Although I agree with you about supporting local dealers and
worry about mail order places putting the locals out of business,
don't assume Omnitek died because of cuthroat price cutting.
I went to the Tewksbury Omnitek and was embarrassed for the
employees there. That's right I was embarrassed FOR them.
They were too ignorant to even know they were ignorant.
If the Salem branch used any of the same employees or
if the knowledge base was spread too thin between the stores
at least one of them would have to go.

I went to the Omnitek to get the WB 1.3 update. They had two
people hanging around in a room with two Amigas demoing the
DOC demo. I asked if I could buy a disk and make a copy of
the demo. "Gee I don't know. I don't think anyone has asked
for that before. I guess I could ask so-and-so" So-and-so
(the boss I think) was rushing off somewhere (Salem?)
and said that I could buy a disk and explained to one of
the "help" how to sell me one disk.

I then asked which machine I should use to copy from assuming they may
have a preference or a special setup/copy program etc. More stares. "I
don't know how to make a copy on these Amigas" So I did a icon drag
copy while they both watched in amazement. I know this wasn't Saturday
morning when they might have some technical expertise around, but it
was late afternoon on a weekday and the boss was leaving these
know-nothings in charge of the store. I should have known when I
walked into the store. I asked if there was any good new software
as a general "how's things" question. One of the "help" said, while
looking at the wall of software, "I don't know. That's kind of like
asking what movies are good at a video store."

The Memory Location and System Eyes seem to be thriving.
There is a nice Jaguar parked behind TML with the License
     plate "AMIGA"...

check note 2941.This is one reason I go to my dealers(System eyes).I
hate it when I have to send something into the black hole.(this
is what I feel returning something is like)In My case it was the
workbench disk for Pro Draw.A year later, and several calls still
no disk.Lucky it was a read error, and I salvaged all but the printers
in DEV:printers. Now I consider Gold Disk to be a very good company
so you can only guess what it could be like with a mail order house.
    I ordered Digi view,camera,ans stand for 400.00 no problems,and
overnight delivery.I still hesitate to go mail order for large possibly
breakable items. If you buy from a dealer that will relplace somethig
that is bad outright you can't go far wrong. As for service I paid
more for my software than if I bought it at Omnitek in salem, but
ob more than one occassion I was glad.Just before Omnitek died I
stopped in because a person here at work(SALEM) wants a 2000.The
    salesman(dead body)coulden't be bothered.Unless you can save $$$$$$$
mail order go to a dealer.System Eyes is putting that printer on
sale next week, but it may not beat the prices you have seen.Find
a mix of price, service, and convience then buy there.

    re .5

I believe the Jaguar with the "AMIGA" license plate is owned by the
woman who is president of Tech Plus. They are the New England
    manufacturer's representative for Commodore.
