2870.0. "Populous, and a fix" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Sat Aug 26 1989 10:20

Populous is probably the most addicting game to come along in ages.
This one will keep you at your keyboard until 3:00 AM.

Unfortunately, the game as it is currently shipping will not run on
    Amigas using a 68010/68020/68030 uProcessor.

Fortunately, there is a fix. I'v uploaded FIXPOP.ARC to
NORSE""::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]. Copy all the populous files to a blank floppy
or your hard drive and patch the POPULOUS.PRG file as detailed in the
    instructions.

This fix worked fine on a CSA Midget Racer, but only after I disabled
the instruction cache. Your mileage may vary.

2870.1hummm? How do you copy it?DNEAST::SEELEY_BOBMon Aug 28 1989 11:596
    Thanks Ed,

If only there were a copy/parameter program to copy Populous. I
haven't located anything yet that will copy the foolish thing and have
been stuck running off my original only. Isn't copy-protection a
    wonderful invention? :')

Yeah, I forgot to mention... FIXPOP retains the original copy
protection, so you'll need to insert the original program disk even if
you're running from a hard drive.

    Still, it's better than nothing...

Has anybody been successful at playing Populous via modems? We've
played between two systems locally ('datalink' mode) without any
problems, but the modem connection seems hopelessly fragile. We
couldn't keep the game running more than about 5 minutes at a time,
tried various speeds, etc., even another modem without success.

Paul Wisner and I have had good success with populous by modem.
The only problems we had was when we tried to play with
a SCHOLAR connected to a SCHOLAR PLUS. They wouldn't connect.
I suspect there's a SCHOLAR PLUS option to make them work
better together, but since Paul didn't have a manual, he switched
to a SHOLAR and, both using scholars, everything was fine at 2400
baud.

We tried both "serial checking" and lack thereof, no difference.
No speed difference at 2400 (noticeable anyway) either.

I suspect .3 has bad phone connections or incompatable modems.
The populous folks only wrote to support HAYES compatable modems,
and don't test with anything else. (I called and asked when
Paul and I had the modem trouble). I generally get crystal
clear lines, so don't have to worry about phone noise.

    Hi Guys,

I'm not an Amiga user but have played with thison a PC and am just
getting the hang at the lower levels (only evil flooding allowed).

I agree with .0 as far as staying up till 3:00 am - it's the most
    addictive game I've ever played.

Has anyone got list of Worlds and levels - I've only played it a couple
of times in CONQUEST mode and have got:

    SCOQUEMET	5 Desert
    BURWILCON	9 Desert

please mail me OURKID::WOODS if you are willing to fill in a few for me.

?Maybe this note could hold this info as well?

Bye for Now - Steve Woods
