2862.0. "Logical name wishes" by LOWLIF::DAVIS (That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!) Thu Aug 24 1989 15:04

Maybe this is a common gripe, but I don't think I've ever heard it:

I WANT "PROCESS LOGICAL NAME TALBES" IN AMIGADOS! (really, I do)
Say you've got some cool FOO BAR game you want to run that takes it's own
funky fonts that you'd never use in a million years for anything else, but
FOO BAR just *has* to have FONTS: point to it's own fonts. I want to do

   >Assign FONTS: FOOBAR:fonts TASK <- or some such nonsense

so that the FONTS: assignment is only changes for that task alone and the
rest of my tasks will use the "system" logical name. (Original idea, eh? ;-)

Also, while we're at it, give me a "user mode" assigment like:

   >Assign FONTS: FOOBAR:fonts TASK ONCE <- you get the idea

so that way I don't even have to "Assign FONTS: SYS:FONTS TASK" after I play
the game.

Ok, now who will vote for me for president?

Dreaming on,

    re .0

I'm sure you're echoing the frustrations of many of us here. I know
I've felt that way since getting my system. The only way I know
of to accomplish this is to run your cool FOO BAR game under Xicon
(or is it IconX) and have the come files to the appropriate
assigns and re-assigns. I've only done that once myself so I
could re-direct the fonts for DPrint II. Actually it would
have been more productive to re-direct DPrint II to the trash!

    Try this:

Look for a program called PathAss (or something like that) This
allows you to assign any logical to a series of directories. You
    could do something like:

    PATHASS Fonts: sys:fonts gamedisk:fonts

It will then step through the disks looking for the file it needs.
2862.3So what? ;-)FRAMBO::BALZERChristian Balzer DTN:785-1029Fri Aug 25 1989 06:4319

All very nice, blah, etc, Richard for president (of what?) ;-) ...

And now? I bet you all feel better, but unfortunately climbing on
the soap box and declaring your wishes to the baffled audience will
have zilch (none, rien, nada, keinen) effect on the direction and future
    development of AmigaOS.

What you should do is to polish your proposal a little and send
it of to CBM HQ, c/o Andy Finkel. Might make a difference...

BTW, all of these moronic programs *could* get their fonts from
somewhere else, if they just _wanted_ to.

Yeah, and I second the DPrint II re-direction. ;-)

    Regards,

2862.4How I did it!VARESE::ZABOTFri Aug 25 1989 12:1624
Not exactly what you want , but ....

I support my laziness with the following method.
Using EDIMAP I have modified USA-1 Keymap by adding a certain number of
commands to ALT-SHIFT-FUNCTION_KEYS that change the map used to
    another. E.g. Alt-SH-F1 change to K-ANALYZE keymap.

This keymap has attached to each Funct-key a commands that pertains to
it. F1 now automatically runs ANALYZE for my bank account, etcc...

Each key may have attached a command sych as:
Assign fonts: foo bar:fonts; foo bar

At the end of any activity, CRT-SHF-HELP brings the keymap of the
    previous level, etc...

SH-HELP automatically display an help file that shows the usage of the
    various key .

It may takes a little time to set it up, but then ... anyting is one
    key storke away !!

To be lazy is an art !

If it weren't for the smiley face that you put in I'd say:
Excuse me for living! I must have missed the policies of this conference
that declared it a "bad thing" to DISCUSS the Amiga and what we like and/
or dislike about it! Don't you think your replies tend to get a bit too
hostile <CB>? I didn't deserve an insult for expressing myself, did I?
(but I did see a smiley face, so I won't say that. :-)

Sounds like a good idea. Perhaps you don't understand why I would even post
such a topic:

     1) I have very strong VMS skills, but not very strong AmigaDOS skills.
When I posted this, I wasn't sure if what I was talking about could
be done. I figured that if it could be done, someone would correct
me and I'd be wiser and happier.
     2) I think .0 is a good idea, but I have NO proof that anyone else does.
Therefore I post also to get the opinions of others to see what they
think. (By the way, you never did really say if you liked or disliked
        the idea, <CB>)

Yes, but FONTS: was just an example. I could find lots of uses for more
flexible logical names.

Maybe I'm just having a bad day but the tone of your reply bothered me a bit.
Oh, by the way, my aplogies to the "baffled audience", I thought we were all
computing professionals.

    hhhhuuuuuuuuuuuu,

<CB> didn't mean it SOOOO (like it 'sounds'). Maybe he was under
heavy stress (answering questions about WB 1.4) and a lot of VMS-
installations, or have drunk some litres of BABBLE-water
    grrrrrrrrrrrrr :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

2862.7Why so defensive?NOBHIL::BODINE_CHFri Aug 25 1989 18:437
What inside line do you have to Commodore, <CB> ?
It always seems to me that you are more *personally* invested in
AMIGA futures than the rest of us.

    Seriously, I'm curious.

Aw, <CB> is out for the good of us all, really! His smiley's are *strong*
smileys, able to beat a harsh comment with one :-)

He's also a "registered developer" of some sorts, which in CBM's eye's,
gives him privileges of some sort. Makes getting info alot easier.

2862.9I did it again :-)FRAMBO::BALZERChristian Balzer DTN:785-1029Mon Aug 28 1989 08:0033
    Re: .5 - .8

    Uh, aw, eh, sorry!
I like to use irony and exageration to make my point, thanks for
    noticing the smilies.
BTW, I said that I like your idea Richard, look at the first part
of the first sentence. Otherwise I wouldn't have told you to go
ahead and tell CBM about it.
And since I'm not someone who will let people go on and try to
re-invent the wheel, I'm going to breach a little bit my non-disclosure
agreement with CBM and tell "the baffled audience" :-) the following:

In revision 1.4 of the Amiga operating system, specifically the
DOS, there will be provisions for both soft and hard links. While
not being the same as the proposal in .0, they'll do roughly the
    same as .2.

See the FRAIS2::Amiga_Tech conference or your comp.sy.amiga.tech for
    more details...

As far as my "inside line" to CBM is concerned, I think I mentioned
before that we (The Software Brewery) are commercial developers.
That means that we pay big bucks, ehr German marks, to get the best
support from CBM that money can buy (which unfortunately isn't much
    ;-)
I'm fortunate to also know quite a number of CBM people personally,
especially the engineers at West Chester, up to the level of Jeff
    Porter and Gail Wellington.

    Confused? Angered? Satisfied?
This public message was brought to you free of charge by

2862.10assignments might helpKAOA11::PACEYThu Apr 26 1990 16:1025
it's interesting to see how a good question has generated non-answers
by the 9th reply, not even discussing the casse-tete.
Have you played with the assignments that are little-used?
    try these formats:
    ASSIGN "F O O B A R :" hdisk:fonts
    or other funny formats,
    ASSIGN "Foobar:" "DHO:FONTS/wunder brot/myfonts"
if you use spaces in device names or file names, you need quotes
not many/any books/mags explain this aspect of the ASSIGN command
to get DPAINT II to run without ZEWZAP, try
    ASSIGN "DPAINT:" hdisk:dpaint ..or equally
ASSIGN "DPAINT:" "hdisk:dpaint" is acceptable if redundant.
to get MIND WALKER to run on hd, use
    Assign MWDisk: Hdisk:mwdisk
    Assign "MIND WALKER:" "hdisk:mind walker"
or just do it the simple way. these go in the startup file or type
directly into ClI every time you cold-boot.
Playing with quoted assignments has gotten rid of those
'put it back in df0:' requestors when running from a HD
Assignments look for their prey in three locations, in given priority.
you can trick you system by putting the 'samename' file at a higher
priority than the one normally intended. hope this helps.
