    	I'm not familiar with your terminal program but one suggestion
    	is to ARC your postscript file then transmit in binarary mode.
    	I've got upwards of 80% file compression on postscript files.
    	Another thing you may try is reducing the baud rate to 2400.

    The Amiga versions are found at TAPE::USER1:[AMIGA.ARC]. Both
    ARC023.ARC and ZOO200.ARC are useful (necessary) archival programs.
    The cooresponding VMS versions are around there somewhere. (You
    can also copy them from WHAMMY::DUA0:[AMIGA.BIN]ARC.EXE and ZOO.EXE)

    Directions for usage are detailed elsewhere. If you have any problems,
    just ask...

2817.5Try this...SMAUG::SPODARYKSick for toys!Tue Aug 15 1989 02:3035
    Well, I'll do my good deed for the day. In a nutshell

    1) Copy the files, and make the VMS ARC a foreign command.

         VMS$ ARC := $disk:[dir]ARC.exe

       Get help for ARC using - VMS$ ARC -h

    2) You'll need to get the Amiga ARC onto your home system, so maybe
       you can take that executable and use Kermit (whatever) to download
       it. Make sure the file is Stream_LF, so ARC won't choke on it.

         VMS$ CVTARC u ARC23.ARC ! this util also found on WHAMMY,
    			       		! make it a foreign command also.

    3) Then

         VMS$ ARC -v arc23.arc     	! For a listing

    4) Then

         VMS$ ARC -e arc23.arc AmigaArc ! extract the binary file

    5) Download it to your Amiga.

    6) Now you can package up your PS files using.

         Amiga$ ARC -a upload.arc file.ps    ! add file to archive

    7) And upload... piece of cake!

    If you can't download the binary, then you'll have to get the Amiga
    versions off of a floppy.

    Sorry about that Phil. I was entering that from home, and thought
    that the directories on my VS were setup properly.

    When you give it another try, let us know if you need any help. The
    process is painless once you have done it a few times. The archives
    do contain a lot of good software, and you should take advantage or it.

For doing any VTxxx related work, I use Handshake. For down/uploads I use
JRCOMM and the ZMODEM. It's fast and never gives me any trouble.

ZMODEM for VAX can be found at WJG::AMIGA:RZSZ.ARC as well as HANDSHAKE212.ZOO
and JRCOMM93.ARC

    I usually do something similar like John, allthough I hope that
    the new VLT plus the new xprZmodem library will give me the best
    of both worlds.

    BTW, does the VMS Zmodem archive contain source and docs??? I'm
    looking for the source to get it going on a 4.x system...

2817.15Neptune pics from NASA JPLWJG::GUINEAUImpossible ConcentrationTue Sep 12 1989 12:4313
USENET has been talking about the new NASA pictures of NEPTUNE available.
Unfortuneatly we DECies have no "copy" access to the usenet stuff and
the moderators claim these pics are too large to post (I guess about 2MB worth).

HAs anyone gotten hold of them?

WJG::AMIGA:NEPTUNE.IFF is one they did post. Looks neat on Amiga but
CSIX -> LJ250 was not too impressive. Not enough colors...

    Thanks to everyone who tried to give me a hand with this -

    unfortunately I have finally had a gutsfull of upload/download problems
    using various hardware,software and various pd gobbledygook....I am
    scrapping this whole idea - to be honest the idea of having to spend hours
    arcing/uploading/downloading/unarcing/zooing etc etc etc etc etc
    etc etc etc etc gives me a headache...

    Thanks anyway

For anyone interested, I took the relevant VMS stuff from RZSZ.ARC (the ZMODEM
source code) compiled it under VMS and put the object files (.OBJ) into
another zoo file along with a com file to link them on your version of VMS.

WJG::AMIGA:ZOBJ.ZOO has 4 files:

	SZ.OBJ     	Send ZMODEM code
	RZ.OBJ		Recieve ZMODEM code
	VVMODEM.OBJ	(VAX/VMS) Modem stuff common to both SZ and RZ
	LINK_SZRZ.COM	com file to link them both.

Un-zoo them, and type $ @LINK_SZRZ.  You'll get SZ.EXE and RZ.EXE

	The above directory contains some neptune images in gif
	format. Make sure you use binary mode to copy them
	if you aren't copying from another ULTRIX system (ie.
	use EXCHANGE/NETWORK/TRANS=BLOCK or SPOOL COPY/TRANS=BLOCK).

	Hurricane gabriel gif files are in:

		trix::"~michaud/usenet/gif/gabriel/*.gif"

	There is a copyright on the neptune images, and I'm not
	sure about the hurricane images.

Is there a gif viewer for DECwindows???

2817.24Hurricane Gabriel too please ?PUERTO::ALVAREZSo much work to do...so little timeWed Sep 20 1989 12:4016
    	John,
    		Thank you very much for copying the Neptune pictures.
    I had the same problem as Alan (file syntax error), and couldn't
    copy them.

    		Would it be too much to ask if you could copy Hurricane
    Gabriel pictures too ? This would be temporarily, until I copy them
    to my node, unless somebody else is interested. Thanks.

2817.29OK in this side of Puerto Rico...PUERTO::ALVAREZSo much work to do...so little timeWed Sep 20 1989 20:3911

    	Thanks for your concern Alan, there were no major problems in
    this area, only water and electricity interruptions. AGO is on the
    northwest corner, far from were disaster struck. In fact, business
    is as usual in this corner of Puerto Rico.

    P.S. Hurricane Hugo is the one that hit us, however you bet I'm
    now more interested in hurricanes !

2817.30Help needed: GIF programs don't fit in 512KLEVERS::PLOUFFcan't memorize Zen...Mon Sep 25 1989 16:1620
    Has anyone been able to view these images on a 512K machine? I
    tried `giffy' from GIFPICS.ARC, which works fine for low-res pictures
    in the archive. However, it just froze when looking at several
    Neptune and Hurricane Gabriel images.

    Next, I tried the conversion programs from GIFTOIFF.ARC (may be
    known as something else in one of the archive sites). The first
    program, `giftoraw,' worked fine, producing a 300+ Kbyte intermediate
    file. However, the second program, `rawtoiff,' quit immediately
    after loading. My guess: it requires too much memory for images
    and tables to fit into 512K.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Wes

    P.S. Usenet comp.graphics today carried an article from a fellow
    who had captured a couple of dozen hurricane Hugo images from U.S.
    and Soviet weather satellites, all available in GIF format to those
    lucky enough to be able to do FTP transfers over the Internet.

    John Guineau has solved the problem by making IFF versions of these
