2768.0. "How much damage?" by GIAMEM::I_SHAW (I hate LJ252-Amiga problems.) Thu Jul 27 1989 12:34

	I have a question about upgrading. I have a 500 with 1M and an extra
drive. How much (average) would it co$t to trade it in or swap etc. for
a 2000 with the same amount of drives (2)? Can some people give me an idea
which 2000 is best to get? What about the 2500?

thanks before the fact,

2768.1Pump the A500 maybe !KETJE::VLASIUThu Jul 27 1989 14:0619
    	I don't know the prices there but a 2000 is about twice the price
    of a (new) 500 (ok you have 1MB already) and:
    1. if you need not PC (more money to pay) and not number crunching, I
    think the new A590 (see note 2762) allows you to add (again money) 2MB
    obtaining finally A500 with 3MB 2 floppies and 20MB hard disk. For all
    this you pay the price of the A590 (it may be cheaper there) and 2MB of
    memory. To change to an 2000 with similar configuration means to buy a
    new 2000 minus about 25% (from your A500 sold). I don't find it
    interesting except...
    2. you want POWER (cpu) and in this case jump directely to 2500. It's
    more expensive but an 2000 processor & 32bit memory upgrade is also
    expensive.
    Me, I have choosed the first solution (still to buy 2MB memory) waiting
    to have money for a 2500 or 3000 (?) with the new graphics chips (it's
    also an aspect as they're not yet available).

    Good luck!

2768.2Expansion Just a good as A2000VIVIAN::S_GOLDSTEINSteve G...01-234-5935Thu Jul 27 1989 17:1911
    Have you thought about the expansions boxes you could at on to the A500
    expansion slot ...

    This give you depending on which one you go for 2,3,8,12 slots ( 12
    slot give you 6 A2000 + 6 AT comp. slots so I believe)

    With any of the above you could add any Hardcards,memory or even the
    A2620/A2630 CPU card...

    re: .2--You can't put an A2620 in an A2000 "slot". It has a dedicated
    location in the A2000.

2768.4well, here's what I decided...ATLV5::MCDONALD_JSurly to bed, surly to rise...Wed Aug 02 1989 19:3533
I just went through this about four or five months ago. I decided to sell my
A500 and get a B2000 (current version of the 2000). My reasons were:

  1) Didn't want stuff hanging off the side of my A500 (desk too small).
  2) Plan to get flickerfixer and/or enhanced chipset... maybe one day a
	larger monitor if they come out with it. (The 2000 has a video slot
	made for just such a beastie.)
  3) When money permits, I'd like to upgrade to a 68020 or 68030.
  4) Also when money permits, I'd like more serial ports, extra memory, and
	some sort of removable but fast media (10mb floppy?) With the
	A500, you have to get a subsystem to get slots, and then you get only
	two.  I think there's another A500 slot box, but I've heard it's 6
	inches tall. I don't want to have to sit on a stack of books just to
	reach my keyboard.  :-)
  5) (possibly the biggest reason) I got a case of 'hardware fever'. I started
	feeling as though I really NEEDED the detached keyboard, etc.

Anyway, I got my 2000 and a GVP HD40Q hardcard from my local dealer for $2300.
I bought a Mitsubishi DiamondScan multisync monitor from a mail-order company
in Texas for about $550.00, making for a total outlay of about $2850.00. I
don't have a second floppy drive, but I really haven't missed it at all.

I sold my A500 with extra disk drive, A501 memory/clock expansion, and 1084
monitor for about $800.00, I think. This means I ended up paying about $2000
to upgrade to an expandable 2000 with a 40 meg hardcard and a multisync
monitor. To get an A500 with a 40 meg hardcard, one extra slot, and a
multisync monitor, I would've put out around $1650.00 (mail-order). To me, it
seemed worth the extra $400.00 to get multiple extra slots, a video slot, an
alternate-processor slot, and to not have my small desk cluttered up with a
box-off-the-side (or have my A500 raised 2 inches by a Subsystem).

					Hope this helps,
					John
2768.5oops, almost forgot ...ATLV5::MCDONALD_JSurly to bed, surly to rise...Wed Aug 02 1989 19:3910
If you do decide to go the A2000 route, make sure you get a 2000 with the
newest motherboard. It's supposed to already have the new Fat Agnus chip on
it. And you may want to go ahead and get a multisync monitor as well. It's
not but around $150.00 more expensive than the 1084S, but the new chipset will
have a 640x400 non-interlaced mode (rumor has it) which will require a
multisync. Anyway, my DiamondScan doesn't have nearly as much interlace
flicker as my old 1084 had.

					Just thought I'd add that,
