2701.0. "External 3.5" Drive in I.B.M. mode ?" by VIVIAN::S_GOLDSTEIN (Steve G...01-234-5935) Thu Jun 29 1989 06:42

Does anybody know how to use an external 3.5" drive in I.B.M. 720k
	mode ?
The drive does not have a disable switch at the moment but this can
be added on to the drive (disconnet the sel line I think) later if
	needed.

This question has been asked by a friend because he has lots of
I.B.M. software and transformer (yes he know that he can only use
	non graphic S/W)

        		Thanks for any help

I must have missed something ... if he is using Transformer, his
internal 3.5" drive becomes the IBM drive. Transformer can read
the 720K disks fine, it just can't write beyond 360K. There is a
program called PCcopy and one called PCformat that comes with the
Workbench. If you run PCpatch, it will allow you to format and
write/read 720K IBM 3.5" diskettes on the Amiga under AmigaDOS.
Seems to be plenty of tools to get him to where he wants to be!

    Re .0
The be able to use the external or internal drive as a 720k disk
you must use drive "E:" for "A:" and drive "D:" for "B:". The drive
E and D are the driver to be able to use the 3.5" in full capacity.
The driver is getting loaded when you boot MSDOS

    Rene.

The problem with early versions of MSDOS is that they would not format 720K
3.5 disks. Some comanies like Zenith had an extra format program just for
the 720k disks.

I was one of the masohists that was using the Emulator and had copied that
program from a friendly ??? dealer. Newer versions of MSDOS have modified
the FORMAT program to allow you to do that.
