2697.0. "VT200 deadlock help needed" by MANTIS::LONG () Wed Jun 28 1989 14:22

Has anybody got any experience with full hangups of Leibow's VT200 emulator
V1.1a? I'm seeing a complete deadlock where even the mouse pointer fails to
move. No crash, no guru, just a full deadlock about once every two days.
This system runs 24 hours a day connected to work ( my wife is out on
maternity leave and I do work between late night feedings ). I have been
turning toys and tools off to see if I am having a resource conflict with no
apparent effect. The phone line occasionally gets real noisy. The only other
recent change has been the addition of a Fat Agnus. I'm running ARP 1.3,
whatever the latest version of MACH is, Virus-X 3.1. This is a B2000, rev3.9
with 2meg Starboard, 2090, and RD32.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2697.1Mach is/was buggyFRAMBO::BALZERChristian Balzer DTN:785-1029Wed Jun 28 1989 14:378

Although I don't remember a freeze bug in Mach-II 2.5 I wouldn't
recommend using Mach.
All versions of it showed more or less serious bugs.

I seem to remember Mach grabbing the audio device whenever it needed it
for it's beep. If another program politely asked for it, Mach would
freeze solid. I ditched it in favor of QMouse (only 3K!) which is very
well behaved.

I'm running ARP 1.3 without Mach or VirusX, and I've had VT200 1.1A
lock up occasionally. It doesn't happen a lot, and when it does it
always seems to be when the line is little noisy. The "Reset Term"
option in the "Utilities" menu usually unjams it.

2697.4will try qmouse or even QMOOSE!MANTIS::LONGWed Jun 28 1989 18:255
Re -1: The reset term option is not posible as I have NO control over the
machine ( frozen mouse pointer ). I'll give Qmouse a try.

Thanks,

re .all

same happens to me. I'm running a 'STANDART' configuration:
A2000B, 1 meg, DF0, DF1, 51/4" DF2, Omti 2256 with A.L.F. V1.6 and
RD53, FFS, KS1.3, WB1.3, NO mouse-tools, VT200 V1.1a

The system hangs when i got a noisy 1200 Bd line, a Term-Reset solve
this.
But, once or twice during a 3-5 hour terminal-session the mouse
pointer will be 'frozen' . Only a <CTRL-A-A> 'helps'.

2697.6so far so goodMANTIS::LONGThu Jun 29 1989 19:517
24 hours with QMOUSE15 and no problems so far. Is it possible that we could
also be looking at a virus of some type. VIRUSX 3.1 (???) doesn't show
anything regarding the hard drive, just floppies. XOPER doesn't show any other
tasks out of the ordinary but wouldn't it be possible to attach something to a
resident program?

Re: .6

I don't think you're infected. Let XOper check all the Reset and
the KickTag pointer(s). If thoose point to 0, everything should
be OK (for the current generation of viruses).
HD's are also immune to BootBlock type of viruses.
The only known link virus uses a pointer, too.

I have had problems with this sort of thing: hanging the machine with errant
and severe line noise. It seems there is a known bug in the serial.device and
a new version should be available before too long... along with other updates.

re: .8
Many thanks for this piece of news. Software can be fixed, hardware
intermittants at a frequency of days are next to impossible to find.

Thanks.

I don't know if your problem could be as simple as one I used to
have with a VT100 and modem. Sometimes the line noise would happen
to hit the XOFF (^S) character to the terminal not the host. Therefore
the keyboard would be XOFFed and the WAIT light LED would come on.
The only way to clear it was to reset the terminal. This might
not be your problem, but it is worth a check.

re: .10
No, it's a lot more serious than XOFF. This is a complete lockup,
no keyboard control (except ctrl amiga amiga ) and no mouse pointer
control.

I run SMOKEY with MACH and VIRUSX, and I do not experience the hang problem
you describe. I don't recall what versions I am running. I believe all
are latest and greatest version except smokey, where I stopped with the
last one I liked.

2697.13another hangupFRAIS2::ZIMMERMANNNCP> DEF MOD WORK DEST NL:Wed Aug 16 1989 08:5831

Sssssss,

another hangup. Here's the history:

Normal Boot
active tasks: initial CLI, one NEwSHELL, VirusX32, Amiga-Clock
(digital2-type)
Connected drives: DF0: with Boot_disk, DF1: & DF2: (empty)
DH0: (RD53 with Omti 5527 and ALF V1.6)
run VT200
ATD blah, blah
Login, set def, mc kermit, set file text, server
pull down to: Kermit send file
Transfer begins.............
Ralf decided to do some other things with the Amiga:
Select utilities, iconify VT200
doing: Copy Dir and Rename....
Klick the Smokey-Icon twice
the file transfer window appears with a running transfer
I try to move the title-bar a bit downwards

BUMMMM the mouse-pointer hangs
3 seconds later the GURU greets with the following message:
#81000005.00C0367E
and the system rebooted itself

Any comments ?

The Vt200.doc that I have warns of "Bugs" during kermit file transfers
while iconified.

Perhaps this is one of them..
