2589.0. "PCCopy Help needed" by WELSWS::FINNIS () Tue May 23 1989 09:46

Has anyone succeded in running PC720 (patched PCUtil)
    on a one drive system.
Mine never sees any files on the disk, the disk is visible
under SimpleIBMCopy so I do not think it is a disk compatible
    problem.

You'll have to provide more information than that ... if you are
using one drive, then the program would have to reside on a drive
other than the one floppy drive you have. You would have to have
PCcopy and PCc720 together on RAM: or VD0:. Also, if you are
diskchanging, you must click on the diskchange gadget on the PCc720
    copy menu.

Now, when you are talking about the program never seeing the files
on your disk, is this the IBM disk? I assume it is since you wouldn't
be able to read an Amiga disk on your one drive if the PCc720 program
was running. If that is the case have you told the PCc720 program
what type of disk format you are using on the IBM side? 360K or
    720K.

What type of computer are you using? 2000? 500? 1000? If you are
    using a 2000 with a 2620 board, you must run PCc720 from 68000 mode.
Are you using V1.1 Workbench or 1.2? PCc720 is designed to patch
PcCopy V1.1 (on V1.2 and V1.3 Extras disk).

    Hi..

I am not the original poster but I have had a problem running it
as well and the problem sounds the same.

    I am running a stock 2000 with one floppy, a 2090A and an ST225
with the fastfile system. I run PcC720 from the hard drive with a
PC floppy in DF0:. It will not read the directory when I hit the
diskchange gadget. I also tried PcF720 on a virgin floppy and got
an error 4 when I tried to format either 360 or 720 density.

I am using the the PcCopy from the Workbench 1.3 distribution and
I have two IBM 720K formatted floppies that I am sure are OK.

Maybe there is a problem in using DF0: as the IBM source disk
    because of the autoconfigure?

                Any help appreciated.... Clint

Have you defined the file format? There is a program that comes
with the PCc720 and PCf720 programs called FileFormat or some such
name. The defaults values for the PCx720 programs are incorrect
for 3.5" floppies. For example, the starting data sector is incorrectly
    defined.

Also, the PCx720 can not handle High Density disks.

The programs work fine on my 2000.

2589.4The ammended Help pleaWELMTS::FINNISThu May 25 1989 10:2920
    Sorry Sorry,
    		I am running an A500 with Workbench/kickstart Rom 1.3.
I copy the PCUtil and the PCPatch programs to ram: and run them
    from there .
I have several IBM formatted disks with files on that I can
read with SimpleIbmCopy (Well very nearly).
I also tried formatting a disk and got the error 4.
Since I know someone with an Atari who can also read these IBM
disks, I tried the AtariD disk definition file. Also with no luck.

The drive that is formatting these disks is the High Density
type in 720K mode ,if this makes any difference.

It does not invalidate the drive because I can still read from
DF0: under AmigaDos after running the Program.

    		Help.........!

If it is a high density disk, the program will not work. It states
that in the documentation. A high density disk has what looks
like a right protect hole on the side opposite the actual write
protect hole. And, I believe the logo HD somewhere on the disk.
They cost about $8 apiece, so your friend is wasting good money
using them on a 720K drive!!

2589.6It works for me!BNCHMK::DEBRUYNTony - my AMIGA DOS it all for meThu May 25 1989 14:3224
I installed the latest version of PCPATCH a week ago and have not had
any problem using it. My configuration is a 1000 with 2 floppy drives.
I did not have to modify the programs in any way, they worked just as
they were unarced. So far I have tried PcC720 with two different
disks, one formatted on some (unknown) IBM PC or clone and one
formatted with PcF720. I was able to read and write to the disks using
PcC720 and then read and write them using the PCDISK program on a
VAXstation 3100. I am thrilled with this combination, since it doubles
the capacity of my old "sneaker net" using a VAXmate.

I did find that if I had PcC720 running in one window and changed the
disk that the PC allocated drive was not visible/accessible from any
other windows. This may be a more serious problem in your one drive
situation. I regularly start PcC720 on DF1, select DF1 as the PC
drive to use and then swap in my PC disk. If I don't time it right
the drive light goes on for what seems a long time (10 - 15 seconds)
and then I have to select the change disk option on the PcC720 screen
before I see the PC disk directory.

In using various PCcopy programs in the past, the best results have
always come from doing the formatting on the AMIGA.

2589.7HD works too.....for me?BNCHMK::DEBRUYNTony - my AMIGA DOS it all for meThu May 25 1989 14:4213
I just read .5 about using HD disks. At least one of the two disks
that I have successfully used is a HD disk with the extra square hole.
I agree that it is a tremendous waste of money, but I think it works
OK. I believe that the HD issue has to do with attaching a HD (1.2Meg,
1.4Meg, etc) drive to the AMIGA. From what I have read (here in notes)
the problem is thta the special chips can not handle the disk geometry,
but other people can explain that aspect better.

It occurs to me a I am writing that an other issue may be the specific
model of drive used in newer Amiga models. The newer disk drives may
have circuitry to read the new hole that is totally ignored by my older
    1000 drives.

2589.8BAGELS::BRANNONDave BrannonThu May 25 1989 16:1314
HD works mostly for me too. But I have encounted cases where
DOS-2-DOS got errors reading files that could be read just fine
on the 1.44M drive (on a Compaq) that formatted and wrote that
    disk as 720K.

It's not a 100% reliable way to transfer files because of that,
but sure is a lot faster than using a modem.

I suspect only the 1.44M drives have anything to check for that
extra hole. Some will refuse to format as 1.44M unless the disk
    has that extra hole.

I still can not get it to work. I have seen a couple of reports
on the UseNet about people having trouble making it work on DF0:.

I brought up the FormatEditor and it displayed the default
parameters. If they have to be changed, could someone post them.
I thought that PcC720 already defaults to an PC type format.

Is there anyone who has made this work on a one drive system or
even on DF0: on a multiple drive system.

Sure would like to get this working..... Clint
2589.10DF0: works OK too...WKSHOP::DEBRUYNTony - my AMIGA DOS it all for meWed May 31 1989 13:277
I ran a test last night using PcC720 on my drive DF0: and I could read and write
to it with no problems. My system is a multi-drive A1000, so I ran PcC720 from
DF2: (5" drive), put the MSDOS disk in DF0: and copied files to and from DF1:.
I have never had to use the Format editor to adjust any parameters. I know this
does not help you solve the problem, but maybe it will give you confidence that
the software will work. I will be glad to run some other tests if you think it
would help in any way.
2589.11It's an OS bug...FROCKY::BALZERWed May 31 1989 13:5815

The problem with PCCopy/PCPatch lies in an OS bug. This has
recently been discussed on UseNet. It's the RawRead/RawWrite function
for those who care about such things.
Anyway Werner Gunther (PcPatch author) has posted a little program
that tells if your system (the bug occurs only at certain setups,
like a single drive) suffers from this bug.
He's also busy writting a replacement for the faulty routines, so
that the next release of PcPatch should work like a charm.

I'll put the test program at FRAMBO::BZOEVFL:[BALZER.WORLD] tomorrow.

    Great...

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will hang on to that disk full of
GIF pictures for a while longer and wait for the new version.
