2572.0. "Looking for Video Tools on Tap" by LEVERS::PLOUFF (Wait a Nanojiffy) Wed May 17 1989 16:50

    From the June _Amigaworld_ review of the Magni genlock...

    "Using the public-domain program VTOT (Video Tools on Tap), I displayed
    SMPTE bars, full-field color bars, and a gray scale through the

    Has anyone heard of or seen VTOT?

2572.1Still seeking VTOTLEVERS::PLOUFFcan't memorize Zen...Sun Oct 01 1989 01:095
    Still looking for this program, or anything similar which can display
    a gray scale and color bars. Surely people use something other
    than the JPL Neptune pictures to adjust their monitors! :-) :-)

2572.2Found, and recommendedLEVERS::PLOUFFcan't memorize Zen...Fri Nov 03 1989 02:4019
    There's something that might be said about a fellow who answers
    his own notes... :-) :-) However, I've found Video Tools on Tap,
    or VTOT, on the October 1989 issue of _Jumpdisk._ Since it's freeware,
    it's now uploaded to

    	TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]VTOT.ZOO

    VTOT turns out to be a nice little (<10K) video test pattern generator.
    It includes gray scale, SMPTE color bar pattern and a black and
    white grid pattern, as well as other effects. VTOT effects are
    invoked with left shift-Amiga-letter combinations on the keyboard.

    I found it useful to adjust my monitor. Then I could show the full
    contrast range of some of the HAM pictures uploaded in the last couple
    of weeks. After that I had to adjust my Workbench color preferences
    to be comfortably dimmer. But the improvement in the looks of pictures
    was well worth the small effort.

2572.3Does it work?CGOO01::POPOFFSat Nov 04 1989 04:054
    Is it just left-shift,left-Amiga and letter to get it to work?
    What am I doing wrong?

    Gee ! I couldn't make it run from the workbench either ....

    Does it have any special requirements like "must be in the root
    directory" or something.

    I put it in another draw. When double click the Icon it appears
    that something is loaded from disk but I con't get a window and
    no commands seem to work.

2572.8Uploaded again...LEVERS::PLOUFFcan't memorize Zen...Tue Nov 07 1989 01:598
    Gee, fellas, I must have goofed in the uploading process. Please
    disregard my earlier reply (now deleted). VTOT does indeed run
    from both Workbench and CLI.

    I re-ZOOed the files and uploaded them again to TAPE::. Try again,
    and my apologies for the original bad archive.

    Agree with .-1

    Still broke.....

    I noticed the only difference in the old and new copied of VTOT.ZOO
    is that the size of the .DOC file in the new on went up slightly.

2572.11It's got me stumpedLEVERS::PLOUFFcan't memorize Zen...Wed Nov 08 1989 14:3519
    I'm baffled. The first version must have been munged in the upload
    process, because it didn't run at all when I downloaded it again. The
    second time, I uploaded it to my home node using Kermit with the
    command SET FILE TYPE BINARY and downloaded it again. After unZOOing,
    VTOT ran just fine.

    The only things I can think of are 1) make sure that the VMS file
    organization you have for VTOT.ZOO is compatible with the file transfer
    program (STREAM-LF for Kermit, VARIABLE for XMODEM), and 2) if using
    Kermit, be sure to set the file type to binary.

    The executable is odd in that it doesn't appear to be compressed
    with PowerPacker or Pak, but doesn't get any smaller when ZOOed.
    I wonder if the executable really is compressed somehow in a way
    that clashes with ZOO's coding?

    Has anybody but myself gotten a downloaded version to work?

    It worked for me on my unexpanded 1000 from the workbench.
    	I didn't try it from the CLI [02;04;011;035	This was with the
    1sty zoo'd file.

2572.13Worked OK for me.GIDDAY::LAWSONWed Nov 08 1989 19:1518
    It worked OK for me.
    I downloaded on 2 NOV.

    The relevant things about my config are:

    A500/A501
    WB1.3 plus 1.3.2 mods
    ARP1.3
    Qmouse
    VLT with ZModem

    I dont recollect any probs, in fact i think I ran it from CLI (ASHELL)

    It's just a little unusual to see the window Upside down....but then ,
    where I come from, maybe that isn't all that unusual!!!!!!

    Cheers,

       I downloaded it last night and like the majority of respondents,
       couldn't get it to work.

       I have an A1000 with ARP.

2572.17Worked for me.STAR::ROBINSONThu Nov 09 1989 16:299
     I downloaded it and it worked fine from the icon!
     FWIW I have A500, 1meg (old agnus), ARP, qmouse, and
     WB1.3 (no upgrade to 1.3.2 yet).

     I did notice some strangeness with the qmouse clock which always
     pops to the top of the workbench. When I flipped the screen
     horizontally or vertically, the reversed clock stayed around
     after I switched back. Interesting program.

2572.19it must be something simple!!!FSCORE::KAYEHe who dies with the most toys is deadTue Nov 14 1989 22:229
I got the new copy again & moved all 4 files onto hd0:
If i click on hd0, i get 2 icons for vtot, vtot itself & the docs. If
i strighten out the pointer to c:more, the doc icon works. However, the
vtot icon just flashes. What are the people doing different to get it
to work?

It seems so simple...
2572.20Sensitive to environmentBOMBE::MOOREBaN CaSe_sEnSiTiVe iDeNtIfIeRs!Sat Dec 09 1989 01:033
    I've been unable to get VTOT to run in my normal environment, but it
    did work when I booted a standard 1.3 workbench floppy. Looks like
    some kind of conflict with other programs, etc.
2572.21One year later... VTOT still doesn't workKALI::PLOUFFAhhh... cider!Wed Nov 14 1990 03:1515
    Old topic... When I upgraded from an A1000 to a 2000 this year, VTOT
    quit working. I played around with the packing, ran nofastmem, tried a
    bunch of different stuff, and still it wouldn't work. Even called the
    author's BBS in California... still no luck.

    I wrote to Mike Berro, the author, and got this reply:

    "VTOT v1.00 indeed has a problem running on certain Amiga systems. I
    have not remedied it because VTOT will soon be a commercial product."

    He went on to say that the product would ship "in approximately two
    months," or about December 1, 1990. I'll post more info when the sales
    flyer arrives.
