2529.0. "BA23 Ext. drive box?" by SHARE::DOYLE () Wed May 03 1989 16:43

    Can someone assist me?
I thought that a BA23 was a hard drive box with a power supply.
I figured that it also came in a desk top model.
My problem is I can only find references (inderect) to this
    unit, and no specs.
No idea how to order it either, assuming it's what I need.
I had hope to use this as an external drive box for a RD32.

    						Thanx

As I recal BA23's are system boxes, standing maybe 2 1/2' high.

As I recall it, the BA23 is also called the "pedestal box". It is/was
    used for low-end MicroVax I's, II's, and Micro PDP-11's. And the BA123
is called the "world box" for higher-end MicroVaxes and GPX's. I
believe the BA23 could be rack-mount or free-standing.

re .2 that's correct. But, when you using the ba23 if your two drive
slots are used up (stndr. config is a tkxx and a drive (rd53) then you
have to resort to using a disk expansion box which is what I suspect .0
is after. So the answer is yes, it is a box with a power supply and
some switches and fan. I would suspect that since the cable that plugs
into this beasty is not compatible with your controller, you are going
to have to run some long (3ft) st506 or SCSI cables out of the box.

but it seems quite feasable to me.

You might want to look into the "LEPRECHAUN" box. (BA213?) It holds one drive
with a power supply and a fan. It will sit on a table and is much smaller.

    A BA213 is a MicroVAX 3600 .. not a leprechaun box. You can
get some old Professional-series expander boxes real cheap from
Employee Purchase. They contain a power supply and fan and have
mounting rails for full or half height devices. I believe the
    DEC-dDirect part number is PC-XXX.

    A BA23 is a MicroVAX II pedestal.

If I may suggest, call Integrand and ask for their catalog. They
specialize in disk drive enclosures complete with power supplies.
Lots of configurations to choose from and come complete with emi
filters and connector cutouts on the rear - DB25, 50pin SCSI,
        etc.
