    RE: .1   No such directory for both file specifications.

    I get an error message to the affect "directory does not exist".
    Is the disk name missing from the file specification?

    I just (prepared to) upload VT100 V2.9 to my A500 at home.  When I
    down/upload from/to the net I have been using Kermit and want to
    start using Zmodem which promises to be much faster.
    
    Thanks to Vt100 V2.9 I will be using SZ/RZ and have secured Sz.EXE
    and Rz.EXE from the net for my VAX.  The problem is this.  I log in
    via TSN.  Long ago I couldn't get Xmodem to work but could get Kermit.
    I was told this was because TSN (thats the "please type your terminal
    identifier","please log in:" system) reserved a bit for its own use
    and Xmodem required this bit.  Sure enough, calling direct I can 
    download via Xmodem (and pay AT&T $$$...).
    
    So, YADQ (Yet another download query), does anyone use TSN and
    X/Zmodem?  If so, what settings on the LAT?  Terminal Identifier on
    TSN?  Terminal Characteristics on the VAX?  (inshort everything).
    
    Presently with VT200 V1.1 I use TSN Terminal Type 'a', and I set the
    LAT to SET SESSION PASSALL.  I haven't changed my VAX Term Chars.  And
    this all works with Kermit but is, of course, dreadfully slow.
    
    Any help or am I stuck with Kermit as long as I use TSN?

 OK Paul. What does no special settings required mean?  I tried 
 downloading a text file and a zoo file using AZCOMM and JRcomm 
 through a TSN. I have used these ZMODEMS successfully with a direct 
 dial up. Going through TSN I received all kinds of CRC errors, bad data 
 errors, & timeouts during what turned out to be succesfull downloads 
 (I was amazed the zoo file unzooed) but the slow transfer speed was 
 ridiculous!  JRcommm estimated 2 minutes for zmodem 2400 baud and the 
 result was 17 minutes! Is this the stanard penalty for using TSN, or 
 are your not-so-special ;-) settings better than my not-so-special
 settings?  I have been using kermit with TSN; it is slow but this 
 seemed even slower.

 I used a straight   $ SZ  filename     on the VMS side and stream_lf file.
 
 I'd like to Download VLT but not at this transfer rate.

 Thanks for any advice on terminal/serial/modem/LAT settings etc.

I am using VLT and the default xprzmodem settings. I've also used JRcomm
successfully although I haven't used it in awhile. JRcomm appears to be
significantly faster than VLT on zmodem transfers (nearly 25% faster if
the displayed transfer rate info is accurate). If you are curious
about my term settings on the VAX, here they are:

Well, it will be slower than a direct dial. As far as the errors are 
concerned, it might have something to do with 2400 baud.

Hmmm ... I didn't realize that we had any 2400 baud TSN lines around
here. What numbers are you using that support 2400 baud?

 My list of numbers includes the number (617)439-3531 2400 baud in 
 Cambridge/Boston.  I noticed that it is a TYMNET rather than a TSN, but
 I have no idea what the difference is. I have used both in the past
 and they seemed to be similar - I didn't bother to find out the differences.
 I'll try a 1200 baud TSN tonight and see what happens.

Well, I tried the 1200 baud line and the results are the same - slow. I fooled 
around setting the VMS terminal to eight bits, seven bits, pass this and that, 
but did not get an improvement. The 1200 baud was slower. Jrcomm 
said ~23char/sec and I think I was getting ~30 at 2400 baud.

I will try this. This advise actually looks somewhat familiar. I guess it is 
time to re-read the old notes and the TSN handout I have. If I figure out 
something that makes any sense I'll post a new "Downloading through TSN" note.

    Can anyone tell me where I can get the rz.exe and sz.exe VMS files.

I think there's a SZ.EXE, RZ.EXE and RZSZ.ARC

    Can anyone tell me where I could find the latest issue of
    VMS Zmodem on{the net?  The ones in WJG::AMIGA: DON'T WORK FOR ME,
Looks like a runtime librarary incompatibility. I'm down loading from HYDRA
which is at VMSV5.1. When I try 'SZ file' I get the following:

$ sz test.tmp
%DCL-W-ACTIMAGE, error activating image VAXCRTL
-CLI-E-IMGNAME, image file $1$DUS901:[SYS5.SYSCOMMON.][SYSLIB]VAXCRTL.EXE

This is my first try at Zmodem, but I believe all I need are the .exe files
and to define the following in my LOGIN.com. I've confirmed with show symbol
tha they got defined, so I'm out of ideas.


$ RZ        :== $ DISK$BOAEN:[BOAEN.EXE]RZ
$ SZ        :== $ DISK$BOAEN:[BOAEN.EXE]SZ

	I tried to copy the  EXEs from:

	CGOU01::DUA1:[PUBLIC.TOOLS]SZ.EXE,RZ.EXE 

, as{mentioned in 2522.4, but the directory doesn't seem to be around anymore.

Am I failing to setup something?

OK. I compiled the stuff, now copy   

	WJG::AMIGA:SZ.OBJ, RZ.OBJ, VVMODEM.OBJ 


to the system  you need rz/sz on.


Then type:


	$ define lnk$library sys$library:vaxcrtl
	$ link sz,vvmodem
	$ link rz,vvmodem


And you'll have linked versions for whatever VMS you're running.
