2426.0. "Star Trek ... The Game" by AUNTB::PRESSLEY () Mon Apr 03 1989 17:25

Has anyone played the latest Star Trek shareware game? It's
pretty good. When you check the status of the Engine Room,
Scotty answers, I I Captain, along with Sulu's response of
course laid in sir. The intro is great. If I were to shut my eyes
I'd think that the television show was on. The graphics are well
done and although I'm only 2 years into my five year mission, the
game plays well also. During the game you will be contacted by
Star Fleet Command to carry out orders. On your journeys to various
planets Klingons and Romulons get in your way. The blasts felt
by the enterprise are very realistic. A couple of times I thought
my monitor was going to fall off my desk.

Just a few questions....how much memory does this require( you
mentioned 2 disks worth of data)? Do they stay in all the time?
And how much sharing is the author asking for? It sounds like a
lot of fun and it is something I want to get. I'll send you the
    required material.

Careful. I think you're inviting an avalanche of E-mail requests. (I aborted
in the middle of sending you mail, since I figured EVERYONE in this notesfile
has probably done so already.)

Maybe we could talk someone with a fast AMIGA<=>VAX link (like an amiga at
work) into getting the game, ZOOing it, and uploading it to NORSE or
someplace? I believe folks would think it worth downloading, even if it IS
huge, but if you get 100,000 requests for copies of the game, your drive'll
wear out before you can get it to everyone. :-)

I'd like to echo the thoughts echoed in this note, surely there
is someone who could upload the disks to NORSE or elsewhere. I'd
like to ask that if someone DOES do this that they use WARP instead
of or in addition to ZOO.

If no one with a high-speed link to the vax wants to upload, I'll
be glad to get the disks and do it myself.
2426.12STOUT::MCAFEESteve McAfeeThu Apr 06 1989 20:5011
I'd like a copy myself, if someone could upload it. But, please, don't
use Warp. Those of us who do not have reliable phone lines cannot
download an entire Warp file without something going wrong. Zoo is
fine due to the fact that we have VMS zoo (i.e. I can break the file up
if I want.) WARP doesn't seem very reliable to me anyhow. I've had it
comeback and say the un-warping didn't work when in fact it did and
visa versa. Also I don't believe you can unWARP to/from a hard disk.

Although WARPing Star Trek does seem oddly appropriate :-).

I've played the Star Trek game. I'd say two things about it...

    1. It is an outstanding example of just how wonderful the Director
        software is.

    2. Playability really suffers on a floppy based system. It's kind of
like using Hypercard on a floppy based Macintosh. If you really
want to play the game, you should (and can) install it on a hard
        drive.

The game will allow you to copy the sound disk to RAD if you have
at least 2 megs of memory. The game itself requires 1 meg.
The files are in warp format plus some text files. Since I'm not
playing golf this weekend, I'll give the uploading idea a shot.
It takes several hours at 2400 baud. I will arc all the text and
warp files together and pray that a thunderstorm doesn't hit when
    I'm 95% finished.

The files are Stream_LF and were uploaded with Zmodem. In this
format they are also compatible with VMS Zoo, to use VMS Sweep you
will need to convert them to Fixed.

Due to the popularity of these files (I was unable to login to the
system after lunch due to 18 decnet links) these files will be
protected from 08:30 to 17:00 MST for the next little while.

I have not been able to reach NORSE today so I shall copy the files

    Help!
I copied the startrek files to my directory, then copied them from
my m: drive, (using pcsa) to my a: drive (floppy).
Then I brought them home to my Vaxmate and proceeded to U/L them
to my Amiga VIA a null modem at 19200 baud.
When I tried to un-zoo them I received bad crc in header warnings.
    Things used and tried:

Copied to my directory from tape::user1 (hooked in at 19200 baud).
Ran cvtarc on them to make them kermitable.
Copied from M: drive (networked) to A: drive using PCSA
Brought home and tried transfering to my Amiga at 19200 baud using
    Handshake (Amiga), Procomm (Vaxmate)
    then -
    Handshake (Amiga), Kermit (vaxmate)
    then -
    Xmodem protocol on both.
    Kermit (7&8 bit) on both.
Send smaller pcket size(50) using kermit.
But always ended up with the same error when un-zooing.
I know that I'm doing something wrong, but what?
Also this is not an Isolated incident as I seem to be having
the same problems with many other files either arced, or zooed.
Its enough to make me quit...
Is there anyone out there who can help?
    							Thanx.
P.S. What is VMS zoo? VMS sweep?
Do these run in the network enviroment?

Well, I have correctly un zooed my copies, but I cant't get them
to work. What should the disks be called? Right now mine are called
StarTrek and StarTrek2. Everything seems to work fine when I boot
with the disks. When I start the game, the game loads for about
30 seconds, the screen goes blank and then nothing.

    Any ideas?

This screen blanking thing seems to be happening more often, so
it might be a problem with my system. When I un zooed the files,
the screen would go blank for no reason at all. The system would
continue to un zoo, but only a reboot would bring the screen back.

StarTrek and StarTrek2 are the right disk names.

This program really seems to want every last byte of mem on a 1meg
machine. I've got three floppy drives, and ST wouldn't work until I
switched one off (a nice feature on the MAST twindrives, btw). The
main display would come up, but the first couple of gadget pushes
would cause a guru. The game works okay now with the third drive
disabled, but I've yet to see the startup graphics Jimbo says are in
    there.

    - Cliff
2426.34HPSCAD::GATULISFrank GatulisThu Apr 13 1989 15:4029

It may be normal. According to the read-me, the screen is supposed
to go blank. Indeed, mine does, for about 30seconds in the middle
of the load it turns grey and the disks go silent (it's documented).

Then they take off an the load continued. When I ran it the first
time (according to the instructions) the credits never appeared
and I thought something was wrong. It was actually due to the fact
that the game was ZOO'd after being played once and the intro
animation is bypassed. You can re-enable it from a menu when the
game starts (IMO - the intro is the best part).

I guess is a good game considering it's shareware but I personally
don't care for it (I'd never buy it if it were commercial). I found
it slow and boring (cute for the first 15 mins but after that it
didn't seem very interresting). Load/wait times are terrible
from floppy and I didn't like it enough to bother putting it hard
disk. User interface seems to be locked out each time the game
goes to disk for something. I had it running with absolutely
nothing else and it still freezes on me occasionally.

I guess it's not my type of game, but then I own Dragon Lair and
hate it also (nice demo but not much fun).

I load the second disk into rad so the game runs fast enough, but
it's too easy to beatup on the klingons and romulons.
2426.36Two dimensions, how quaint!MEIS::ZIMMERMANFresh from the sewer!Mon Apr 17 1989 06:3022
I agree with .34 - the digitized sound is a nifty gimmick, but
    the game isn't great.

For one thing, 2D space games are very tacky - they're holdovers
from the days when games were written in Tiny Basic on 4K machines.
These days a decent space game should have 3 or maybe even 4 or more
    dimensions.

For another, the game doesn't seem to be well thought out. For
example, if one of the game objectives is to complete missions, then
it might be interesting to optimize travel. But the game doesn't
give any distances or directions to the various planets and bases,
so you don't know what's close to what. There aren't enough
missions, either, so you spend a lot of time just hanging around.
Exploring's no fun because you already know what's in the galaxy
(even though you don't know where it is).

Jimbo's got a way to go before this is the "best Star Trek game
    ever".

Actually, if you select MAP from the screen type display, you get the
2D (yes, ARGH!) coordinates of each place. My roomate has made a real good
detailed map of the entire StarTrek galaxy on paper. If anyone wan't
one, mail me and I'll put a copy in the mail to you. (Hey, maybe my sister would
scan it in and I could post it..., Hmm). Anyway, from this map it's easy to
see what's where.

I agree it needs more missions and 3D space. Maybe next version...

BTW - Put it on a Hard Disk, you'll like it even better!

Ok, I would like to hear some suggestions or comments about my
STAR TREK game before I go into my annual summer programming coma.
If you have any ideas or features you would like to see in the next
version please speak now before my bit-net access ends on May 4th.
Some comming attractions: Animated video segments, totally re-written
from the ground up, easier star selection, more sound bytes (sorry
about the pun), full color digitized screens in HAM. The rest is a
supprise. I figure I should have the next version out by the end f
of summer, (I like to enjoy my time off too!!).
Well, the ball is in your court, what would you like to
see!!

Hmmm. The author of the Star Trek game I've been playing is Jimbo

You're right. I read the usenet article at work and didn't check to see
if the author was the same. Has anyone seen this other Startrek game?
