2355.0. "PROwrite/Kindwords/Excellence" by ADODEM::MCGHIE (Still looking for a door...) Sun Mar 12 1989 22:37

    Hi again,

    Another question relating to Wordprocessors.

    I've looked through notes and looked at a number of magazine reviews
    and have come to the conclusion that the following are worth
    considering :-

    	PROWRITE
    	KINDWORDS
    	EXCELLENCE

    I would like a WYSIWIG style editor that supports fonts and graphics
    (why else have and Amiga !) and that it repsonds in a reasonable
    fashion.

    Currently I am  using TEXTcraft+.

    So any comments on positive or neagtive aspects of the above products
    would be appreciated.

    thanks and regards

2355.1ProWrite and KindWordsSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterMon Mar 13 1989 09:5817
    I have used ProWrite and KindWords. I like ProWrite because it lets me
    put text and graphics on the same line, and because of ProScript, which
    converts ProWrite documents to PostScript. (I have a PostScript
    printer.) I see two significant lacks in ProWrite/ProScript: it
    doesn't support multi-column, and it supports very few PostScript
    fonts. (It supports Amiga fonts, but they look ugly when magnified to
    300 dpi.)

    KindWords has a better spell checker than ProWrite, and can print a few
    fonts at 300 dpi, but its graphics support isn't as good (I don't
    remember details). Also, my copy is unwilling to read or write files
    on a FFS disk: I have to copy a file to RAM, edit it, and copy it back
    to disk.

    I prefer ProWrite because of its better graphics and support of FFS
    disks. My wife prefers KindWords because of its better spell checker.

2355.2Kindword about KindWordsDPDMAI::ANDERSONAFri Mar 17 1989 01:2515
    I bought KindWords a week ago so far I am happy with it. I have
    not had any problem using it with a Hard disk and FFS (VER 1.2B).
    But it must be used with a non interlaced screen. If not it hangs
    on startup and you have to reboot. It comes with three fonts all
    Roman 8,12, and 14. With the normal bold, underline, and italics.
    There is also a line drawing font. The spelling program is good.
    The output looks good on my Star Micronics NX1000. It was part
    of the Critics Choice Package. KindWords , MaxiPlan 500, and
    MicroFiche Filer for $99.00 from Abel Supply.

    My opinion it is a good middle of the road word processor. But
    there are better (they cost more to).

    re .-1 - we have also purchased the critics choice (or parts of
    it) from a friend who split the package....

    we have kindwords and Microfiche filer

    I have a quick question about kindwords....Can it produce landscape
    printing and if so - how can it be done???
2355.4Excellence! Postscript Output for an LPs40NITMOI::WITHERSSo shines a good deed in a weary world..Mon Aug 14 1989 18:166
    Assoicated to my question on Profession Page, does Excellence!
    Postscript output only work with the fonts on the LPS40 or does
    it output a bitmap type image?

2355.5Excellence - postscriptHPSCAD::GATULISFrank GatulisMon Aug 14 1989 19:1959
    I use Excellence all the time with LPS40 postscript.

    Excellence comes with a set of Postscript Compatible fonts which
    named -

     PHelvitica (8,12,16,24)
     PCourier (8,12,16,24)
     PTimes (8,12,16,24)
     PSymbol (8,12,16,24)

    They all work fine on the LPS40 along with bit map stuff from
    Excellence. If you write a postscript file with any other Amiga
    font, Excellence merely bitmaps it out at Amiga resolution. I've
    never had to edit a postscript file to make it print (I wouldn't
    know where to start).

    I've used the following Amiga fonts and Excellence bitmapped them
    correctly -

    2001
    AMSLAM
    Barn
    Camelot
    Carmella
    ClipArt1
    ClipArt2
    Coop
    Copland
    DMCS
    Diamond
    Deborah
    Emerald
    Garnet
    ICON
    Long
    Midevial
    MUro
    MFast
    MScript
    Outline
    Patricia
    PCfont
    Serpentine
    Souveneir
    StarTrek
    Swiss
    Stencil

    For some reason .. I couldnt get the following to work and
    never tried to figure out why -

    ZapfDingbats ans ZapfChancery  !!

    I've also included IFF pictures (black/white) and they seem to work.

    ProWrite/ProScript lets you toggle a gadget that performs font
    substitution. Or, it will print out the bitmapped Amiga font without
    any hassles.

    Thanks for info!

    Now I can't wait to try it out (I'm currently away at training, hence
    the reason I didn't just try it and see).

2355.8Trouble with Excellence! to LPS40NITMOI::WITHERSSo shines a good deed in a weary world..Thu Sep 07 1989 13:2810
    I just tried Excellence! Postscript output to my LPS40. The first
    page came out fine, after that it complained unrecoginized font or
    bad directory name. [?] And even the first page the text was there
    but the background of the words was a grey pattern, not white.

    The fonts used were all Amiga-only so it was working with bitmaps.
    Anybody ever see similar?

2355.9Help with excellence! ?CLOSUS::J_BUTLERUSAR...and ready...Thu Jan 10 1991 18:4015
    My daughter just got excellence! version 2.0 for her A500 (w/A501).

    Following the instructions, she booted it up, but
    never got the "Project Window" that the documentation says is
    supposed to appear. The screen stays with the startup window.
    She can select any of the icons (rawer, utilities, etc). She just
    can't get a project window!

    She is using Workbench V1.2.

    Any ideas from excellence! users?

    Thanks!

    Well, I'll try .....

    I don't think excellence! 2.00 is bootable, mine isn't.
    The following should work - I just did it:

    1. boot a workbench
    2. insert excellence! disk-1 and open up its window. You'll see
        - 2 drawers (documents & utilities)
        - a read-me-first icon
        - the excellence icon (the big "e")
    3. double click the excellence! icon and the program will load and
       automatically start (be patient, it's slow from floppy). First the
       title bar will appear and then a window called UNTITTLED will pop
       open. That's your project window (or blank sheet). Your ready
       to go.

    Also - when you get it up, check the version (use the ABOUT menu
    item). The current version is 2.00b If you don't have that, you
    can call the tech support line and they'll tell you how to upgrade
    (it's free).

    Good luck,
    Frank

2355.11Followed the steps, but still no window...CLOSUS::J_BUTLERUSAR...and ready...Fri Jan 11 1991 11:0022
    Thanks!

    I guess I was a little careless in using the term "boot!" :)

    She did follow the steps you outlined, but the title bar and
    window marked "untitled" never did appear. The disk was accessing
    for awhile, then stopped, and the pointer changed back to its
    normal appearance...but nothing else. She even waited about 5 minutes
    (got a snack, etc), but still no go.

    This sounds like a job for Tech Support, I guess!

    She's still 2 weeks from going back to college, so I guess there's
    time to get it fixed!

    Thanks, again!

    How big is her A500? Are you trying to run a program that requires 1MB
    of memory in a basic 512KB machine? If you open a CLI/Shell window
    first and do an AVAIL before and after attempting to start Excellence!
    what do you see? (You may need to use the Left_Amiga-M combination to
    toggle between the workbench screen where the CLI window is and the
    screen created by Excellence!)

> She is using Workbench V1.2.

    Does Excellence! V2.0 require the current (V1.3) versions of KickStart
    and/or Workbench? Even if it doesn't, you might consider getting the
    V1.3 Enhancer kit, which includes significantly improved printer
    drivers. You should deal with one problem at a time, though.
2355.13Maybe a problem with the A501?CLOSUS::J_BUTLERUSAR...and ready...Fri Jan 11 1991 13:5911
    Re: .12

    Thanks!

    Her A500 is a 512KB, but has the A501 expansion to 1MB.

    I'll have her try the CLI/shell and check AVAIL.

    Maybe something is wrong with the A501?

    John B.
2355.14Problem solved...thanks!CLOSUS::J_BUTLERUSAR...and ready...Wed Jan 16 1991 19:1821
    The problem was two-fold....

    1. While the excellence! documentation strongly recommends using
       Workbench Version 1.3, a call to excellence! tech support
       revealed that Version 1.3 was REQUIRED. We were using
       version 1.2.

    Once THAT problem was fixed, we ran into Part II: Insufficient memory!

    2. A visual check of the A501 board revealed that one of the pin
       contacts was missing (just plastic where metal should be)!
       Good! It's still in warranty, so we got a replacement A501,
       and this story now has a happy ending!

    Thanks to all for the help! You got me thinking in the right
    direction!

    Regards!

2355.16Prowrite v3.1 keymap setupDUCK::NONDEPSun Jan 20 1991 11:3122
    Still haven't got the name but have a question:

    How do change the keyboard keymap on Prowrite V3.1..

    I looked into the Amiga manual but no changes: I have a french keyboard
    and a English/American version of Prowite I would like to avoid
    guessing some keys.
    This is what i have tried:
    Open system,
    Click on set map icon
                 info
                 add
    Typed KEYMAP=f
    Press return
    Click save
    Click 2 times on setmap icon when system window is up again. open
    Prowrite doc and type qwerty comes qwerty instead of azerty......

    I tried rebooting prowrite after changes same thing. Any suggestions ?

    Thanks in advance, Patrick
