2347.0. "More HW.Projects to come..." by FRAIS3::ISTURM () Fri Mar 10 1989 12:01

    While I started the HD-Adapter stuff , and after all had a little
    time to look at Note 3.xxx I found out that there is a lot of interest
    in other Hardware Projects.

    So I announce to Post drawings of the following 'Make yourself'
    electronics to this Notes-File during March....

    just depending on the time i get without forgetting to do my real
    job....

    1. Interface to put an 5 1/4"" Floppy to your Ami. as external Drive

    2. Sound Digitizer

    3. CPU Speed Regulator ( Slow down Games you otherwise won't win..
                             or even Stop to take a Picture...)

    Some more HW Specials will come later.

    Hope this meets your interest ...

    The sound digitizer sounds interesting.

    I am also interested in the sound digitizer, provided it has at least
    12 bits of resolution per sample. All the digitizers I have seen for
    the Amiga either don't say how many bits they use, or admit to being
    only 8 bits wide.

    Another aspect of data acquisition !!

    Could it be possible to build a frame grabber that could also be
    use as a sound grabber ?

    To capture images at low cost would be an eventual goal of mine!
    Can a technical person comment on that mixed hardware project ?

    I'd love the sound digitizer!!

    re:.2 Doesn't the Amiga sound chip play only 8-bit samples?

    Do those sound digitizers that cost 70$ come with everything you
    need?

2347.6Amiga = 8, TV = 12, CD = 16SAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterWed Mar 15 1989 10:186
    re: .4---Yes, the Amiga sound output is only 8 bits wide. That's why
    musical instruments sound so muddy. 8 bits is OK for sound effects,
    and barely adequate for speach, but completely inadequate for good
    music. 12 bits provides sound as good as a TV set, but audiophiles
    want 16 bits for "really good" music.

2347.716 BIT COULD BE POSSIBLEFRAIS5::ISTURMFri Mar 31 1989 08:3916
    WHILE BUSY AND OUT FOR TRAINING AND HOLIDAYS , I 'D LIKE TO DELAY
    THE OTHER HW STUFF TO SOMEWHAT IN APRIL..

    READING AND THINKING ABOUT THE 8/12/16 BIT A/D CONVERSION FOR BETTER
    SOUND , IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO CREATE A 12 OR 16 BIT ONE FOR THE
    AMI.
    AS FAR AS I AM NOW , I DONT SEE ANY HARDWARE PROBLEM , BUT THE SW
    HAS TO DO IT.
    SO IF WE CONNECT A 16 BIT A/D TO PARALLEL PORT , WE HAVE TO TAKE
    2 TIMES AN 8 BIT PART OF THE SAMPLE , SO I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE
    FREQUENCY RANGE WE CAN COVER.
    WELL , T TRY TO PUT AN HW EXAMPLE UP TO THIS NOTESFILE DURING END
    OF APRIL.

2347.8why 16 bits?AITG::WISNERPaul Wisner, ...I have a totally traditional haircut...Fri Mar 31 1989 16:213
Am I missing something? What would be the purpose of
recording 16 bit samples if they have to be played by
8 bit sound hardware??

Well, what I would like to see is a 16-bit A/D, and at least
2 16-but D/As that were DMA so I could output 44.1K samples/sec * 2 channels.
At least. And I'd also like it to be able to read a SCSI disk protocol
directly so that I could simply tell the board to read samples directly from
my disk and not bother using bandwidth on the system bus. And finally, this
should be available at least as a 2000 board.

Using the parallel port is not feasible for input bandwiths like this, e.g.,
44.1 * 2 * 2 Kbytes/sec, since it is only capable of speeds usable by the 6800
PIA-like stuff. There are slow timing restrictions, at least from what I
understand from my more hardware-oriented friends.

2347.10Some video wishesRLAV::LITTLETodd Little, NYA SWS, 323-4475Wed May 17 1989 17:015
    I too would be very interested in a frame grabber or video digitizer.
    In addition, I should think a reasonable genlock would be feasible
    given the current video chips available.
