2342.0. "printers - personal experience wanted" by FSCORE::KAYE (He who dies with the most toys is dead) Thu Mar 09 1989 12:14

I am looking at the following printers and want to know if anyone
has had personal experience with them:

    Panasonic 1124	CDN$550 (best price/performance)
    Star 2400 CDN$550
    Epson LQ850 CDN$850

These are all 24 pin dot matrix and have similar features. My main
use for this is for my 10 yr old to play with and for draft copies
of professional page (however good that is?) and some general printing.
I have Wordperfect and haven't checked if it supports the 1124 (same
    as Epson 2500 they say).

I don't know about any of the printers in .0 but I do know that
in the U.K Amstrad printers are pretty good for their price. There
are two models: 80 & 132 Column and these are around #250 to #400
(pounds). The printers are both 24 pin as is one of the Star range
which has one of the best records for a 24 pin in the U.k. I don't
actually own any of the above but I hear they are quite good for
    the money.

2342.31124 IS A GOOD ONEDAIRY::ROYThu Mar 09 1989 16:347
I have the 1124 and it is quit a printer. It does have the same
as the Epson 2500, however I have mine set for the NEC pinwriter
which it gives it better resolution for graphics. I picked mine
up at Omnitek in Salem, N.H. for $359. + $10 for the cable. If
you got the 1124 you won't be sorry.

    I guess i won't be sorry...

After calling around town for 2 days i finally got a Panasonic 1124
for $525 (the highest price was $695). I thought i had a cable,
but alas no, so i have to pick one up tomorrow and give it a whirl.
It seems to do everything but wind your watch. I'll try the NEC
    Pinwriter driver - thanx.

2342.5printer troubleFSCORE::KAYEHe who dies with the most toys is deadThu Mar 16 1989 00:119
    I'm not having much luck...

I bought a standard IBM style printer cable (Centronics to DB25)
and hooked it up, but i can't print anything. I get a requestor
saying that i have printer trouble (both from Workbench 1.3 and
WordPerfect). With the printer on, when i power up the Amiga it
does a reset and moves the head to the left margin. Any ideas?

    RE: .5

The Amiga parallel port does not use IBM cables. You must use an
Amiga cable. Also, the printer cables used with an A1000 differs
from that used with an A2000. You might want to check the pinouts
in the back of your Amiga Owner's Manual. You might be able to modify
    the cable.

I use a "ibmpc" printer cable on my A1000. Just make sure you get
a cable that will let you modify the Amiga end of it. Look in the
your Amiga Owner's Manual, disconnect any pins that have power on
them (the reason is that they should be not connected to anything
on the printer side, but as CBM has found out, not all printers
    followed that rule).

2342.8IBM printer cable works for me.VCSESU::MOORETom Moore MRO1-3/SL1 297-5224Thu Mar 16 1989 17:499
re:.5

I bought am IBM cable for my Panasonic 1092i and it works fine for me for over
a year. I had only one pin that I questioned. The +5 on the AMIGA was connected
to an input that wanted a high. Not the best logic high but OK in most cases.

See note 1088.* for a full discussion and check the printer pinout from
the manual with the AMIGA pinout.

2342.9the plot thickens & thinsFSCORE::KAYEHe who dies with the most toys is deadThu Mar 16 1989 21:3723
I took my printer and Amiga 2000 to local shop at lunch & here is
    what happened:

Hooked up printer to Amiga 500 in store - works OK
Hooked up my 2000 to printer - still doesn't work
    Reseated 8520 chip - still doesn't work
    Replaced 8520 chip - still doesn't work
The tech is now scratching his head so i decided to pull out the
2300 Genlock (the only foreign module so to speak) although he swore
it couldn't possibly be the problem - WORKS!
Put 2300 back in - still works!
Put back original 8520 - still works!

I left with him still scratching his head.

I have no idea what signal the 2300 could have been screwing up
(interrupt maybe?), but everything works fine now.

The IBM cable is fine - i checked the pinouts and noticed that the
+5 (pin 14) went to not (auto_feed_xt) - as stated earlier this
    doesn't pose any problems.
