2318.0. "Cheapest HD-Interface Available" by FRAIS5::ISTURM () Fri Mar 03 1989 10:47

Hey all you add-on and expand your Ami freaks.

Here in germany is a Mag. called C't ( Computer technik ) which
sometimes offers very interesting Hard and Software Projects.

One of the last ones ( special for Amiga ) was a cheap ( very Cheap
) Interface for Harddisks to A500/1000/2000.

So , what do they offer and what will be the cost:

    Driver Software 20 DM = 15 $

    Adapter PCB 20 DM = 15 $ ( without IC's )

    Ext.Port Adapter 20 DM = 15 $

This allows you to build you HD-IF by your own , adding 3 IC's
on the adapter PCB , adding an OMPTI 5520 MFM or 5527 RLL
Controller , Power Supply and Cover in the very Cheapest way
    I've seen Until now.

So , what I want to tell is : I ordered just an Adapter and the
Software.. ( now waiting to get it ) and I offer to post
all the Details in this Conference , which means :

    1. brief description
    2. Software driver
    3. Layout of Circuits

If are enough interests from any readers of this Notesfile i will
translate the Infos from german to english ( as good as i can do...
    )
And when i received the rest , Upload SW to WJG: Norse"":: or anybody
    who likes to get it.

As the first test in this Mag are pointing out you can design neary
every HD to use . e.g. RD 30/31/50/51/52/53 etc. etc.
The SW will allow to set Number of Heads , tracks and so on.

Still looking great , because this Mag. is the best I now.
In the past they made several Super Projects ( 68010/68020 PAK for
AtariST/Amiga ) other for the 'PeeCee' world , transputing and so
    on.

So what I woul like to now , IS There any Interest ?

    Please let me know.

    Regards Ingo

I hate to say something contrary in the face of the enthusiasm in
responses 1 through 6, but I must ask you not to post the software or
instructions if they are copyrighted. I don't know what the law is in
Germany, so I don't know if your law allows you to give away copies of
a product you have paid for. If it doesn't, please don't!

2318.8Of course no Illegal act.FRAIS3::ISTURMMon Mar 06 1989 06:0116
Well , John you are absolutely right.

At the moment I know that the hardware part is freely distributable
with the remark that it is based on ' C't Bastelei ' .
Just waiting for the Software , Im not sure if there is any Copyright
, if so i will do two things :

    1. asking the mag. for getting allowed posting it on net

    2. Or tell what are the Adresses to Order the Driver Software

So we will not get in trouble....

Regards Ingo ( Just translating all the stuff for posting ...
i think it will be here until 10.March )

Sorry Graeme this is not the answer to your question, but
I want to sustain your Question, where could I get a cheap HD interface
for RDxx disks. I already have an Trumpcard & 46mb Seagate disk.

    					Erik
    					:-)
also in the UK (near Southhampton)

I don't know about the UK, but here in the US used 2090 and 2090A
controllers are very cheap. I have seen them sold for $100 or less.

    		Steve P.

P.S. If your interested I could set-up a sale to the UK.

Use could always try a SCSI to ST506 MFM or RLL controller...

Try Third Coast Technologies (in the U.K.) 0257 472444 and ask for
Jason Miller (tell him Steve Goldstein recommended you)

Jason sells Adaptec A4000 (MFM) and A4070 (RLL) approx 50 to 75
     	U.K.pounds

    RE: .10

Get hold of MAKEHD.ZOO (or LZH...not sure what I called it) off TAPE::.

In there you will find a mountlist and construction details for an RD52
    based project.

Suggest also DIR/TITLE = CHEAP or HD or HARD etc. etc

Lots of notes on this and related subjects.

    Happy soldering.
