2089.0. "Commercial VT220 software?" by DPDMAI::MARASKY () Sat Jan 07 1989 17:53

    Does anyone know of some commercial communications software that
    supports the VT200. I am currently using Smokey on my A1000 in a
    closed in All-In-One account ans occasionally I must print a document
    to my printer. To do that I open a capture window and then after
    the document that I needed is on the disk I go through alot of
    painstaking edit functions using Word Perfect so that I can make
    it readable. This may be the backward way of doing it and if it
    is I'm open to suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

    Don

    HANDSHAKE is a shareware VT102/220 emulator that is as good a terminal
    program that I have seen. It supports XMODEM, YMODEM and KERMIT file
    transfer protocols and 80 or 132 column screens via it's own internal
    fonts.

    It should be available in several of the more popular storage areas
    such as TAPE and NORSE and WJG.

	...Speaking of Handshake (please forgive the tangent!)..
	I've been trying to transfer ASCII files using this in both
	Xmodem and Kermit modes, unsuccessfully. I've scanned previous
	notes on these topics, plus Handshake's docs, but haven't
	hit on the right setup.

	I *have* gotten the file to transfer over (using the
	'Receive Binary File' menu item - 'Receive ASCII' just
	sits there doing nothing). It's legible, but the CR/LFs
	are messed up. I've experimented with the 'Receive CR as..'
	and 'Receive LF as..' switches, to no avail. Is there a
	proven correct methodology for ASCII file transfers using
	Handshake/Xmodem?

	[I'm using the VMS Xmodem.Exe of around, I think, 90 blocks.]

	Thanks for any assistance...my brain feels fried..

2089.3try this...LEDS::ACCIARDIMan Dies Laughing - Film at 11:00Sun Jan 08 1989 01:1421

    The problem described in .2 is a real pain. I use a PD program
    called 'STRIP' to reformat any ASCII files so that a CR/LF combo
    is inserted after every line up to a width specified. STRIP blasts
    a modified copy into RAM: for uploading.

    For example, if I wanted to reformat a file, I would type

    	STRIP -W80 FILENAME

    The -W80 tells strip to reformat for 80 columns. STRIP will also
    inform you that a new version has been copied to RAM. This is a
    nice way of preserviing your original file.

    By the way, some word processors, like Scribble! and Excellence!
    have a 'print to file' option that seems to work fine for uploading
    to a VAX.

    I'll place a copy if STRIP.ARC in NORSE""::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]

    OK, STRIP.ARC has been uploaded to NORSE""::AMIGA:[UPLOAD] if you
    need it in a hurry. In the future, it should be in the UTILITIES
    directory.

    I couldn't find the docs, but if you type 'STRIP ?' from the CLI,
    you'll get very thorough online help.

    Now, back to our base note...

	..After I squeeze in a quick note of thanks, Ed! Much appreciate
	the pointers, I'm hoping to stay with Handshake.

2089.6Real "Print screen"?PEANUT::WEGERBruce WegerSun Jan 08 1989 03:0613
    re: .0 question regarding printing....

    I really miss the ability to print a screen by pressing a "print
    screen" key or printing a document by pressing "Ctrl-printscreen".

    I'd also like to be able to print the screen using what I assume
    would be a translated VT100 line-drawing character set to my Epson
    compatible printer. Just like I can on a VT102/LA50 combination.

    Do any commercial or PD Terminal Emulators support this?

2089.8An Answer--but still a problemDPDMAI::MARASKYTue Jan 10 1989 04:1810
    It sounds like handshake might do it for me> My next problem to
    overcome is that I only have a captive All-in-One account. I have
    tried but can not get files from the VAX through my system. I would
    appreciate if you know if a board anywhere in the country that I
    could dial up with Diga and download the file. If there are any
    other programs or suggestions then let me know. Thanks.....

    Try the Hobbit Hole... (904) 243-6219, down in northwest Florida.
    They usually have the latest of just about everything. I think
    you dial in and leave a request for an account, and Bilbo, the
    Sys Op, will set one up for you.

    Supports (as I am told) all speeds up to and including 9600 baud.
