1997.0. "Help with A1000 Problem needed" by GUCCI::HERB (AL) Wed Dec 14 1988 15:15

A friend of mine from outside DEC has asked me to pass on a
problem that he's having with his A100 with the hop that someone
might have some suggestions. I'll forward any replies directly to
him (which I'm sure will be appreciated).

"I have an Amiga 1000 which worked perfectly with my 1 Meg
Starboard until I added a hard disk to the system. Now I cannot
get the machine to stay up. It crashes the machine and requires a
cold start (asks for Kickstart) to get it going again. I have a
Supra 4x4 SCSI controller and a Seagate 63 Meg disk. Assuming
this was the infamous PAL chip problem, I took it in and had them
grounded according to CBM guidelines. It helped but I stoill got
occasional crashes. It degraded into a continouous problem. I
talked to Supra tech support who recommended an alternate
method using heavier wire and grounding them to the daughterboard
and to the motherboard. This was also unsuccessful. I am not sure
what to do next and would appreciate some advice before I
sink any more money into this. Is this a PAL problem? Will
replacing the PALs help? Is this a compatibility problem with the
Starboard and the Supra? Has anybody out there experienced the
same problems?"

1997.1It worked for me...LEDS::ACCIARDITime to change this damn messageWed Dec 14 1988 15:336

    I ran a Supra and a Starboard on an A1000 for a year with no problems.
    However, the system would not boot unless the Supra was the first
    device on the buss. Has your friend tried this?

    I have that combination up and running on my a1000 as well (albeit
    a 20 meg Supra). Does the system hang or crash?

    I recall in the documentation that I got with the new controller
    software (version 5.2 I think) that some drives will not work properly
    with the pseudo DMA access switch turned on.

    Just an idea..
1997.3Any more help?GUCCI::HERBALWed Jan 11 1989 09:014
    Does anyone else have any suggestions regarding the problem referenced
    in the base note?

    Thanks..AL

My supra is the first device off the bus, extra memory is after that.
No problems.

The only simple thing I can think of to ask is:

Do you ALWAYS make sure your hard drive is on BEFORE powering up
the CPU? (And does the supra card receive this power?)

Any power consumed beyond a couple meg extra memory will drain the power of the
A1000 unacceptably.

1997.5Ever resolved?DECEAT::LANDINGHAMGuy M., BXB1-1/F11,293-5297Wed Oct 18 1989 19:097
Did the original author ever get resolution here?

FWIW, my 1000 with a 1 Meg Starboard-II and CLtd. SCSI adaptor continually
crashed until I took it apart and did the PAL grounding mod _myself_ (thanks,
AZ). It's been solid as a rock since then.

Good luck...
