1971.0. "A NOVICE NEEDS HELP.." by AYOV16::GHUTCHEON () Thu Dec 08 1988 02:13

    Well I don't know if this question is to simple to answer but here
    goes.

    I've just bought a 500 and am wondering how you manage to down load
    the archived software from the VAX. ie what software and exactly where
    youhave you computer (at home via telephone or at work on a LAT line).

    Could you also advise about extra manuals as i don't find the manuals
    included all that helpfull about using the operating system from
    the CLI (or have I missed something in the book).

    thanks

1971.1it's easy...LEDS::ACCIARDITime to change this damn messageThu Dec 08 1988 02:2842

    You'll need a modem and a terminal program for the Amiga end. I
    recommend HandShake or Smokey. How do you get the terminal program
    without the modem? More on that later.

    You'll also need a version of XMODEM or KERMIT on your Vax. I use
    XMODEM exclusively, since it is quite a bit faster. You can copy
    a working version of XMODEM from

    LEDS3::USER6:[ACCIARDI.AMIGA]XMODEM.EXE

    To get XMODEM to run from the Vax end, you should define it as a
    command in your login.com file.

    Once you have connected your Amiga to your Vax via the terminal
    program, you would do the following (from the Vax end of things)

    $ XMODEM -is FILENAME.ARC

    At this point, you would select 'TRANSFER FILE' from you Amiga terminal
    program. The two XMODEMS will shake hands and begin.

    Once the file is transferred, you'll need to unpack it somehow.
    Most files are stored here in ARC or ZOO format. You'll need the
    ARC and ZOO executables on your Amiga to unpack them.

    There are a few technicalities here... XMODEM need files to be stored
    (on the Vax end) in STREAM_LF or fixed 128 byte format. If the
    file is stored in 510 byte format (which Kermit likes) or variable
    length records, then XMODEM will barf.

    To convert files from one format to another, use CVTARC.EXE, also
    located in the directory I mentioned. Define CVTARC as a command
    in your login.com, and type...

    $ CVTARC U OLDFILE NEWFILE

    I'd be glad to send you a disk containing the terminal program a d
    the needed unpacking utilities. Contact me via e-mail for details.

    Before you go to all the bother of a transatlantic disk swap....
    Give me a call (I, and about 4 or 5 other amiga owners, am in Ayr...)
    as I already have a copy of Ed's Starter disk and a whole bunch
    of other useful stuff.

    CLI manual: In the U.S., there's an AmigaDOS manual published by
    Bantam, trade paperback size with one of those plastic spines, so
    it lays flat. Be sure to get the edition that says "includes Version
    1.2" on the cover. (Is a version 1.3 edition coming out?) Depending
    on what documentation came with your machine, some features of version
    1.3 may not be covered.

    Downloading: Do a "DIR/TITLE=download" on this notesfile to read
    numerous horror stories. Seems everybody has his own personal recipe,
    arrived at by trial and error. Best way to figure it out is,
    unfortunately, get together with someone who already can download
    successfully.
