| Shadowing...
As far as I can tell, your solution is the only way. Shadowing is not
a common treatment in the "real world", and when done, is usually done in a
mechanical way simmilar to the way you describe. There are also some fonts
(not in ProPage, though) that have shadows built in. Their use is usually
confined to display advertising.
"Backgrounds"...
Yes this is done as a separate step. I suspect this was to give the
product more of a "real world" flavour. Having done it on both mechanicals
and ProPage, I can tell you that ProPage is easier and faster.
Outline...
Do you mean outlining the text, or borders around the box? If the
former, then that can be done with ease, just as you would do bold, or italics.
I'm not sure why they made this available, and shadow not. I'd put them in
the same class of novelty treatments which are usually used in adverts.
If you mean box borders, then again, I suspect the change was to give
a "real world" feel. On mechanicals, you do borders as a separate step, using
something called border tape. The 'structured graphics' tools simulate this
rather nicely, and I find adding borders as a separate step more intuitive.
If you're used to PageSetter, then I guess you'll have a bit of
adjustment to ProPage. If you're used to mechanical graphic arts, then you
should find ProPage easier to deal with.
Printers...
What printer do you have? I've been having mixed results on my
KXP-1091i.

>what printer are you using
I am using a Smith Corona DP200 with the MPS_1000 driver,working
off the parallel port.It works when I am not using Pro Page. The
support person from Gold Disk said the next version will do a very
good job with dit matrix printers.
Shadowing... I think I should have said "dropped shadow"
All mention of shadowing was to boxs not text. While playing
around last night I
1.created a box.
2.cloned it
3.adjusted the offset on the boxs
4.selected the rear box
5.selected the fill color,and pattern.
6.selected Alter active box,and clicked on the outline icon
7.selected the group boxs tool and grouped the two boxs together
This is starting to work better but I ran into problems
|------------------------|
|tis box outlined |
| filled white ____________|
| | |
|------------------------| |
|this box gray |
-------------------------|
I wanted the front box outlined but not filled, the rear box filled gray, but
every time I set outline on the front box it filled.I was in the
process of trying different combinations of active box, fill, etc
when I had to give it up to go look at some marbles. If anyone knows
the correct way to select, and fill for this type of application
it will save me many hours of experimenting.Sorry about the vague
note in .0 but I am just starting to learn both desktop publishing
and the proper vocabulary.
