1881.0. "Map of Europe" by AYOV28::ATHOMSON (C'mon, git aff! /The Kelty Clippie) Tue Nov 15 1988 12:35

    Help,
    	I'm looking for a digitised map of Europe, can anyone help ?

    Does anyone have such a thing that they can upload, or would some
    kind soul with a digitiser do it for me ??

    Anything covering Eire to Russia and Spain to Scandanavia, outline
    only, or with borders, or a straight copy of a page from an atlas
    would do - anything.....

    			Thanks in anticipation,

    I believe the CIA has a "world map", with borders, coastlines, etc.
    I'm not sure how to get it, but the VAX GKS group may know---they
    have used it for testing.

    No desperate hurry, IFF format if possible, we want to use it here
    at work as a "busy" screen for a new system, my intentions are to
    get an IFF image, load it into dpaint, put some text and logos onto
    it then move it to a vax and convert it to sixel with csix. So IFF
    at almost any resolution would be ok.

    If you're looking for map databases, look in the Graphics notesfile
    (QUEEN::GRAPHICS) or the Sight notesfile (VWSENG::SIGHT).

1881.6New equipment needed ... CESARE::ZABOTMarco Zabot-Adv.Tech.mgr-Turin ACTMon Nov 21 1988 07:4328
    Well, here is the status.
    I've tried immediately to digitize a map , but the resuls was
    horrible. ( i was usig AmigaEye and a color TV camera).

    Next day I went to get a B&W camera from hitachi, which is suppose
    to do a terrific job. I also got an EasyView who should be better
    than AmigaEye. I've not had the chances to start using it because
    at the same time I also swapped my A2000-German made (mod. A) with
    a new A2000B. Being my sistem fully loaded it took a long to do
    the job, specially since Commodore had the brilliant idea to modify
    the way connector and ROMs are inserted in the two models!

    Anyway, another problem that I had at the very beginning has been
    the in my may ( one of those attached to In-Air Magazine ) Europe
    is a lot longer that wide. So here is another question :

    Do you want it squeezed to fill a page (distance between Stkolm
    and Rome may become smaller that Galway to Berlin ) or you want
    it more natural, even if this imply a black band on each side of
    the picture ?

    Or you do prefere it in various pieces with more details and the
    you provide to sew ther together ??
    marco.
    PS. DON'T PANIC. I got all that stuff for doing your pictures, but
    	I'm not going to pay for it !! It's really nice to have a friend
    	like Beppe, don;t you think !!!

1881.7ThanksAYOV28::ATHOMSONC'mon, git aff! /The Kelty ClippieMon Nov 21 1988 09:3611
    Marco,
    	Many thanks, (I think you're VERY lucky to have a friend like
    Beppe). If its not too much bother would it be possible to have
    both formats (I feel guilty asking...) that is the natural but smaller
    image and the full screen but squashed one then I can try both and
    see which one comes out best.

    			Thanks again,
    					Alan T.

    Alan,
    	I uploaded Euro.arc to cgou01::anmew:euro.arc.  It contains
    a digitized satellite view of the area you wanted.

    	The pic is in black & white and just a little bit fuzzy. But
    give it a try anyway as it might be a good starting point.

    	Let me know how it goes.

    Sorry it took lo long. And the quality is not too good either.
    Thelaking of a good map to start from has also been a problem.
    Anyway, if you want to give a look at it , it's in:
