1845.0. "Desparately need help with UUENCODE" by RAVEN1::EVERHART () Wed Nov 02 1988 19:07

    	Not too long ago, I posted a request for help with UUENCODE.
    I don't have any problem making the program run, but for some reason,
    all of the versions I have tried munge the code at the end. I am
    running UUENCODE on VMS. It runs fine, but yields a non-standard
    record type. Then, when I mail the code to another computer, and
    try to decode it, I get the error "short file." And, parts of the
    code are twisted around. The mailing is definitely not the problem
    since ZOO2.00, which was already encoded worked just fine through
    the mail. Can anyone out there supply me with a VMS UUENCODE that
    definitely works, or figure out what I am doing wrong? Perhaps
    I need to set something in the terminal characteristic, although
    I doubt that. This really puzzles me, and I have lots of stuff
    I'd like to mail to my Clemson account for downloading. (Long distance
    to download from here) Thanks in advance for any help.

    I don't have a working version of UUENCODE, but I can guess what
    the problem is. Probably the UUENCODE you've got is not setting
    the record attributes of its output file correctly for VMS. It
    should be setting the attributes to variable length records,
    CR carriage control.

    Look for blank lines in the middle of the uuencoded file. The only
    blank line allowed is just before the 'end' line, and that's not
    always there.
1845.4Works for me!LOWLIF::DAVISThat's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!Thu Nov 03 1988 13:065
It works fine for me. You can grab my copies of UUEN/DECODE from:

1845.5What happened to .1??RAVEN1::EVERHARTThu Nov 03 1988 20:107
    I've checked everything except the suggestion in .4. I am going
    to take a "matched set of UUENCODE/UUDECODE" from MDKCSW and see
    if I can make it work. Perhaps my UUDECODE is a buggy or old version??
    If this doesn't work, I'll come back for more help.

    FINALLY! I have solved the problem! My version of UUDECODE was
    apparently VERY old, and was unable to handle some of the quirks
    about mail posting. I now have a new version, and I have so far
    decoded 3 things I was not able to decode before. I want to thank
    everyone for their suggestions in this. THANKS!
