1775.0. "Caught in All-in-1" by DPDMAI::MARASKY () Fri Oct 14 1988 01:42

    Help!!

    I am a remote engineer that is in the farthest confines of west
    texas that calls in with my ami 1000 into a captive All-in-1 account
    that is loacted in Dallas. I am so remote that the site I am on
    has alot of DEC systems but the Air Force does not allow them to
    communicate with the outside world. Problem is that there are alot
    of good programs that are on systems that I have no idea how to
    get them off. I do not have a DCL account!!! Am I confined to
    sit behind my screen dreul at the thought of upgrading my Smokey
    file or is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

    Thanks...
    Don

1775.1Have you talked to your DIS folks?RBW::WICKERTMAA DIS ConsultantFri Oct 14 1988 02:2610

    Have you called your local DIS folks? I can only speak for my own
    area but we'd be willing to help out one of our customers (ie you
    guys) if you had a good reason.

    I know it's tough to know the right people to talk to but don't
    take the first no. At least half the people in our area DIS would
    say no the first time - you really need to find the right person.

1775.2I am in the ame boatDPDMAI::ANDERSONASun Oct 23 1988 15:2710

    I am on the same system you are on. From DT (Document Transfer)
    you can run kermit. This is all you can do. Please don't get caught
    Bogging! down the system during the day. Besides it makes 2:00
    A.M. PM's a lot more pleasant. We used to have a lot more privellages
    but they took them away from us about a year ago. About half of the
    programs on the net cannot be downloaded with Kermit but it is better
    than nothing. If you want more detailed information call me.

    re: about half of the programs cannot be downloaded with Kermit...

    ??? with CVTARC you should be able to convert those programs to
    a RMS file type that Kermit likes:

    CVTARC U arcfile for use with kermit> SET FILE TYPE BLOCK
    CVTARC U arcfile for use with kermit> SET FILE TYPE FIXED

1775.4Captive environment is rather restrictive...BOMBE::MOOREWhere do you go when you're Toad Away?Mon Oct 24 1988 21:562
    I think the gist of .2 is that they don't have access to DCL, so they
    can't run CVTARC, etc.

    re:.4

    hmmm.. with SET FILE TYPE BLOCK kermit should be able to handle
    STREAM_LF files. With SET FILE TYPE FIXED kermit should be able
    to handle fixed length 510 byte files. No need to run CVTARC for
    those files.

    can kermit handle fixed length 128 bytes files? I guess my question
    is what file formats in the pd directories can't kermit handle?
    If there is any, perhaps the files in the pd directories should
    be converted to something kermit can use, it would make life easier
    for captive account users and new users.

1775.6Call me... we'll do lunch. :-) DIXIE1::MCDONALDSurly to bed, surly to rise...Thu Oct 27 1988 17:178
    RE: .0

    I'm in about the same situation as you, only I have access to DCL
    after hours or on another machine. Give me a call at (904) 882-5665
    during the day (7:30 - 4:30 Central Standard Time). I think we
    might be able to work something out.

1775.7Try thisDPDMAI::ANDERSONASat Nov 05 1988 01:3621
    I managed to down load some Stream_lf files using poly com from
    All-In-One to a rainbow. Then Xmodem from a rainbow to the Amiga.

    From the DT menu run polycom

    from the Rainbow run XFR
    then XFR>tofile/b from Fromfile/im

    the /b must be on the MSDOS file side and the /IM must be on the
    VMS file side.

    I was able to down load Jessica.arc and the new la50 driver this
    way.

    Of course you must have copied the file over to your all-in-one
    account. Isn't it strange that we can copy from all over the network
    yet we can't use DCL. I'll never figure that logic out!!

    -0 call me or send me mail if you want more info.

1775.8What Rainbow??DPDMAI::MARASKYSun Nov 06 1988 03:466
    I'm not sure the meaning of the use of the rainbow. The only access
    to the outside world of VAX that I have is through the AMI. It's
    hell being a remote onsite in the middle of nowhere Tx.
