1738.0. "MODEM RECOMENDATIONS?" by FIZBIN::MARI (Lee Mari) Tue Oct 04 1988 00:11

    A friend is planning to buy a modem for his 500. Unfortunately
    he is not a DEC employee and cannot benefit from the employee price
    of DEC modems.

    Any suggestions for 1200 and/or 2400 bd modems?

    Any thoughts about important features?

    		Thanks for your help.

    Look in Computer Shopper. There are TONs of 2400 baud modems.
    Average price $170. A name I remember as good is Supra.

          I bought a 2400 baud supra modem, and paid $140 for it new,
     and havent had any problems with it. In case it matters, it is
     Hayes compatible.

If you're willing to settle for 300/1200 baud, The Memory Location in Wellesley
has the Amiga Modem on sale for $75. I bought one for my son about a week or two
ago. The "list" is somewhere around $190 and they normally sell it for about
$149.

    hohoho hahahahaha .... DEC charges us $395 for a DF242 2400 baud
    modem, plus an additional fee for a service contract!

    The best of this type of modem around is called a

    Multitech 224 EC

    They are relatively cheap, provide extended Hayes compatibility
    2400, 1200, 0-300 Baud. The best part is if your other-end modems
    support it, you can use the RELIABLE mode (error correcting) (that's
    what the E stands for) and COMPRESSED mode (effectively getting
    you 4800 Baud). DEC provided me with a 224E that will shortly be
    upgraded to a 224EC (rom change) and CXO and CXN have 224ECs for
    their dialin. COmpuserve also supports teh error correcting mode,
    I believe.

1738.6Another vote for SupraNEXUS::D_WHITEUncle DaveThu Oct 06 1988 05:3010
    I would second the recommendation for the Supra modem. I bought
    mine for $140 mail order and it has been great. I just about choke
    when I have to do anything at 1200 baud. The unit is very compact
    and clean looking, easy to operate and loaded with features -- it
    fits very nicely under my printer stand. The additional money spent
    to be able to do stuff at 2400 baud is well worth it in my opinion.
    It's hard enough to keep up with all of the new uploads at that
    speed!
