1720.0. "UNSHAR?" by AYOV10::ATHOMSON (C'mon, git aff! /The Kelty Clippie) Mon Sep 26 1988 11:08

    Can anyone help ? There was a list of PD disks in usenet this morning
    but it was in SHAR format (cut here etc.). I have SHAR.EXE but I
    can't seem to 'unpack' the shar file with it.... Do I need an UNSHAR
    program (for VMS please) ? Is there one on the net ? or do I need
    to shar -u foo.bar and then use a uudecode program ? Does this exist
    on the net ?

    				Cheers,

You need to make a foreign command for SHAR.EXE :

	$ shar :== $dev:[directory]shar

Don't forget the '$'. dev: is the device (ex. USER1:) and [directory] is the
directory path (ex. [GUINEAU.AMIGA])

for ex:    shar :== $user1:[guineau.amiga]shar

then $ shar -u archive_file_name should unpack it. Make sure you delete
anything above the "cut-here" line in the shar archive file.

    Yes. The PD/Shareware listing posted looks like it needs
    SHAR -u filename followed by uudecoding of the specific files
    it creates. Also, I noticed that the document said it was posting
    3 of 5. Some of the postings may need to be concatenated prior to
    running SHAR.

    re: .1 I did all that John, but I ended up with an (apparently)
    uuencoded file minus all the shar stuff at the beginning and end.

    re: .2 Thanks, I thought that's what I might have to do, does anyone
    have uudecode for VMS anywhere ?

    It's in ANT::LIB1:[SMCAFEE.PUBLIC]uudecode.*

    But, I originally got it from Dave Wecker's account (thanks dave).

    Well, I got everything, assigned everything, ran everything and
    I get a message "No begin line" from uudecode. I am assuming then
    that the file is one of a series and should be concatenated with
    other files before decoding. (presumably the first file would have
    the "begin line" included). I looked at uudecode.c and apparently
    it's looking for an 'end/n' as well, and I don't have that either.

    You are right. In spreading out a large file over various postings,
    you must get them all and concatenate. Your first line will
    be:

    begin #ofbytes? filename

    your last line will be

    end

    	Good luck.

      John Kjellman sent me the missing parts of his 5-part posting
    via E-mail. The complete listing of Fish Disks and the other public
    domain disks he is offering can be copied from:

    		NAC::USER$12:[PLOUFF.PUBLIC.AMIGA]PD-DISKS.ARC

    for the next week or so. Can someone offer this file a permanent home?

    For what it's worth, the Fish disk listings, which are the bulk
    of the posting, are described better in note 12xx.*, titled something
    like "Fish Disks 1-Latest."
