1704.0. "How to make opening windows smarter.." by HPSTEK::SENNA () Tue Sep 20 1988 10:53

I get tired of opening up workbench windows so I can view the icons
available. In some cases I have to make the window bigger first
to see what in there. Is there a way for me to make workbench open
a bigger window and have the icons in a better arangement for me
to seee them? Better yet, can I have it smart enough so that the
windows adjust to the number and arangement of icons automatically?
Not a big deal but certainly anoying!

    			Thanks, Tom

Maybe I misunderstood your question, but it sounds like an easy
    one...

First, open your window and arrange the position and size that you'd
like. Then, single click it's disk or drawer icon. Then select
'cleanup' from the Workbench menu. This will cause Intuition to
fit all the icons in a nice neat manner.

To save these positions, you must shift-single click on first the
drawer or disk icon and then all the icons in the window. You can
highlight icons that have scrolled beyond the window's borders by
using the window slider gadgets. Now select 'snapshot' from the
Workbench menu. This will write a new disk.info file to disk, which
will contain the size and cordinates of the window and the relative
loactions of all the icons contained in it.

I don't know any way to make a window 'smart' as you suggested.

for once...I think I can top ed...it seems as if the icon position
can be reset to 0,0 (I have a program...I'll package an acr file
and up load) then when WB goes to display, it packs them into the
open space, just like a clean-up...I use this on my HD a lot...position
some of them, but leave most of the drawers "floating"...

forgot to add...you still have to adjust the size/position of the
window, but it make positioning the icons in it automatic...

    watch this space...for upload info...
1704.5Disk & Drawer control the windowTLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersTue Sep 20 1988 22:379
Re: .1

To add a little emphasis to what Ed said: When you Snapshot a disk or
drawer icon, the size and placement of its window will be saved if the
window is currently opened.

If you wanted to set the size of the window but leave the icons stored
within it a jumbled mess, simply snapshot the disk or drawer without
snapshoting the contents.

Thats why resetting the location to zero (or unknown) is such a
blessing...ie the WB puts them into a "neat" arrangement...
