1687.0. "PCPATCH needed" by FRA04::KRAMER (Murphy was an optimist..) Wed Sep 14 1988 19:37

Can anybody point me to a location in Easynet where I can find

	'PCPATCH' ???

- or can anybody even upload it??

(It patches the PCUTIL programs so that they would handle a 3.5" as
an 5.25" disk - according to the description I have)

BTW: a SECTORAMA version which can deal with multiple HD partitions
is uploaded to WJG::AMIGA:SECTOR_HD (executable only).

An archive which contains this program, sec.doc and the disk.tutorial
is in FRSTSC::CRANS2$USER:[KRAMER.RD_TOOLS]SECTOR_HD.ARC.

I snatched the PcPatch from swan.ulowell.edu (ftp), compiled it with Lattice
4.01, and it worked great. I just finished copying 'downloading?' a very
large backlog of amiga stuff, and it worked without any problem. I used
the 360k format on the 3.5" disks. A bit of a waste, but it's much better
than spending $55.00 for Dos-to-Dos... (besides, we already knew that
IBMs were wasteful ;-)

I'll be happy to provide the uuencoded executeables to the needy...

Did anybody find/get PcPatch? I sent mail to Don, no response.

I finally found the autor of PCPATCH (located in Heidelberg, Germ.
some 30 miles from my place).

He already send me the binaries - sources will follow.

Binaries (not tested) are available in

FRSTSC(50836)::CRANS2$USER:[KRAMER.RD_TOOLS]PCPATCH.UUE

BTW: to the moderators of the various Amiga PD collections:
is there a way to upload files, to a specific 'upload' directory?

PS: Pcpatch patches the PCUTIL of 1.2 EXTRA disk, according to
the author's note.

PPS: This guy wrote also the Xoper program (should be known to
the subscribers of comp.sys(.binaries/.sources).amiga newsgroup).
The current version (so he told me) has a bug in the 'cancel' routine,
an updated version will come in about a week.

many thanks for getting/uploading it. Interesting... sounds like
the PCUtils don't know how to handle 720K, they only know about
    360K floppies.

The following is the README from the uudecoded arc file.

                               PcPatch 3.5"

Along with this file you should find two programs called 'PcC3.5' and
'PcF3.5'. They are made to patch PCCopy and PCFormat respectively from
the 'EXTRAS 1.2' disk, to allow reading/writing/formatting 3.5 inch 360k
(2 sides/40 Tracks/9 sectors) MS-DOS disks. In order to make the programs
work, put PcC3.5 and PCCopy, PcF3.5 and PCFormat into the same directory.
Patches are always applied in memory and not on disk, so you may copy them
directly into the Extras:PCUtil directory.

3.5"/360K is not a standard MS-DOS format, but every PC with a 3.5" drive
will read and write them, but may not format them, depending on the DOS
version and the installed driver. If you need to format a disk in a PCCopy-
readable manner on a PC, you have to boot with DOS 2.xx. On some machines
you have just to remove the corresponding driver from 'config.sys'.

These patches do not add any new features to the programs, but they just
remove all those checks PCCopy and PCFormat do to ensure that the drive is
a 5.25" drive and that the drive is unavaiable to dos.

Hope you find this program useful,

-Werner Guenther G35@DHDURZ2.BITNET

Re: .-1

I made the same experience, 720k will not be read.
170k (single sided floppies): the directory is read correctly,
PCcopy doesn't complain when copying but out comes garbage!

On a friend's machine I tried with Dos-to-dos:
but even Dos-to-dos can handle the 170k floppies if they are not
mounted by Amigados, maybe PCutils have the same problem.

-- My intentions to use 170k comes from the possibility to write
them on my office Rainbow, so transfering stuff to Ami is fairly easy.
If I couldn't manage to use the PCutils directly I must insert
another step: copy the 170k under Transformer to 360k and PCcopy then....

BTW: I only have PCutil from 1.3 Extra, so there's obviously
no difference between 1.2 and 1.3.
