1685.0. "Letter printer & word prefect ?" by CAMONE::ARENDT (DDT - The first and still the best) Tue Sep 13 1988 17:11

    Howdy,

I have an AMIGA 2000 and am thinking of purchasing word perfect. What
I am wondering about is if anyone out there is using this package in
interlace mode and with a daisy wheel letter quality printer. At $99.00
wordperfect seems like a good deal but I need to know if it will work
in interlace mode and if it can drive an inexpensive yet reliable letter
quality printer as I cannot afford a laser printer.

In summary I want info about word perfect and any letter quality printers
available. I now use an Epson RX-80 and would be interested in the interaction
of word perfect and it.

I have WordPerfect in interlace mode. Unless you have flicker fixer
    - Its' not worth it. I drive my Panasonic from preferences using
the Epson jx 80 driver. WordPerfect is much better and can drive
near letter quality using its' own drivers which are more diverse
    than AmigaDos 1.2.

So... If you want fast/quick/cheap, pick two. If you want a good
answer to your question... Call WordPerfect directly. They are
known for good support, even if don't already own wordperfect.

P.s. Read the AmigaWorld review of 24 pin printers, they can be
driven upwards to 300 DPI with special software. That
approaches a LN03. Incidently, low cost printers can be
can be improved with some font packages for Low end printers.
If you wish a incomplete list supported by SuperFont- Send
me mail and I'll return a list.

P.s. I suspect V1.3 of AmigaDOS will upgrade all printers - but
when (November maybe) can't be determined.

Actually, its a matter of opinion! I don't have flicker fixer
on my 500/1080 combo and I use interlace mode in everything I do!
It may get anoying at times when there a sharp contrast between
colors but colors are adjustable! I'd much rather have more text
in a screen....but again its really a matter of PREFERENCE 8^)

    I agree if you can....

    (1) get high persistance monochrome (See note 1670)
    (2) get a whole page onto forty-plus line (set margins for top and
    bottom big)
    (3) reset the color and turn down contrast and brightness
    (4) Have giant screen (vscreen) and get two copies of wordperfect
running with one being the top half and the other the bottom
half. Merge when done (This is blue sky - haven't done it)
    (5) Use multicolumn feature and have two columns for side by side
editing then a macro to print pages sequentially (Blue sky)
    (6) See if new chips can rid 500/200 of interlace?

I also use interlace on my 500/1080.

Never used to, but then Ed gave me a disk with interlace and some good colors
(well, levels of grey) and I realized it was all a matter of tweeking. I added
color for detail and border which spice up the grey a bit without alot of
flicker. Hey Ed, I even kept that mouse pointer design - no trouble finding
that on a crowded screen!

interlace make it a whole new (and significantly better) machine. Can't wait
for the new chips...

1685.5Not concerned with how to get flicker freeCAMONE::ARENDTDDT - The first and still the bestWed Sep 14 1988 04:0016

    Howdy,

I am at this time less concerned with the technical aspects of how
to achieve a flicker free interlaced environment than I am in how
word perfect handles the concept of 80+ columns of information.
This is because I hope to overcome this problem with the hardware
which I discussed in note 1670, which has not yet arrived but I
still plan on reporting on. If this works, in combination with
a monochrome monitor, I should have a high res flicker free
monochrome display. What I want to know is how will I be able to
take advantage of this with word perfect.

    Thank You For Your Support

1685.6How good will WP drive Epson RX-80 ?CAMONE::ARENDTDDT - The first and still the bestWed Sep 14 1988 04:0612
    Howdy again,

Also my Epson Rx-80 has many fancy features which I have never been
able to take avantage of (ie double strike, subscript, super script,
underlineing and near-letter quality. Will word perfect use these
features automatically. What I mean is given a good package to
drive my printer will I need a letter quality anyway?

    Thanks

I have WordPerfect and everyone in the family uses it including my nine
year old. I bought it because I feel it has a lot of features, the kids
may be able to use what they have learned on some other machine, and I hear
they have good support.

I tried 90 columns the other night just to see how wide the display was.
The display scrolls left and right to keep you in the window. I don't know
what the limit is. The display seems to be 77 columns wide.

As for printers, they invested a lot of effort in providing support for
almost any printer except mine a Panasonic 1092i. I think I use one of the
Epson drivers. If you want to customize a driver to your printer you start
with one that is close and make modifications from there. Be prepared to
answer a lot of questions you may not know the answer to. I don't find it
convient to change fonts through the user interface. You have to go
through a menu. I'm sure you could probably use a macro or something but I
just push the button on the printer when I want it to look better.

I have several complaints about their user interface but it's reliable and
has all the features I require including spelling. We also like being able
to queue several files to the printer while we are still working. It will
also print portions of your text. If you mess up the last page you don't
have to print the whole thing to get what you want. It also has a nice way
to lookup files without icons. It has a teaching disk too.

Hope this helps.

1685.8Sys-configs 'r usLEDS::ACCIARDIHeisenberg may have slept hereWed Sep 14 1988 12:0318

I thought of doing this before, but never got around to it..

How about people posting their System-Configuration files? That
way, you could see what works best for different tastes. You may
even find a color arangement that works better that the one that
    you spent 6 months perfecting.

After three years of Amiga use (I've owned one exactly as long as
it was possible to own one) I've found the best arrangement for
me is a Mac-like color scheme; ie, 4 shades of grey. By setting
all four color registers at or near similar positions, you can get
a livable interlaced Workbench without objectionable flicker.

I also have a custom made flourescent red mouse pointer that's
    impossible to miss.

My color? GREEN with envy!

1685.10WordPerfect & Epson RX-80LOWLIF::DAVISThat's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!Thu Sep 15 1988 00:0112
I just got my copy of WordPerfect last week and have been using it quite
nicely with my Epson RX-80. It handles the bold, underline, super and sub
scripts that you mentioned automatically. To get it to switch to enhanced
mode, you have to use WordPerfect's "PRINTER COMMAND" option. Essentially,
it allows you to send any 'ol escape sequence you want to the printer at
any point in the document. That makes emphasized (kinda NLQ) mode as easy
as typing in <27>E.

From what I see so far, WordPerfect is great. Using it on the Amiga is
probably nicer than on a PC. The pull-down menus come in handy at times!
