1618.0. "TOW ?" by HSK03::HEISKANEN () Mon Aug 22 1988 18:42

A magazine from Sweden(DATOR) tells:

The world's oldest(1521) regiment Svea Livgarde(swedish lifeguards)
has bought AMIGA 2000 with AT board.
In the real life they have a system called ROBOT 56 that is used
against tanks.

Now they have bought AMIGA and simulation software called TOW.
TOW comes from the USA.
Svea Livgarde is very pleased about the system. That is because they
had very hard demands on the graphics and they feel that AMIGA fulfils them.
On the other hand they say that the effect of the system can be seen
on guys when they for the firts time use ROBOT 56. No hesitation at all.

The dream seems to be to place AMIGA inside a JEEP and have it
painted green.

So what is this TOW ? Does it need AT board ?

1618.1sounds like a missle to meBAGELS::BRANNONDave BrannonMon Aug 22 1988 22:2914
    I think TOW is a wire-guided missle/launcher that is used to blow
    holes in tanks and other large objects. The drawback was that
    you have to be standing somewhere in a direct line to the target
    (i.e., if you can see him, he can potentially see you).

    Maybe somebody wrote some control or simulation software for the
    IBM pc. And somebody else "justified" getting an Amiga with an AT board
    because it could run that software (and do lots of other fun things).

    Seems like a good reason to get an Amiga to me :-) Does CBM sell
    Tempest versions of the Amiga 500/2000? (special version designed
    to survive under combat conditions)

My understanding of Tempest was not that it would withstand combat
conditions, but rather, you not could glean information out of it by
pointing an antenna at it and reading out the contents of the CRT display
from it's electromagnetic emissions. It's somewhat stricter than FCC
class B.

The guys in the tank will know soon enough that a missle is about to
hit them, so painting it green to match the trees (since you have to
have a direct line to your target) might be adequete for such an
application.

    re: .2

    You need to paint the Amiga green so that you can hide it in the
    jeep. Of course it might help to have some trees to hide the jeep
    in :-)

    You need to hide the fact that you are using an Amiga with an AT
    bridgeboard - the folks in the tank are probably using mere pc clones.

    A camouflage-colored Amiga might find a civilian market among war
    game enthusiasts and survivalist groups. CBM could charge the
    Department of Defense extra for the paint job - maybe ten or twenty
    times their current list prices. And Amigas would turn up in war
    surplus stores next to mess kits and folding shovels.
