1593.0. "Flicker Woes" by HYSTER::DEARBORN (Trouvez Mieux) Fri Aug 12 1988 15:27

I own an A1000. I have been doing a lot of work in Hi-Res, and
am getting tired of watching Hi-Res flicker. Buying a 2000,
flickerfixer and a multi-sync monitor are far too expensive.

Can anyone recommend a monochrome long-persistance monitor? This
seems to be the cheap way around the problem (that's why Commodore
put the monochrome output on the 500 and 2000.) Is it possible
to have both the monochrome monitor and my Sony KV1311 connected
at the same time? I hate swapping cables.

Any ideas? Sunglasses and screen tinting are out. I want Hi-Res
    B+W without the flicker.

1593.1A500/A1000 FlickerFixer soon?LEDS::ACCIARDIHeisenberg may have slept hereFri Aug 12 1988 15:5715

If you can sit tight a littlel longer, the FlickerFixer is available
for the A500/A1000 in the UK, and should be here soon.

I know this from speaking with a fellow who travels to the UK.
The UK price was 230# (I don't know what today's exchange rate is).

You'll still need a multisync monitor, but it's cheaper than upgrading
    to an A2000 w/FlickerFixer.

If you remind me (via e-mail) I'll post MicroWay's phone number
here so that you can call them and bug them.

Read Note 1056. The company is real (I have their mouse recorder
Software). I'll go in with you and buy one too if we can share
    experiences.

Well, I went out and bought a TAXAN Amber Composite monitor from
the Memory Location for $120. It works pretty well. It looked
great with the monochrome output from a 500. I've altered my palette
to be monochrome, this eliminates the color noise associated with
color output on a monochrome display.

The results are not perfect, but a vast improvement over the old
way, and for a reasonable price.

Well indeed! You must have been the guy walking out with the LAST
amber monitor in stock last Saturday! I was returning my "less than
perfect" green to replace it with a amber one. I ended up with
another green one, but virtually perfect. The original was purchased
last Friday.

Problem with the original? The deflection yoke was several
degrees rotated and the left side of the screen would not focus.

I agree the Taxan is just the ticket for high-res monochrome, but
the ghosting from the long persistence phosphor is slightly annoying.

Oh well, I guess I have to try again. The amber monitor is NOT
long-persistance. They claim that only the green one is. Well,
I guess it's time for a trip back to the shop.

I guess you saved yourself another trip...

Funny?!? I'm sure they told me they both were long persistence.
Sometimes bad luck is good luck, I guess!

They also only had the green monitor I turned in left. Beware of
the crooked deflection yoke and check out the left side of the screen
for sharpness too. They said the sharpness was a "cockpit error"
between using the horizontal position and preferences for centering
the screen. Funny the same problem has not shown up on the
replacement one at all and I have not changed preferences.

I suspect the actual problem is a misaligned yoke about the
vertical axis as well as rotated.

	Good Luck!

1593.9good news, bad newsHYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxWed Aug 17 1988 23:5712
Well, I traded in the monitor for a green one. Professional Page
is now a delight to work with. I can set my VT200 Emulator for
    48 lines withour flicker.

The only problem is that the monitor just went bad a few seconds
ago...vertical hold out of control. Well, it looks like ANOTHER
trip back to the shop. Anyone interested in buying a house in New
Hampshire? I'm thinking about moving to Wellsley to cut down on
    all this travel...
