1506.0. "Zoom!" by STAR::BANKS (In Search of Mediocrity) Fri Jul 01 1988 15:17

Ok, I know this is a stupid game, but I just picked up a copy of
"Zoom!" by discovery software. Generally cute, especially given
my presumably built-in genderic bias against shoot-em-ups. You
may have seen this game advertised next to Arkanoid in the Amiga
    rags recently.

You drive a little smiling bowling ball shaped character around
a grid (on top of the lines) with your object being to box off all
the squares (turning them a different color to show them as captured),
all the while being chased by an assortment of baddies. This goes
on until you get killed, bored, or break the joystick.

Only thing I can't figure is what the heck those blue "angleheads"
are supposed to do. I can seem to run over them with little observed
harm, and I don't see them doing anything untoward in my direction.

    Anyone got any clues?

Gee, Dawn, I always say this would be a better world if more women packed
weapons. You should try an expand your horizons and experiment with
mindless acts of senseless violence.

Well, I do always get a big charge out of catching the red "L" pill
in Arkanoid, and subsequently phasering the crap out of all the
bricks, but that may well be more due to frustration rather than
a predisposition for death and destruction emulators.

Zoom only lets you run over things? No shooting, stomping, blasting,
etc.? Does it have some socially or morally redeeming value?

At least it uses a joystick instead of a quiche-eating rodent.

Sigh... the graphics looked good in the ad, it looked a little like
a fancy version of QIX. I've always wanted to blast the QIX critters
into the next galaxy after a few games.

Well, it does let you drop little "bombs" in the path behind you.
They temporarily crater the path, impeding any object's progress
(including yours if you come back that way).

The only baddies you can make go away are the blue angleheads, and
that's done so by running over them. That's the point of my question,
though, because I can find no apparent use for them other than getting
    run over.

On the subject of quiche eating rodent interfaces: Who ever dreamt
up the idea that the only way to control the paddle in Arkanoid
is via rodent should, this very moment, be forced to urinate into
little plastic cups under police supervision. I mean, after going
to so much trouble to make the game play like the arcade version,
they should have at the very least made an optional paddle controller
interface. Instead, they give us mice. Rats! Now, all the skills
I pick up with the home version are irrelevant when I'm spending
real quarters. (The main skill being constantly correcting for
rodent drift in the X axis during every free moment.)

I saw/bought Zoom at the Memory Location on Saturday. Very addictive.
Forget that comparison to QIX. Nice graphics & sound, uses joystick.
Even has a competitive 2 player mode.

Another copy sold. Ok, has anybody been able to make a backup? No, of course
not. I don't think I should have to pay $9 to get a backup from DSI. Oh well.

My main question is this: does it keep the motor running in df0: when you
play it? My light stays on the entire time Zoom is booted. (I have the same
problem when I boot Barbarian) Is this "expected behavior?"

I don't think my motor runs at all when I play the game (I usually
notice when it comes on and goes off).

To address my original question: I finally figger'd out what those
blue angleheads do: Run over one and you slow down (a lot).

Here's a neat little tidbit that I accidently stumbled onto: When ZOOM is at
the point where you are selected the level to start at, press F10 and poof!,
you can now get up to level 30 instead of just 10.

Ok, ok, I admit that I WAS just pushing buttons...
