1483.0. "Return to Atlantis" by USAT05::KASPER (Life is like a beanstalk, isn't it...) Sat Jun 18 1988 02:08

Has anybody gotten very far with _Return_to_Atlantis_ (Electronic Arts).
I can't get past the fourth episode! Any hints out there?

1483.1Peek under the hood... 8) BOMBE::MOOREWhere do you go when you're Toad Away?Sat Jun 18 1988 04:038
    Look on the second disk. There should be a couple of files with
    names ending in ".MSG". Type (or print) these files and you'll
    probably get all the hints you need. (They contain the text for
    messages from ART along with some comments describing the circumstances
    where each would appear.)

    There's also a .DOC file that appears to be a working draft of scenario
    outlines used by the developer(s)...
1483.2GOOD GAME?REGENT::DITTMERSat Jun 18 1988 15:054
    Is this game any good? I've heard alot about it going both ways.
    Could you tell me a little about it?

1483.3Thanks for the info.USAT05::KASPERLife is like a beanstalk, isn't it...Mon Jun 20 1988 01:1517
RE: .1

Thanks! I'll give them a try.

RE: .2

I think it's pretty good. I haven' played too many 'adventure' type
games but from what I've seen so far it could be interesting.

There are 14 episodes. In each one you have some underwater tasks to
complete (missions to 'save the world'). Once underwater there's alot
to keep track of. You also have five characters that you can question
for info, but I haven't found them to be too helpful.

I'll let you know more after I try out the hints in reply.

1483.4The fourth one is difficultCLT::UTZMon Jun 20 1988 13:1637
    Yes, the fourth adventure is a difficult one. I have ruined two
    characters trying this one over and over again.

    First a short description of the game and then I'll give some hints
    on adventure.

    The game is an underwater set of missions. You control a diver
    in real time as he swims about trying to complete his mission.
    The missions usually involve locating something that has been lost
    underwater and beaming it up to your vessels. Then you need to
    find the correct location and beam it back down. The sequence of
    moves to beam something down is very complicated. I always have
    to pause the game <esc> and reread the manual to get all the steps
    straight. Then just to make thins a little more interesting, there
    are the crabbots. These are crabs that drop little depth charges
    on top of you. I have found it next to impossible to hit one with
    my pistol. I just avoid them if at all possible....

    fourth adventure... possible spoiler.

    The objective is to find three packages of medicine and deliver
    them to the Aquacity. The first step is to do a scan. I usually
    find three groups of green dots. The furthest one away is usually
    Aquacity and I send RUF there to verify that. The dots most spread
    out are usually the medicine. The problem comes in that there are
    many more packages than three. Most of them are poisonous. I have
    found a toxicity meter to be essential. However, it is not the
    easiest to use. Remember that if the meter is not pointing in a
    given direction to check the tool belt because it may indicate you
    are right on top of the poison. I have also found that a current
    meter is helpful. The current seems to be real strong in the Med.
    Finally, if you don't have a radio transmitter then you need to
    find the radio beacon. It is usually in the same area as the packages.

    So, I would not start this adventure unless you have a current meter
    and a toxicity meter. (I have found the toxicity meter on adventure
    3). A radio transmitter is also helpful.
