1435.0. "C-LIGHT ???" by TEACH::BOB (Bob Juranek EKO/339-4312) Tue May 24 1988 18:20

    Has anyone received (intact) the USENET postings from .binaries
    of a Ray-Trace Demo called C-LIGHT?? The postings I got were severely
    truncated, that is cut off just below the header.

1435.1Not getting it here!LOWLIF::DAVISThat's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!Thu May 26 1988 21:335
Judging from what I keep getting and from the AMIGA_USENET conference, it
looks like all DECWRL is getting is the headers. Too bad, it looked kinda
interesting...  :-(

You may have noticed (or not) that my name was listed as having
submitted the C-Light posting. Actually, my friend Ron, the
author of the software, sent a demo disk to the moderators, but
since he doesn't have USENET access, I got my name associated
acting as go between. In any case, I have some knowledge of
C-Light and a copy of the demo which I can upload if there is
sufficient interest. It's quite large (again, you may have
noticed, requiring 18 USENET postings (gack!), which may have
something to do with why we're not getting the postings) in two
.ARC files, one with executables and one of examples, for a total
of about 375KB. I'm posting the documentation Ron supplied on
the demo disk as a followup note.

1435.6Old problem reappears?NAC::PLOUFFBeautiful downtown LittletonFri May 27 1988 13:119
    The truncation problem may be the latest appearance of what happened
    a couple of months ago. At that time, many postings were truncated,
    although not as severely as C-Light. The sources and binaries groups
    shut down for a while to fix the problem. Sigh... now it's back.

    Polite notes to DECWRL:: and to the moderators at Purdue may help
    fix the problem (hint, hint).

1435.7Ok, I'll uploadATSE::HAYESJohn HayesFri May 27 1988 14:2512
I tried posting the documentation last night, but had network
problems (PATHLOST). I have it, and could post it now, but
I talked to Ron (the author) last night and he's come up with
a new version since he sent the stuff to USENET. He's fixed
a few bugs and also added a ANIM file maker/displayer. I
believe this creates ANIM files compatible with SHOWANIM.
So, the documentation been changed somewhat. He's supposed
to be dropping off a copy of the new version tonight (delivered,
no less ;^) so I try to upload it (documentation and .ARC
files) this weekend. Watch this note for further details.

1435.8Here are the filesATSE::HAYESJohn HayesMon May 30 1988 19:4035
Sorry for the delay, I'd hoped to get these files uploaded a
little earlier this weekend so that you'd have a chance to play
with them, but I had trouble uploading until today.

The files are located at ATSE::USER4:[HAYES.C-LIGHT]. You will
find three .ARC files there as follows:

C-LIGHT.ARC		Contains C-LIGHT demo executables.
C-LIGHTS.ARC Contains example pictures and .ILBM viewer.
C-LIGHT-ANIM.ARC	Contains ANIM player and 2 example ANIM
			files.

I was mistaken about the ANIM archive in my earlier posting.
The demo version contains ONLY the ANIM player NOT the ANIM creator.
I uploaded these .ARC files with XMODEM so you'll have to CTVARC
to use KERMIT or ARC with them.

Rather than posting the documentation here, I have extracted it
from the .ARC files and included it in the directory listed
above.  The files are:

ANIM_DOC.TXT		DOC.TXT from C-LIGHT-ANIM.ARC
C-LIGHT_DOC.TXT		DOC.TXT from C-LIGHT.ARC and C-LIGHTS.ARC

I haven't attempted to post a review of C-Light due to the fact
that Ron is a friend of mine and my personal opinion is somewhat
biased. Also, I don't have any direct experience with the other
commercial ray tracing products on the market. I think he would
appreciate any comments you have, either sent to him at the address
in the documentation, mailed to me, or, if nobody has any objection,
posted as followup notes which I will extract and print out for him.

Let me know if you have any trouble with the archives.
