1407.0. "B3000...what is it?" by 45384::MASON () Mon May 09 1988 09:32

    I have just heard news of some of the products shown at the German
    Amiga show last month. One of the products on display which
    particularly caught my eye was the B3000. This machine according
    to the spec has two processors, 2 gigabytes of memory and networking
    facilities. From this sort of specification, I get the feeling
    that Amiga is moving into the mini-computer market. I would like some
    more information on this just out of curiousity and as it isnt going
    to be launched until Easter of '89 I was wondering if anybody in
    the States could help, me since Commodore are U.S based and there might
    be more info over your side.

    Thanks,

    Paul.

    It was probably 2 Mbytes of memory, not gigabytes. The Amiga rags
    say its a Model 2000 mechanically with various assundry add-ons
    like a 68030 cpu and a Unix-like operating system. Definitely not
    geared for the "home market."
1407.2They SAID Gigabytes, I promise45384::MASONMon May 09 1988 16:1812
    No, I am absolutely, 101% sure that it was gigabytes. It may have
    been a typing error but the people reporting had actually been to
    the show and seen it. Well if its not geared for the home market
    I'm not really that interested but I am a bit unsure about Commodore
    seriously attempting to break into Operating System type enviroments
    considering they have almost always concentrated on PCs. Time will
    tell how popular this machine will be, and if it popular the market
    will most definitely be professionals in Video, Animation or Art
    work. I cant see it being very successful or Business Enviroments
    for developing Software or maintaining Databases.

1407.331 bit address space?BARDIC::RAVANMon May 09 1988 16:437
    I assume from the little bit I read about it in AmigaWorld that it will
    have an address space of 2 gigs (31 bits), not that it necessarily
    comes with 2 gigs of physical memory. I assume that it will be a
    68030-based machine running Unix supporting the builtin MMU for virtual
    memory. Just one person's assumptions, however.

    .3 is probably correct. 2 gigs of physical memory, at the current
    memory prices, might price it out of the Workstation market :-)

    Of course, by Easter of 1989, the normal home computer may have
    at least a couple megs of memory (remember OS/2??)

I seem to remember an AmigaWorld article saying these machines were
"a loooong way off"...

1407.6It's Easter '8945384::MASONTue May 10 1988 13:476
    No, I am certain of it being Easter '89. Its in the May issue of
    AmigaWorld.
