1367.0. "A2010 3.5" Internal Drive" by DICKNS::MACDONALD (WA1OMM Listening 52.525) Sat Apr 23 1988 03:41

I recently purchased an A2000 and a second internal 3.5" drive (A2010).
Much to my dismay, I found that I could not connect the wide ribbon
cable to the back of the second drive. The connector on the standard
drive (Chinon FB-354) is on the far right side facing the front of the
drive. The connector on the A2010 (Chinon F-354E) is on the far left side.
The cable, just doesn't reach. I also noticed that the FB-354 drive is more
sturdily built using screws to hold the cover together. The cosmetic face
plate has a slight bevel to it allowing easy reading of the disk's edge label.
The F-354E on the other hand is held together with crimps. The case itself is
a genuine rattler, and the face plate is straight up and down without a
sloping bevel. It appears to be less sturdily constructed.

Does anyone out there know if the FB-354 is a newer, improved version? Are
there any A2010 second drives out there that are the same Chinon FB-354
model? I would like to get a hold of a second Chinon FB-354. It is sure
quieter than my old A1000 drives.

Thanks.

Paul

1367.1Why not swap?LEDS::ACCIARDISat Apr 23 1988 05:4016
    Paul, why don't you ask Moe if you can swap BOTH your internal floppies
    for NEC models? I had an NEC installed as DF1:, but the standard
    Chinon used as DF0: died as soon as I got the machine home.

    I brought the whole system back to Moe, and he installed an NEC
    as DF0:. The only catch was that we had to make a new ribbon cable
    that would comfortable attach to both drives. This took about $4.00
    worth of parts and a fewe minutes of labor.

    A friend of mine who had a Chinon as DF0: and an NEC as DF1: became
    jealous of my dual NECs and asked moe for a swap. Moe did it for
    him!

    The NECs are much quieter than the Chinons anyway.

    Ahhh .. the NEC may be quieter than a Chinon F-354E (the drive you
    had), but the Chinon FB-354 is new and improved and quieter! I'll
    do some telemarketing tomorrow on the CBM Customer Service line
    and see how one goes about ordering a Chinon FB-354. If that doesn't
    work, perhaps I'll opt for a couple NEC drive. Now, to find a source
    for the brass mounting hardware. I have a 40 Mbyte drive sitting
    in front of me, but no darn hardware.
