1305.0. "VMS ARC HELP" by TEACH::BOB (Bob Juranek EKO/339-4312) Tue Apr 05 1988 15:48

    I realize that this is probably not the right forum for this note,
    but Amigans are a resourceful lot.....

    I arc'd a bunch of large text files on our VAX using wild cards.
    Before doing this, however, I neglected to rename the files to
    something shorter then 12 characters. Needless to say, arc gave
    no warnings until I did an "ARC L <arcfile>. Attempting to de-arc
    yeilded the dreaded "Unable to create...<filename + jibberish>.

    Does anyone know of anyway to repair this folly? Perhaps some way
    to fix the arcfile headers or something ?

    Thanks

1305.1nasty, isn't itBAGELS::BRANNONDave BrannonTue Apr 05 1988 22:0612

    you need CVTARC and VMSSWEEP.

    "CVTARC V filename" will convert the ARC to something VMSSWEEP can read.
    VMSSWEEP lists the files by number & truncates the name. It lets
    you extract the files by number. You might need to use the K option,
    I think that was the one that had to do with CR/LF treatment.

    both are in BAGELS::USER1$:[BRANNON.UNPACK]

    have fun,

1305.2VAXzap will do the trickLOWLIF::DAVISThat's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!Wed Apr 06 1988 04:317
Hi Bob,
  If that doesn't work, I have a filezap utility that I call VAXzap that
will fix it for sure (I did the same thing a couple of times!). You can
edit the arc file and put a NULL byte in what should be the last character
of the filename and all will be well. Let me know if you need it.

1305.3The sweeper has done it!TEACH::BOBBob Juranek EKO/339-4312Wed Apr 06 1988 21:1311

    VMSSWEEP has done the trick. By the way, the "K" option was required.

    As for VAXzap....I may have need of something like that in the near
    future. It sounds like it has the potential to repair a couple
    of other corrupted files that I have floating about and haven't
    got to repairing yet.

    Thanks for all your help.

1305.4No BATCH?TEACH::BOBBob Juranek EKO/339-4312Wed Apr 06 1988 21:1611
    re: .3

    I forgot to mention/ask. Is there any reason why VMSSWEEP will
    not run properly in BATCH mode? I set up a job to extract the files
    and VMSSWEEP errors out on the extract portion saying something
    about "Undefined Logical Name..." I don't remember exactly.

    Just curious.
