1126.0. "Stereo Sound on the Amiga" by STOPIT::MASON () Tue Feb 02 1988 14:49

    Hi,

I have only just discovered how amazingly brilliant this comp-
uter really is,and am getting all set to buy on. My question is
quite simple, but I can not seem to find the answer anywhere.

I know that the Amiga has stereo sound capability and that this
is played through a monitor. Some monitors are stereo monitors
and some arent. My question is, if you buy a high quality mono
sound monitor, can you wire the amiga to your hifi speakers or
another set of external speakers to achieve stereo sound with-
    out using the monitor???

    				Thanks in Advance,

    				Paul.

sure...the outputs on the amiga are (at least the 1000, I assume
the same on 500 and 2k) just 2 rca phono jacks...in fact to play
it throught the monitor, you need a "Y" adapter to "short" the two
    channels together ^--hate this
                                                          word, but
                                                        couldn't think
                                                        of a better
                                                           one

The A2000 also has two RCA jacks. I feed the output to my mixer,
which puts it through a reverb machine before feeding it to my ancient
tuner and speakers. The bell from the VT200 emulator is really
    noticable!

Ditto for the A500. I have Sony self powered, shielded speakers
plugged into the RCA jacks in the back of the "keyboard."

Re: .3

Would you mind saying where you got the speakers and how much they cost?
I have been looking (not very hard) for a suitable set of speakers for over a
year now. I had heard of some Sonys, but never located a source where I could
see/hear them. I have seen Bose videomates and AR Partners(?), but both cost
more than a stereo Amiga is worth to me. I almost bought a set of Sonix
speakers (which are frequently sold for use on Amigas) until I discovered that
they are not shielded, and cause very visible distortion of the monitor when
placed next to it.

    re: whatever

why cramp your Amiga's style?... it wants monster speakers, say
4' high, 1' wide, lots of bass for the digitized explosions...
You can even use them for music :-) But I don't think that
size comes with a builtin amp, so you'll need a stereo to connect
    them to.

1126.6What about the Monitor?STOPIT::MASONThu Feb 04 1988 07:0511
    Thank you,

Your replies have given me the answer I was looking for. However
now that I know I dont need a monitor with speakers in it, will
an Amiga drive a 25 khz monitor, currently being used with my IBM
clone?? I may want to use the Amiga with this while I am getting
    the cash for the monitor.

1126.7All sorts of monitors60457::PARSONSDown-under computing...Fri Feb 05 1988 01:2113
    G'day,
    	  Let's hope that is 25Mhz not 25khz!
I've variously used Commodore 1201 orange monitor, Brand X unknown
Taiwanese 18Mhz green monitor, Commodore 1901 from the composite
b/w output, as well as the 1901 monitor with the RGB TTL output
(less shades of colour, and some V sync. probs) and also PAL (this
is Australia) UHF modulator to a 18 inch TV. They all are OK. In
fact the green mono screen is definitely easiest on the eyes for
CLI work only. (Even Laurie {Ed Acciardi's STARTER disk} looks good
    in green!)
And for sound, nothing beats 2 by 45 watts of stereo sound.
It's like the difference between old drive-in movie sound and going
to a big theatre. Regards, Guy.

The Sony speakers that I have sell for $79 at many normal everyday
mail order houses. My brother lives in NYC, he picked them up at
47th Street Photo. If you would like a model number I will bring
it in in the morning, but I believe if you search this notes file
for "Sony" you will (eventually) find them mentioned.

re: .8

Are these ONLY available mailorder? With stuff like this I like the opportunity
to touch and listen before I buy. I have not found any place that sells them
retail! I would expect to find them at Lechmere or Lectra City or someplace
like that. I would be perfectly happy if it was some sleazy place so I would
feel good about going there to listen and then go home and buy mailorder.

1126.10Sound problem?JANIS::DONAHUEFri Feb 26 1988 13:1812
I believe I may have a problem with my A500 sound chip. These are the
symptoms: The KIDtalk program talked fine at first. Now, both the
original and backup copy produce a rythmic tone, about one a second
instead of the original english speaking voice.

However, all my games, amoeba, pacman, missile, seem to have
satisfactory sound effects. So I'm baffled. How come my KIDtalk
program won't speak to me anymore? Oh, I also get about 8 vertical
lines on the screen (totalling one inch wide) that seems to take
	the place of the voice.

	Thanks, Drew

Re: .10

Did you just upgrade from a 512k system to a 1Meg system? One guess is
that Kidtalk may not work with expansion ram. (But that is a VERY unusual
problem, these days!)

Does the SAY command work on your system? Its performance might be another
data point to be used in solving the problem. However, Kidtalk doesn't
use the Amiga speech system; it has its own. I played with a demo of
it once and noticed it had a different set of idiosyncrasies than the
Amiga narrator.
