1071.0. "anybody see the Computer Show last night?" by BAGELS::BRANNON (Dave Brannon) Wed Jan 13 1988 15:35

anybody see the Computer Show last night?

Phillipe Kahn? demoed Quattro - a Lotus clone
    IBM demoed OS/2 Extended Edition

Interesting, but not terribly exciting. But the phone-in segment
was fun, the IBM rep was asked what does OS/2 offer in terms of
multitasking that the Amiga hasn't been doing for the past two years.
He said he didn't know anything about the Amiga. So a later caller
mentioned that Phillipe knows about the Amiga, and asked him to
explain the difference. He did a fairly decent job describing the
features the Amiga has that you don't get with OS/2.

The IBM rep also got hassled by someone who wanted to know what
is so wonderful about OS/2 if it doesn't let him run more than
    one of his MS-DOS applications.

Actually, OS/2 is significantly different than the Amiga EXEC.

It cost $1600.00, in addition to the hardware.

    re: Borland
I was hoping someone would call in to hassle him about that. They
usually average about two Amiga calls per phone-in segment. He
sounded like he knew what an Amiga could do in terms of video and
sound, and knew that it could multitask. My impression was that
he knew even less about OS/2. He didn't say anything about doing
products for the Amiga. But remember, this show wasn't about anything
related to the Amiga. He was only commenting on it because a caller
    had asked him to.

I'm still waiting for Max Toy to show up.

Dave, or anybody in E. Mass., do you have a tape of this show I
might borrow? It all sounds priceless... BTW, Channel 27 does not
keep tapes of the live satellite feed.

    re: .-1

Sorry, no tape. I wasn't expecting the phone-in segment to be that
good. I'm sure IBM will be back to demo OS/2 + some wizzy thing
on a future show, I'd expect the Amiga folks will hassle them
    also.
