1068.0. "Stone - BoulderDash Clone" by LOWLIF::DAVIS (That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!) Wed Jan 13 1988 02:25

Is there anyone else besides me who likes BoulderDash, but thinks BDash! is
too, *TOO* slow? Well, here is a partial answer. This one looks just like
Bdash! (some minor diffs), but is much, much faster. I assume it is in a
high level language (BDash! was True BASIC).

It can be found at MDKCSW::DUA2:[DAVIS.AMIGA]STONE.ARC. Sorry, but it's
still not as good as the C64 version. Too bad since the Amiga could do
much better - any takers??

BTW, it might even teach you some German!

Am I saying that BASIC is not a high-level language? No, I was just very
tired when I wrote .0! Maybe it's brain damage?? :-)

1068.2Keyboard use ?PUERTO::ALVAREZMiguel,from sunny Puerto RicoMon Jan 18 1988 11:025
    	Has somebody got this to work with the keyboard ? I liked
    Boulderdash but it hanged a lot and was expecting this one to
    behave better.

1068.3Joystick isn't too bad...LOWLIF::DAVISThat's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!Mon Jan 18 1988 14:366
I haven't tried the keyboard on this one, but I did think that the joystick
behaved much better than Bdash!. I know that on the third screen (I think
that is the one) you have to move diagonally at first or you die. I had a
lot of trouble doing that with Bdash!, but it is not to bad on Stone.

1068.4Some naive help...BARDIC::RAVANMon Jan 18 1988 14:508
    I've never played games of this ilk before. I DLLed STONE this weekend
    and began playing it. It's, umm, uh, sort of, uh, fun, errr, in a sort
    of, uh, strange way, hmmm, I think, uh, maybe.

    What are the rules? What's the point? Is there a score?

    Intrigued, but Confused,

1068.5It's like this (sort of)PUERTO::ALVAREZMiguel,from sunny Puerto RicoMon Jan 18 1988 18:3817
    	Re -1

    		I haven't played Stone because my joystick doesn't work
    very well with it, and hitting the keyboard at various locations
    (arrow keys, numeric keypad, etc.) won't move the "StoneMan".

    	But assuming it's a very close clone of BDash!, the object
    of the game is to collect all the green squares without letting
    the stones fall on your head. When you collect all the squares
    on a screen, you then move to a more difficult one. This game
    requires carefully thinking your next move, instead of relying
    of fast hand/eye coordination, since as you move through the
    screens, a wrong move might make it impossible to reach some
    green squares and you have to quit.

1068.6joystick too sensitive for meMVCAD3::BAEDERMon Jan 18 1988 20:5412
    I finally figured it out this weekend playing it, never having seen
    the original...but I don't think any keyboard keys (except esc ==
    die) are active...and the joystick interface (at least on my system)
    stinks! (sorry, but it is TOO Sensitive...almost impossible to
    accurately position)

    I also visited the guru a few times...but maybe due to expansion
    mem, etc...Will try more this week...definitely a good game, even
    with its flaws...any idea how many levels...I made it to 3rd..

Well I can't seem to find any way to get the arrow keys active either. I'm
using a simple, cheapo "Slik Stik" joystick and it seems to be MUCH easier
to control than Bdash! was. I made it to level four so far...

1068.8joystick problemsCIMNET::KYZIVATPaul KyzivatThu Jan 21 1988 21:1813
    I really like this game! It is not as polished as Crystal Hammer, but
    I like it better. (I guess I prefer games which allow me to determine
    my own rate of play.)

    The joysticks I have are the pits, both for this and PacMan. Can
    anyone recommend one that works well on these games?

    Also, in STONE, I have great difficulty performing diagonal moves. Are
    they only sometimes legal, or is this a problem with the joystick? I
    haven't been able to get past square one on the third level because of
    this. (But my son has - he has a better touch with the joystick.)

1068.9Diagonal HintLATNCY::MORGANBrad MorganFri Jan 22 1988 03:539
    Often when a diagonal move is required, one of the horizonal or
    vertical moves at + or - 45 degrees is blocked (i.e. moving in that
    direction has no effect). If this is the case, move the joystick
    in that direction first, then ease the joystick toward the desired
    diagonal direction.

    I prefer the BDASH! original because you could reliably move one
    square at a time. This version is so much faster that I can't bump
    my joystick without moving 2 or 3 squares.
