1041.0. "New Supra Software" by CGFSV2::DREW (Steve Drew) Wed Jan 06 1988 18:33

Those of you with Supra hard drives might be interested to know
that there is a new version of the Supra driver and manual available.

Actually the way I found this out was that about 3 weeks ago my
drive packed it in. It was totaly gonzo! It was also about 2-3 weeks
off warranty, but supra corp said they'd service it under warranty
even so (nice guys). When I called them to see if they had received
my drive, I happen to mention if they could send back with the drive
a new copy of the supra software. They did.

The version I believe, is 2.5, the manual is dated Dec-1987, its
also grown from 8 pages to 56 pages. The format utility is totaly
redun with built in support for commodores new file system structure.
You can elect any partitian you format to have either the old or
the new file system structure. It also mentions that until commodore
supplies the newfs driver to only select the old file system format.

It also comes with CLIMATE another diskman type tool.

Supramount is rewritten and nolonger uses Supra.0 file but instead
seems to interagate the hardware discovering whats out there and
how to mount it. Also has better support for multiple hard drives.

I'm almost glad my drive broke. You probably could call Supra and
ask them to send you the new manual/disk, I'd give it a try.

I just called them, told them when I got the drive and asked for
the new driver and manual. All they wanted was my name and address,
not even the serial #. He said a disk and manual would go right
out. Apparently no charge. Thanks for the tip.

Hummmph... I had to send $5.00 for the new manual and software.
I bought my Supra over 6 months ago, so I guess they felt they don't
    owe me anything...

Anyway, I thought I'd mention that CBM's new hard disk system stuff
will be out within a month. According to Supra. I sure hope it's
    true.

1041.3supra HD for 2000?CIMNET::KYZIVATPaul KyzivatMon Jan 11 1988 21:267
Is there any information on the Supra HD for the 2000? Their ads claim
true DMA support, and I saw somewhere that they are promising to
support HD boot when Commadore does. I am interested in how/if they
will support additional external drives beyond the initial internal
one, and of course prices. Is this really available now?

I agree that the service people at Supra are very nice.

My hardrive has been replaced by them 4 times. I still get problems.
Anyhow, they only charged me for the first time. I also got the
    new software.

They also sent me a fan for free at the third breakdown. I thought
that would fix my problems, but my drive went wonko even with the
    fan.

Well, a year late and I'm finally going to install
1.3 Kick/Dos software. I wanted to see about gettint the latest
driver software. I've been trying to get
the Supra folks by phone, having been placed on indefinite hold
twice, I wrote them a letter. I wasn't sure what version of software I had,
told them is was 1.x or 2.x, from 1987. The letter they sent back
was "2.x works fine, make sure your PAL chips are grounded if you
have frequent read/write errors" with supporting document/diagram.

Great. Does nothing for me. So a couple of questions for
all you supra gurus out there.

(1) How do you tell what version of the Supra software you're running?
All I can find is a file on the original disk (empty)
    labelled "Harddiskutilities-version-1.1".

(2) Do I need later versions to use FFS with AmigaDos 1.3?

(3) Is Supra version 4.3 good enough? Paul Wisner has volunteered
to loan me his 4.3 software.

(4) I have an A-1000, a 30-MEG supra with two partitions.
    *Must* I reformat the disk?

(5) If I reformat, do I use the SUPRAFORMAT function, or
    the AmigaDOS FORMAT function?

(6) Can somebody summarize the basic few steps to get
the Supra drive to use FFS, etc? Or is it going to be
painfully obvious when I see the 4.3 document that Paul presumably
received with his upgrade? I have read the "Enhancer Software"
update from Commodore, and it wasn't too useful. Looks
like I need to add 3 lines to each Supra device in the mountlist.
But even though my drive has been using two partitions for
two years, I notice mt mountlist has only ONE supra device listed.
Is this never used since MOUNT is not used for the Supra devices?

(7) Does anyone else find the SUPRA folks as AWFUL to get support
out of as I do? Misery wanting company...

Thanks for any help...
Dave
