I have a "text-to-ASCII file" device. The actual term is Optical
Character Reader (OCR). The one that I have will work on about
three or four type of standard typewriter style print. (Pica and
Elite, two point sizes each, I think). I have looked into other
more extensive OCRs and generally they become very expentsive very
quickly. There are some that can read almost any type of printed
material, but they run into the $100K range and are typically for
larger computers. The one I have I received at a kind of fire sale.
The manufacturer stopped making them. So while it read the styles
specified, it cannot read any others. It is supposedly able to
receive new fonts, but I have not been able to get that part to
work.
If there's anything else I can help you with, let me know.
