1021.0. "??? driver for LJ250 printer" by CGOU01::OAKLEY (Sps Guy II) Wed Dec 30 1987 17:00

    In an earlier note it was mentioned that the HP_Paintjet Driver
    would likely work for the LJ250 to produce color pics on the Amiga.

    I have reviewed all of my disks and haven't been able to find a
    copy of this driver. Could someone please upload a copy or point
    out a product which does include this driver? We have an LJ250
    sitting around and I would very much like to produce some color
    pictures that I have in abundance on the Amiga.

    						thanks

1021.2'no problem' - ALFCGOU01::OAKLEYSps Guy IITue Jan 12 1988 16:3717
    Thanks for the driver, it works great. I relocated the LJ250 to
    HomeSite and was able to print in color. The LJ produces a very
    high quality picture from even a lo-res picture, it sure makes one
    think about employee purchase.

    So now I will be using the CMD program to trap the output to the
    printer and then upload it to the office for printing via the VAX.
    The only thing to remember is that the Paintjet driver outputs in
    HP-PCL protocol and the LJ250 is typically configured in the DEC
    protocol mode (which if you forget to change produces quantities
    of high quality meaningless text).

The print head, ink and paper constitue a system.

For the quality of print that the LJ250 and Paintjet are designed
to produce, you should use HP Paintjet paper. See VIDEO::TERMINALS

    I'm very interested to use the LJ250 with the Amiga

    But I've got some questions:

    Is the driver programm available on one of the Fish disks ?

    Also I've seen there is another driver available on the extra disk,
    I think it's a driver for the Xerox or Canon ink jet prprinter,
    Does it work with the LJ250 ?

    I'd like to print some IFF pictures here at the office,
    Is there somewhere on the net some files I could directly print
    to see result ?

    And Last question: Is it easy to connect the 2 engines ?
    Is an RS232 all right ?

    Thank you in advance for the answers ?

    HP-PAINTJET driver is the one to use with the LJ250 or LJ252. The
    LJ250 is the serial version and the LJ252 is the parallel version.

    To get the LJ250 to work on the Amiga, plug in a serial cable, set
    the switches as follows (for 9600 baud, HP PCL protocol, 8 bit,
    XON/Xoff)

    S1 - OFF
    S2 - ON
    S3 - OFF
    S4 - OFF
    S5 - OFF
    S6 - ON
    S7 - ON

    Install the HP-PAINTJET Driver using preferences, set printer to
    serial and color in preferences, and you're ready to print.

    On the parallel model (LJ252) just plug and go.

   I can upload the driver if you can't find it.

1021.16Parallel or serial? HP Paintjet?GIAMEM::LAFLAMMEMIDInet...on the way!Thu Jun 29 1989 12:1512
	I'm gonna take an LJ25? home this weekend, and I have some questions
because I have less than 1% familiarity with my Amiga (sad, isn't it?).

	From what I understand, the ProWrite system disk has the HP Paintjet
driver (which I've seen in there). Does this driver work in both serial and
parallel? If so, wouldn't it be better to get the 2 (for parallel) because
the speed will be better? Can someone please help me out, I want to try this
printer (thinking of acquiring one) and I think I can, I just don't know.

Thanks in advance,

	It gave me line feeds, form feeds and garbage. Nice self-test,
however. If anyone has had this problem, please can you tell me what I did
wrong? From the notes in here it was my impression you just plugged it in,
but it seems this didn't work for me.

	Plus my monitor blew a tube (FLAME=ON!). I hope they weren't related.

	Again, if anyone can shed some light on why this didn't work, please

1021.20New LJ250 problems...JAYMES::BELLSat Nov 23 1991 05:1921

    Ok, let's dig up an old note. I have an unusual problem; I'd like to
    grab the ear of anyone out there who has had a 250 (the serial version)
    and hopefully has 2.04.

    I am currently entering this note via MNP5 modem, so I know my CIA chip
    is not blown. The LJ250 I have on pass, just came off of a port on a
    DECmate II and was running fine at work.

    However, when I try to print anything using the 2.04 driver
    (HP_Paintjet) the printer just sits there. I get no printer trouble
    check paper and cabling, and I'm sure that the Amiga is transmitting;
    I've hooked it to the modem during a print (of course the modem was
    quite confused) and saw my SD (send data) light go on. My LJ is set at
    8 bit/no par, 9600 Xon Xoff HP PCL. So is the Amiga.

    I don't get it.  HELP!

    Make sure the LJ is in HP mode, NOT DEC mode. The serial cable for
    the LJ is also special, I think it must be straight (pin 2 to pin 2,
    pin 3 to pin 3 and pin 7 to pin 7 {from memory so may not be
    accurate}). All I know is that a modem cable will not work but with a
    breakout box you should be able to whip up a working combination.

1021.26Figures I have to build a cableJAYMES::BELLMon Nov 25 1991 22:0013
    OH! SO YOU NEED A SPECIAL CABLE!

    Why did DEC do this, by the way, being non standard? I know I have the
    printer set properly at XON/XOFF, 9600, 8N1, etc. And it worked with
    the modem, so I figured there had to be a special problem.

    I'd like to take your word for it, but can you double check 2<->2,
    3<->3, and 7<->7?

    I'd appreciate it.

1021.27Null Modem cable requiredRIPPLE::LUKE_TETerry Luke SLO (Utah)Tue Nov 26 1991 11:327
    You don't need a special cable, you need a null modem cable with pins
    2 and 3 reversed. This is standard for all DEC serial printers, execpt
    the gender is different than most of DEC's previous printer.

    Also make sure in preferences for printer that not only is the serial
    port set at the right speed etc. but that the printer is set to use the
    serial port rather than the parallel port.
1021.28No Special CableDECEAT::PETERSONsnowball has a better chanceTue Nov 26 1991 11:505
    I don't use any special cable on my LJ250. In fact, since I don't have
    the likes of an A/B switch, I simply unplug the cable from the printer
    and into my modem without any setup/preferences changes at all. My
    impression is that your problem lies elsewhere - most likely in the
    printer preferences.

    I read the request for settings before I realized all these replies
    were here. The odd gender is Hewlett-Packard's fault. The connection
    is a null modem type connection with the single exception that the
    printer end is male rather than female. I use a male-to-male 25 pin
    flat ribbon cable that I had made up some time ago. You can use a sex
    changer to do the same thing.

    Tony
1021.31FLat ribbon cables are not null modem CX3PT2::WSC017::A_ANDERSONCSC32::A_Anderson NSU/VAX DTN 592-4170Tue Nov 26 1991 18:4034
Sorry to get picky (and for the sake of confusion) but a flat ribbon cable
is not a null modem cable.

At a minnimum a null modem will cross pins 2 & 3. If the cable
is completly flat and no wires are crossed the pin 2 goes to 2 and 3 goes
to 3. Pin 2 is transmit, while pin 3 is receive data. If you have a flat
cable the Amiga is transmitting on pin 2 and the printer is receiving on pin 2.

The term Null modem comes from the fact that you Nullify the need for a modem
which traditionally crosses the transmit and receive.

BC22D Two Female connectors Null modem cable. Good for connecting the amiga to
another Amiga or other Computer.

Such as pin 1 ---- 1 Protective GRND
            3  ---- 2  Rec to Xmit
            2  ---- 3  Xmit to rec
            6  ---- 20 DSR cto DTR
           20  ---- 6  DTR to DSR
            7  ---- 7  Signal ground

A straight through cable is good for connecting an Amiga to a Modem. Sounds
like this is what you need.

Such as BC22E sixteen pin RS232 Male - Female connectors
or BC22F 25 pin Male - Female connector.

    Ok, I'm finaly back. What I'm going to try then, is a cable with 2
    and 3 crossed. If that doesn't work, then I'll try a cable with 2 to 2
    and 3 to 3.

    What I'm saying is, I am having trouble understanding why my regular
    serial cable (that goes to my Supra Modem 2400+) is not working, based
    on the replies here.

    For example, is the cable to a modem 2 to 2 and 3 to 3? Or is it 2 and
    3 crossed? And then, I'm assuming the cable to the LJ is opposite that
    cable, because I know this thing does not work right now. But is WAS
    printing at work, and I'm sure my printer preferences are correct, and
    I'm sure that my CIA chip is fine because I'm writing this from home,
    etc.

    Could someone please tell me, exactly, what a normal serial cable is
    pinned, and then I can figure out what the other is (opposite) for my
    custom cable to the LJ? I don't mean to sound unappreciative, I really
    do thank you guys, it's just that I didn't understand the different

    I don't understand the different replies either. My LJ250 definitely
    does NOT work with a modem cable (with the pins straight through).
    Both at work connected to my DECstation 320 and at home with my Amiga

    The cable connecting printers to Amigas will have 2 and 3 crossed. The
    only difference is that for the LJ250, the cable must have a male plug.
    The one you used for your modem does not have them crossed.

    I have a really nice little book which describes DTE (Data Terminal
    Equipment) and DCE (Data Communication Equipment) devices. Briefly, a
    modem cable connects a DTE (a terminal or your Amiga) to a DCE (your
    modem). At the other end of the phone line, the same scenario occurs.
    Pins 2 and 3 are the transmission and receiving wires for the DTE.
    From the point of view of the DTE, these pins always have the same
    functions. When you remove the modems and connect two DTE's directly,
    the wires have to cross as "receive" on one end of the cable is
    "transmit" on the other. Hence, the null modem cable's function. Both
    the Amiga and the printer are considered DTE's.
