998.0. "HARD DISK DECISIONS ! ! ! !" by USFHSL::SPATOULAS () Tue Dec 22 1987 20:56

    			MY 2000 IS FINALLY IN

    				BUT
    			NO HARD DISK

    Any of you guys with 2000 Ami's have any hard disks ???
    How are the controllers. Are there any third party controllers
    yet ?? I do not know if I should get a PC-hard card or wait for
    a couple months ??

    Any suggestions ??

998.1A2090 + ST251SAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterWed Dec 23 1987 09:103
    I am using the A2090 controller and ST251 disk. I have 40 MB
    and no problems.

998.2I love having a hard disk !!CAMTWO::ARENDTWed Dec 23 1987 19:4710
    I have a 2000 and am using the A2090 controller and a miniscribe
    3-1/2 inch 20 meg drive (st506 type not scsi) and I would recommend
    that you go for the st type drive but get a larger ie 30 or 40 meg
    even if this means using your internal 5-1/4 slot. I wish I had
    because the 30 meg drive in 5-1/4 was only $40.00 more than my 3-1/2.
    Otherwise I love my hard disk, it is quite fast compared to my floppy.
    I have plenty of disk space and a very fast boot procedure.
         Considering the cost of the PC coproccesor board it would be
    cheaper to buy a real IBM pc or AT clone so I do not think I will
    ever buy one.

    It seems as if it might be nice to have a hard disk that goes in
    the 5.25" slot. Then you could put the second floppy in the 3.5"
    slot and sell the external floppy probably for at least as much as
    the new internal one would cost. Any drawbacks to this? I guess
    you have to anticipate never wanting to use the 5.25" slot with
    the bridge card.

998.5bridge can boot from external floppySAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterThu Dec 24 1987 14:005
    re: .4--The bridge card isn't a problem. I have a hard disk in
    the 5.25" slot. My bridge card came with an external 5.25" floppy
    drive. The store had to make some modifications to let the bridge
    card boot off the external drive, but the result works.

    interesting, first time i've heard of that setup. How is the external
    drive attached? ribbon cable from the board to the drive?
    Is it the Commodore 1020 5.25" drive?

998.7regular connector; standard driveSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterThu Dec 24 1987 16:3610
    The external drive is attached using a connector at the back of
    the A2000. It looks exactly like the connector from the A2090,
    though I haven't yet tried moving the drive to the 68000 side.

    The drive appears to be exactly the Amiga 5.25" external drive.

    The store said that they had just received instructions on installing
    a bridge board that could boot from an external drive, so perhaps
    I'm among the first with this configuration.
