831.20Some suggestions...ULTRA::KINDELBill Kindel @ LTN2Thu Oct 22 1987 14:0832
As someone who has done similar purchases with 5.25" diskettes,
I'd like to offer a couple of suggestions (I'm not ordering).

1. The diskettes are usually packed in bulk rather than in nice, neat
boxes of 5 or 10. The 5.25" diskettes I received were poly-packed in
units of 25. I would *strongly* suggest that people order in units of
25 or 50 so Dov isn't stuck with the thankless task of tearing apart
    the bulk packs for redistribution.

2. Unless the vendor *says* that labels, etc. are included, assume they
aren't. Particularly on cheap 5.25" diskettes, the add-on for labels
and sleeves can negate a good portion of the discount price. Labels,
in particular, can be obtained through other sources in bulk. It's
worth asking how much extra the diskette vendor wants and balking if
    it's more than a penny a label.

3. The price, including shipping, is to Dov's house, not yours. I found
that distribution of the diskettes I'd received was the single worst
hassle. I hesitated to put them into company mail, for obvious
reasons. Except for a few of the responses, it's hard to tell who
lives/works where. Please provide that information on new responses.

4. Don't fiddle with pennies. Including labels and redistribution, try to
provide a landed price per unit of 25 which is a round number. I'd
shoot at $28 ($1.12 ea), which is still a good price. If you can beat
it by the time everything's paid for, great! Dov shouldn't get hurt by
    providing this service.

5. If anyone feels moved to change their order as a result of the above,
*please* delete the old reply when a new one is inserted.

    Good luck!

    Hi

I bought Bulk Sony's before, and they come individually wrapped.
There are 100 in a case, and the case has 2 smaller boxes each holding
    50.

There is exactly one label for each disk and the labels come in
    packets of 10.

Things may have changed though... I bought them about 6 or 7 months
    ago.

Thanks to everyone for the enthusiastic response and good suggestions!

    1. Based on my experience with bulk 3.5" disks, they WILL arrive
in 25 packs. Therefore, I will only distribute them in multiples
of 25. Thanks Bill, for the suggestion.

    2. I don't know if they will include labels, but will ask. In my
experience, they do, because 3.5" are not down to the low margin
of 5.25" disks. I will find out soon. If not, we will come up with
    a source of good labels.

    3. I like the idea of a label printer. Please post that PD utility.
Or tell me what Fish disk it's on.

    4. Great idea cross posting this notice. We are well on the way
    to 2000 disks.

    5. I am willing to mail to Colorado, as long as you guys out there
are prepared to pay the shipping collectively, and split the package
up locally. Collectively, you have 200+ disks going out there, I
    think.

    6. I am willing to send a pack to Puerto Rico, but is it worth it?
You'll have to pay shipping, remember. And sorry Miguel, 25 or 50, not
    30.

    7. As to the method of paying, I would expect everyone can send
me a check made out to me. I will not cash the checks until ready
to order. This is because it may take a while before I collect all
the money. This will take time.

    9. I will send out confirmation of those who have paid, and the
amounts (probably post it) to give everyone an idea of how things
progress, and make sure no one doesn't make it through mail error.

    That's all!

I also agree with prior comments on packaging: I bought 100 sony's
a few months ago, and they came as a case containing two boxes of 50.
The boxes are not solid enough to be shipped. They also came with one
label per disk, but I don't recall how the labels were packed.

Perhaps orders should be restricted to units of 100 to a particular location, to
be broken up there. You might even be able to get the supplier to partial ship
the order to different locations in those units.

Is the $28 per 25 the amount you want prepaid?

I have voulnteered to ship floppies UPS to domestic sites that can't arrange
for pick-up in New England.

I weighed 25 floppies, and it is a bit over one pound. So, for shipping
charges outside New England:

25 floppies	2 lbs
50 floppies	3 lbs
100 floppies	6 lbs
(Extrapolate for larger orders at 3lbs per each 50.)

The UPS shipping charges from Maynard are as follows:

			2lb	3lb	6lb	12lbs
			(25)	(50)	(100)	(200)
Colorado Springs	$2.01	$2.36	$3.39	$5.46
Washington DC $1.63	$1.80	$2.30	$3.31

UPS service to Puerto Rico is a real hassle - requiring a "standard commercial
invoice" and other attached paperwork, in a special envelope attached to the
outside of the package, so that excise taxes can be levied. I would really
not like get involved in shipping there.

If your location is not listed above, send me mail and I will post rates
next Thursday.

My suggestion is that the shipping charges be included in your payment to
Dov, and I will collect shipping charges from him when I pick up floppies to
be shipped.

If you want to pool shipping charges, please do so locally and enter as one
order, and be sure you clearly indicate the shipping address!

Dov, does this sound okay to you?

Also, when should we start sending money?

Also, I would like to suggest that you establish a cut-off date for taking
orders, so we can get on with the ordering and shipping.

Does anybody have any ideas for shipping cartons?

re: .36

I would first find out how they will be packed by the vendor. If they are in
Sony cases of 100 then those are suitable for shipping as-is. Also, the vendor
may be willing to ship to multiple locations in those units. Breaking down into
lots of 25 or 50 will require additional packaging. Breaking down the labels
into lots of 25 may also be a pain.

Simplest solution would be to only ship whole cases to a location and let the
people there pool orders to whole cases.

The following text was extracted from the archive file. I printed out the
labels on both an Okimate-20 and a Star NX10. Both turned out very nice. This
is an alternative whether or not labels come with the disks. My hand-writen
labels get hard to read after awhile.

Anyone know where to get the self adhesive sheets referred to in this text?

I'll upload this arc file if someone will point to an Amiga files repository
that I could send it to. If not, I'll create a public area on my system
for pictures, clip art, whatever...

enjoy,

John

================================================================================

DPAINTLBL.ARC DISK LABEL CONSTRUCTION SET

In this archive, you'll find LABEL-TEMPLATE, an IFF Hi-res ILBM screen. It
contains 4 templates for creation of diskette labels on your printer. Brief
docs are presented on the TEMPLATE screen. You can use this to create high
quality disk labels on the labels that come with your disks, or on a sheet of
blank self-adhesive paper. Using the blank self-adhesive stock is faster and
easier, but more expensive. I would suggest using labels with removable
adhesive, like AVERY #S6496. A box of 40 sheets costs about $5.25 and will
make you 80 disk labels.

PREPAIRING YOUR GRAPHICS

The TEMPLATE file is a Hi-Res graphic that I use with Deluxe Paint. In the
upper left corner is a sample label. Along the right side are short
instructions. Make yourself a work-template by deleting all the text on the
right. (Selecting color white and using a filled box makes it easy). Save
this file as TEMPLATE in your HI-RES drawer.

Labels are split into 3 areas. On the top is the DISK NAME area. Middle
is the DISK EDGE and bottom is the LABEL TEXT area. I use the DISK NAME area
to write in the volume name of the disk. It's an easy to use reminder of the
names I give to various disks. On the DISK EDGE, I generally print 2 items.
On one side I put the application name and if it is a data disk, I'll include
what volume of data it is. (IE: SUPERBASE DATA 1). On the DISK TEXT
area you can be creative or simply indicate the major application name. Use
fancy fonts, shading your lettering or a special picture graphic or icon
you've created. You'll also find a number of disk label graphics files on
GEnie, where this originated. The disk label graphic files have lots of
icons, words in descriptive fonts that are pre-sized just for Disk Label
Construction Set.

When you add your type to the DISK NAME and DISK EDGE areas, flip it upside
down, as shown in the example template. This allows you to read a label when
it is in the drive. Simply pick up the text as a brush and use the FLIP
commands to orient it properly. If you are printing on labels that come with
your disks, remove the "protect" icon, as most have it preprinted on them.
Note the yellow strip running down the middle of the DISK EDGE area. This is
an aid in centering for you. If you use TOPAZ-8 type, simply center the text
line over the yellow area. One pixel will hang over the top and bottom of
the stripe. Magnify the example template to see this. Once you have your
labels the way you want them, be sure to save the screen to disk.

PRINTING YOUR LABELS

USING BLANK STOCK (Avery style)

This is easiest! Just stick the sheet in and print. When done, cut the
label out on the outline and apply to your disk.

USING PRE-PRINTED LABELS (that come with disks)

This method is a little harder and much more inexpensive but far more
colorful. Start by printing a blank template on good quality tractor feed
paper. Use a pen and mark a reference point on the sheet so you can feed it
back into the printer and re-align it to the same place. I just mark a
couple of little alignment lines using the paper bail as a guide. Now print
the template. Advance the paper using the Line Feed button on the printer.
Avoid turning the paper feed handle manually as this tends to make it harder
to re-align. Remove the sheet from the printer. Using cellophane tape,
reenforce the perfs so they will not easily tear (if you plan to use the
sheet again). Take your disk labels and tape them over the outlines on the
sheet. Be sure to tape both the left and right sides so the printhead won't
catch on them as it travels. Tape down as many labels as you want to print.
Tape the backing paper down rather than the labels themselves. Use care
here. If you are not accurate when taping down the labels, they won't align
correctly.

Inset the paper back into the printer, and feed it to the marks you made
for alignment. Be sure your graphic file is loaded into Deluxe print and
"let-er-rip"! If you have been careful with your alignment, it will print
exactly over the pre-printed labels. When the printer is done, remove the
labels and you are done! If you are careful, you can reuse the printed
template many times.

HINTS AND TIPS

* Set your printer thru PREFERENCES to Black & White rather than Grey Scale.
You can then adjust the Threshold so it will not print colors from the
template. By setting it to a fairly low value, you won't print the yellow
alignment guide or the 2 red section seperators. If you are printing on
stock disk labels, color the border of each label template yellow. This
allows you to see the outline for creating your label, but it won't print.

* Use a "ScreenSaver" to capture an IFF file of a title screen from your
programs. Load the IFF file into Deluxe Paint and save a graphic from the
title as a brush. When you load your template file, simply recall the brush
and paste on your disk template.

* If you plan on doing a lot of labels using pre-printed diskette labels, get
your template sheet laminated. Discount houses sell sheets of clear plastic
(very thin) that you can apply over the templates. This makes it easier to
tape down labels and remove them again.

* Reenforce the perfs using tape or laminate. It will help save your
template and make for easier alignment.

NOTE: The print sizes here are based on using Deluxe Print with an Epson
RX-80 printer, EPSON selected in Preferences and using the printer driver
"fixed" with EPSONFIX. Your output may be different, depending on your
printer.

Look for "clip-art" files on GEnie in the *StarShip* Amiga. There is a file
of pictures and text designed for labels included in this archive. As I
create more, they will be posted for you to download. If you make up any
labels that you think are something special, feel free to upload them for
everyone. If you have any comments or questions you may E-MAIL me at
GRAFIX.M on GEnie, or GRAFIX on Delphi. Enjoy!!

Mike Hooper

I have created a similar thing with DeluxePaint. It is a template
that creates labels just like the Commodore/Amiga one's, with the
big rainbow colored double check logo on white. It is a Interlace
Res IFF file, using 32 colors. If there is enough interest, I could
try to upload the file for others to use.

I use my Juki color printer to print them out, and use double stick
tape to mount them on the disks. The colors come pretty close to
    the original labels.

    OK!

I'd like to get the show on the road if possible. So let me state
the current state of affairs. In view of the size of the order,
the price will be $1.07 per disk, unless so many people drop out
that it becomes impossible. I still haven't called the place back
to find out whether labels are included, BUT i have tried dealing
with Sony direct. It looks good, and we could save substantially.
I will keep you posted. I would suggest everyone get checks to me
though, and any refund can be made when you pick up the disks. After
all, I started this mess because I needed disks....

If there are any problems yet unsolved, post them. Otherwise, start
    sending them checks!

DPaintLbl.arc is available on MVCAD::USER0:[AMIGA.ARC] (thanks Scott..)

This is the 3 1/2" diskette label templates and clipart image. Instructions
are on the images. You will need Show or ShowPrint etc. to view these.
They are hi res. You will need a "paint" program to change/modify/customize
these for your use.

enjoy..

831.55DEADLINE DEADLINE DEADLINE16BITS::KRUGERTue Nov 03 1987 17:0723
    Ok!

The checks have begun to roll in. I've already got 6 or 7. I will
wait 'til Friday, then post a list of all those whose checks I have
received so you know I got it.

I am setting a deadline in the interests of getting the disks soon.
While I can be persuaded to change it for a good reason, I do want
those disks, so.... GET THE CHECKS IN BY NOV. 17th PLEASE! That
gives you 14 days. Just in case any of you don't follow the notesfile
regularly, I will send mail to all of you as soon as I can find
time to make a list out of the names.

For those who don't like to read previous replies, the price is
curently $1.07 although I may be able to do better by going to Sony
directly. I am currently dealing with them, but they are interested
in LARGE quantities, and this would basically be a favor.

The price is therefore $53.50 per 50, $107 per 100. For those who
have sent more, you will get cash or a check back from me with those
    disks if you have overpaid.

For those who have not yet sent in your checks. I repeat, Nov. 17

831.62Including SOME shipping.CAMPER::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaThu Nov 12 1987 16:347
I am going to assume $1.05 only includes shipping to Nashua. If you wish me
to UPS your floppies to other places, you must also include the appropriate
shipping secondary shipping changes.

I have located what is, I think, an adequete number of reasonable sized
corrogated cardboard containers for secondary shipping. (Hanging around
trash containers is a profitable activity.)

831.6516BITS::KRUGERMon Nov 16 1987 15:386
You know, I didn't ask. But this is the standard Sony bulk packs,
    2 boxes with 50 each (possibly 2 shrink-wrapped 25 packs in each
one) and every time they have come with labels. But I WILL check
    this time.

831.67The order is....16BITS::KRUGERWed Dec 02 1987 15:3714
The final count is kind of hazy. I never did compute it. The vague
part comes from friends in NJ who have not yet said exactly how
many they want. However, I and a good friend are absorbing as much
of the overhead as necessary, so the order size is 2400. Having
received a call from Sony a few days ago, I now expect the order
to come in some time next week.

For all those who have NOT received confirmation from me (there
are only a couple) PLEASE send me mail. I want to be sure there
are no nasty surprises in store for anyone.

    Hang on! They're almost here!

I will be distributing early next week (probably Tuesday and
    Wednesday).

If you are in ZKO, of course, you are free to come and get'em!

I regret that I am going to NJ this weekend, so I won't be home
to give you your disks even if you wanted to pick them up.

Incidentally, there are NO labels that I can see. I am looking into
some (just buying labels in large quantity). If I can get enough
over the weekend, I will distribute them with the disks.
